Have the Yankees ever lost their own free agent player they coveted to the Mets? I suppose the Mets could drive up the cost nevertheless. Have the Yankees ever lost a player in free agency that they really wanted back? I guess we could make a case for Cano, but the Yanks were never going to give him a ten year contract. Too bad they ended up signing Ellsbury instead. The number one priority for the Yankees after the 2010 season was obtaining the rights to pitcher Cliff Lee. Meanwhile, outfielder Carl Crawford was thought to be more of a backup plan on their offseason shopping list. Still, Brian Cashman showed him the finer things in life all over the island of Manhattan. Crawford’s way of saying thanks was signing with the Red Sox for seven years and $142 million. The story doesn’t end there. A year later, Cashman claimed that the Yankees never had any real interest in Crawford. Apparently, the red carpet treatment was just a ploy to make the Sox spend more money on the outfielder. Who knows if it’s true, but the bottom line is Crawford found a home in the Commonwealth instead of the Bronx. bleacherreport.com/articles/949752-mlb-free-agent-news-10-players-who-turned-down-the-yankeesHowever to answer your question of player they wanted back Cano I would guess is closest, but they were never going ten years.

I wasn't aware Cano was so close to 3,000 hits he is at 2,624. Which is third among active players behind Pujols 3,236 and Miguel Cabrera 2,866. So possible we will have 2 more 3,000 hit club members before they retire.

Screams of collusion are being heard across the Great Plains, echoing off the Rockies and Appalachians simultaneously. They roll across the Great Lakes, hit the Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho, tumble into the Grand Canyon. They fly off onto the Gulf of Mexico and then get caught in the winds of the hurricane blowing them back into south eastern states. If you give them a few days you’ll hear them in California where everybody will say “Huh”? Col-loooooo-sionnnnn. The next strike is as good as started. The pie is going to start shrinking, but everybody is still going to reach for the biggest piece...

I had never heard about Cashman’s faux play on Crawford. Actually, my original question was if we had ever lost a coveted Yankee in free agency to the Mets.

What a break it was to not sign Crawford, though. He disintegrated fast...

What a break it was to not sign Crawford, though. He disintegrated fast... I recall railing for the Yankees not to sign Crawford and his career .337 OBP. He was never the same after leaving the Rays, but playing with big expectations (Rays certainly had low benchmarks at that time) in a major market is a skill that we’ve seen over the decades that some players just don’t have.

But returning to your query, I don’t believe the Mets have ever taken the object of our desire from us... I do not think so either. Here’s hoping LeMahieu signs a new contract with the Yankees soon. With his steady, consistent production and the MIA nature of Judge and Stanton, LeMahieu is slowly becoming the face of the Yankees, especially with a couple more years like his first two in the Bronx.

I had never heard about Cashman’s faux play on Crawford. Actually, my original question was if we had ever lost a coveted Yankee in free agency to the Mets. I know you asked about the Mets but I expanded it further to the entire league because I can't recall the Yanks ever losing one their own free agents that they wanted to keep.
