Bruce turns 75 today. I saw him in the State Theater in New Brunswick shortly before the Born to Run album came out. Probably the best concert I've ever been to. His performances were legendary in NJ prior to becoming a star. back in the late 60's and early 70's my bands worked the northern jersey and greenwood lake circuits in addition to the village. we heard a lot about this "bruce springsteen" guy who was big at the jersey shore. never heard him and kinda sloughed him off thinking he couldn't be as good as us. guess not . ah to be 18 yrs old and full of piss & vinegar.
finally saw him at msg during the no nuke concerts in 1979 as my band "career" had just finished. an incredible concert w c,s,n, jackson browne, james taylor, carly simon and others. remember poor chaka khan, who went on before springsteen, getting "bruced" off the stage by the crowd who after a long concert were ready for the boss. in the "no nukes" movie, bonnie raitt is consoling her backstage sayin too bad his name wasn't melvin.

"I knew him when his arms were as skinny as his chord changes" - Bette Midler Ha! That reminded me of an old Todd Rundgren video is watched recently. E-MA-CIATED. Good lord, and he had a Playboy Centerfold chick for a long time. I tried to watch a video of his from 2021, but his voice and even his ability to hit any notes are gone… it was awful. “Hello, it’s Not Me Anymore”. I’m in the minority here, I believe. I like that song… Todd Rundgren is one of my all-times favorites, going back to Utopia. Love just about everything he's done. I've seen him on Daryl's House and he could still crank it out. Maybe you caught him at a bad time. Here's one from Utopia that IMO has one of the all-time best refrains... "Crybaby" www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVBI29aRhNs

He's a musical genius...does a couple of different versions of "Hello, It's Me". Trivia...he produced the early "Badfinger" albums. My understanding the band didn't care for him.

The "problem" with Todd Rundgren concerts is he often performs a lot of "new" or obscure stuff...sometimes doesn't do a lot of the familiar hits. Dylan is infamous for that too, doing almost complete setlist of deep cuts and unreleased tracks.

He was a pretty good producer and I think I recall at one time owning a CD that had a bossa nova flair to it.

He did this, which is a nod to a great songwriter...Laura Nyro, who I believe he was involved with on a personal/professional level, or both. www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAoM1a7DHqA

Okay, you guys are not only right up my alley, you're practically in my house. I had a good friend back at dear old Unionville High School named Alan Miller. In 1966 he and his friend Kenny Radeloff from Lower Merion High (later to give the world Kobe Bryant) formed a sort of blues band called Woody's Truck Stop. They were popular in the Philly area, adding a guy named Tim Moore ( azbob643 and I have previously discussed our mutual admiration) on drums and then, in late 66, this oddball student from Upper Darby High named Todd Rundgren. Todd was basically second guitar and backing vocalist for Alan. He taught himself slide guitar to get some more prominence in the band. I saw these guys dozens of times in 66-67 playing Philly clubs like Trauma and The Second Fret and Grendel's Lair plus local colleges. They were very good, but Todd clearly had different aspirations -- plus he wasn't the most reliable guy. Alan was himself definitely offbeat, but he was Ward Cleaver compared to Todd. Todd did his last gig with Woody's Truck Stop in the spring of 67 since he had just put together Nazz. He wanted to go out with the band destroying their instruments like The Who, but in the end he was the only one to trash his guitar. They did have a big pie fight at the end of the show to give him his send-off. Three weeks after that, Nazz got to open for The Doors in Philly. Todd knew the promoter. Woody's actually got a recording contract before Nazz, but only did one album before going their separate ways. Nazz had that great first album in 68 with the aforementioned slow version of "Hello It's Me" and as bumper noted "Open My Eyes" which was early psychedelia. Believe it or don't, but I saw Nazz playing that stuff in the lounge of a Holiday Inn at 34th and Chestnut near the Penn campus. Nazz didn't last long either. Todd later recorded as Runt for "We Gotta Get You A Woman" and then did his solo upbeat remake of "Hello It's Me" and on to Utopia and you guys all know the story from there. I used to love the early MTV video of "Feet Don't Fail Me Now." Still cracks me up. One of my favorites by him was "I Saw The Light." Like azbob I did see him on "Daryl's House" -- what a great show -- I think Daryl has held up better than Todd, but I do agree that Todd is incredibly creative and actually very funny as well. Still worth seeing I would wager, just to say you did if for no other reason.
