There is Springsteen’s “Glory Days”...That may be as close to Billy Martin as one might get without deliberately writing about him...Though Billy was never a pitcher...

Cash was a strange person. He was religious. But addicted to drugs at times and a mess. Maybe that is not so strange after all... Its really difficult for me to believe there was a time America was bothered by the type of things Cash complained about in Men in Black or could grasp his concerns with say prisoners. Love me some Johnny Cash

Probably not a lot of Roy Clark fans on here, but he passed away today. He was a long-time part of the scenery on Hee-Haw, and one helluva musician. He was typically seen strumming a banjo or guitar.
His old standard, “Yesterday (When I Was Young) was a heartbreaker. Even more so today. He was 85.
Yesterday, when I was young There were so many songs Waiting to be sung...
RIP: I was never a real country music fan, but some music defies the divide in genres...

Just found out that Roy Clark sang “Yesterday, (When I Was Young) at Mickey Mantle’s funeral, per a request that Mantle had made in advance of his death. Mantle and Clark met on the golf course and became good friends...
Now they can laugh together as Mickey unloads bombs in BP and Roy strums in the background...

He's best known for that corny Hew Haw show but he was a talented guitarist.

I read that he was such a natural that his parents bought him his first guitar from Sears when he was 14. That same year he was playing on TV. Amazing. He quit school when he was 15 because he was booked to so many gigs.Even more amazing...

Never heard of him... I just checked out that song... awesome lyrics.. Honestly, couldn't get into the song though. Definately come kind of "crossover" style, I don't really see it as pure country.

I was reading about him and found this tidbit He considered a baseball career in his late teens but at 18 became a professional boxer. Fighting as a light-heavyweight, he won 15 fights in a row before the next fight convinced him he should look elsewhere for a living www.oldies.com/artist-biography/Roy-Clark.htmlThought that was pretty cool

Roy Clark was amazing with just about anything with strings. I was a kid when Hee Haw was on the air and still a kid when it was in syndication. Though not a country music fan growing up, I nevertheless was taken with the show’s musicianship and especially the scantily dressed Hee Haw Honeys. Having tinkered with four, six, and twelve strings since my teens, if I had half of Roy Clark’s talent, I’d still be able to make a great living playing guitar. He was that good.

For those with little experience with Clark’s music and personality, I would recommend listening to another of his tunes, “Thank God and Greyhound”. Also watch clips of him as a guest on the old Johnny Carson hosted “Tonight Show”. He was such a funny and pleasant man. My brother used to laugh just watching Clark’s facial expressions while he picked his guitar or banjo. Tongue often sticking out and looking like he was suppressing laughter. It was pure joy for him to play music...

An incredible guitar player. For something off the beaten path, check out You Tube for Roy and "Gatemouth" Brown doing a take on the old Duke Ellington big band standard, "Take the A Train." They absolutely tear it up. As does the pedal steel player and the other unnamed guitar player. If you're into guitar, it's an absolute treat. If you play guitar, it either makes you want to go practice your butt off--or just quit and go play a kazoo, or something.
