MLB rumors: Yankees expected to let Jay Bruce walk, keep Mike Tauchman
Make sense. At this point in their careers, Tauchman is more versatile. Bruce didn't show a lot in ST, but will find a team. It also appears that Tauchman has regained his power this spring which combined with his defense and speed, gives him the edge over Bruce.

It also appears that Tauchman has regained his power this spring which combined with his defense and speed, gives him the edge over Bruce. Also, Bruce is no longer in the dugout with the team, so he cannot help himself over the last four games. Therefore, competition over. Bruce had the edge early, starting hot and with Tauchman making two errors in the outfield the first week or so. Bruce actually looked okay in the outfield and serviceable at first, but he didn’t outhit Tauchman, which he needed to do. Tauchman has earned the last spot...and he will be an excellent trade piece, if needed, during the season.

I hope he keeps his chin up, he'll be back. We know it's a long season.

The Yankees made most of their roster moves today. Wade makes the team and Dietritch does not.

Congrats to Nelson, he certainly deserves it. Now the hard work really starts, he needs to prove that he belongs and stays in the majors.

Nelson has looked great. Hope he makes it. I guess I am the only person in the world who hates the concept of carrying 13 pitchers. Jeez do I miss the flexibility of having more position players. Among the many reasons I would never be allowed anywhere near a general manager slot at any level of baseball is that I wouldn't want more than 12 or even 11 pitchers. Total overkill in my opinion, which I understand is archaic but I don't get why you can't have six or seven guys in the pen who can all work effectively for at least two innings every three or four days.

I don't like 13 pitchers either but with today's workload management, there's no way around it for teams like the Yankees.

Oh, I know. I assume that nearly every team carries 13 pitchers. I think most would like to carry 17 if there was any way to make it work.
I'm not completely mired in the past, but I think the diminution of the role of the starting pitcher is a negative for baseball. Way too many anonymous arms who can throw hard for an inning for two or three years and then disappear. Perhaps more efficient, definitely less memorable for a fan. Teams will go through 25 pitchers in a season and a few years down the road we won't remember most of them.

I do think there's a balance between starters now who cant go past 5 innings and abusing the arms of pitchers like they used to do.

Billy Martin was notorious for ruining young arms with overwork. But we are definitely far to the other extreme now. Pitchers aren't allowed to build up stamina that would allow them to pitch more.

Not only is it weird for pitching, but it’s pretty much reduced the art of pinch-hitting to dust. I used to love to read of the exploits of Smokey Burgess, Gates Brown, Manny Mota, Vic Davillio, Dave Philley. I don’t think anyone can name a single pinch hitting specialist any more. There’s no room on the roster for them...

There’s no room on the roster for them... Yep. Don't forget Jerry Lynch on that list. I miss that type of player as well. Many teams carried three catchers as well, something you could do when ten pitchers was the norm; at times some teams carried as few as nine or as many as eleven. The fifteen to ten ratio had a nice balanced feel to it, and in the pre-DH days you could almost field an entire second team. With highly versatile teams like the Yankees of the Stengel and Houk era, it was almost like having 40 players.
