Rizz, your role player sounds like me when I played high school basketball. Except that I was well aware of my limitations. Role players are a necessity or there’s little chance for continuity to play team basketball. Ideally, you want three scorers on the court at all times, but that takes a talented roster; otherwise, precision is required in coaching, putting individuals in situations to take advantage of what they do well, while building skills over the course of the season. Once one of the kids was trying to convince the coach to allow him to be a shooter. After the kid headed to the showers, the coach turned to me privately and said, “That kid couldn’t score in a whorehouse with a fist full of fifties.” Your coach sounds like he was fun. Kind of Foghorn Leghorn lines. |

I could shoot a little, but I was also completely devoid of knowledge of strategy, and most of the rules escaped me. I was, if anything, at least disruptive. Kind of Foghorn Leghorn lines. He was a wonderful coach. I thought I knew basketball until I started coaching with him. He was a generous guy, too. Always providing opportunities for top flight coaching clinics with all the top college coaching names you can imagine. Over three years, I coached summer basketball camps at LSU, stayed overnight in Dale Brown’s hotel suite, and twice sat across the table at dinner from John Wooden. |

Well it sounds like you did enough collateral damage to be effective on the court, Inger.
My mother was an outstanding basketball player. First-team all-state in an era when the girls' game was much different than it is today. Back then there wasn't much in the way of opportunities in college basketball for girls, so she was limited to college intramural or club play in college.
It was embarrassing how my mother could stomp me and my friends in backyard games of horse. They laughed at her two-handed set shots until she would drill them from all over the court.
And then make us a nice lunch afterward just to show off.
