I'd be very surprised if Yanks re-signed Rizzo. Much will depend on what Rice does during Spring Training. Regardless, there still needs to be a legit backup. Cabrera can handle the job defensively, but it'd mean he'd hit from his weak side (RH). Also, like it or not, DJ will still be on the roster for another 2 years. I can see the Yankees not picking up Rizzo's 17 million dollar option, but sign him to a team friendly contract to share time/backup at 1B with Rice/Rumsfield. Rice can also get at bats as a backup Catcher if Rumfield also makes the team and Trevino is traded.
Not sure if the Yankees would start the season with Durbin/Peraza at 2B and unproven MLB players like Rice/Rumsfield at 1B. I can see a scenario where Rizzo starts the season as the Yankees 1Bman with either Rice or Rumsfield eventually becoming the starting 1Bman, similar to how Wells eventually became the starter over Trevino.
I think DJ will be traded. If not, he's an infield utility player along with OC and Berti. OF backups would be OC and Grisham.

If the Yankees are committed to keeping DJ on the roster for two nore years then playing him at 1st against LH pitching makes sense. OC plays against the RHers.

Of course, all plans depend on Soto.

Of course, all plans depend on Soto. Agreed. The Yankees should make him their very best take it or leave it offer. In my opinion, that offer would make Soto the highest paid MLB player.
If he doesn't like the Yankees offer, no need for the Yankees to waste time trying to sign him and in the process miss out on signing other free agents like Santander, Burnes, Tanner Scott.

I don't know how DJ can be traded unless Yanks pick up most of his contract, and even then it would be tough. They definitely don't need 3 UTIF.

How would Willy Adames look in a Yankee uniform ? Maybe Gleyber stays in New York...Jazz goes to center and # 99 back to RF ?

Just a thought...If the Yankees pay part of his contract maybe DJ gets traded to the Tigers? DJ is from Michigan, in my opinion he would be a good mentor/leader for a team like the Tigers.

An article I read said the Yankees would most likely pass on the 17mm 1 year but might be interested in a compromise of 2/20. I can't recall who the writer was and how informed his position was. I just think the Yankees need to start learining it's probably better to get rid of a player 1 year too soon than several years too late.

Beeter could be called up to replace Cousins, but I agree with Tom Kosensky and think it will be Cody Poteet. Outs are outs, but I would like to see Beeter's swing and miss stuff come out of the Yankees bullpen. When I commented in another thread that there might be better options at AAA, this is one of the guys I was wondering about. Considering his lack of MLB experience, the fact he's coming off of an injury and he has had some command issues in the past, it could probably be viewed as risky, unYankee-like, or a panic move if Holmes wasn't pitching so badly. I don't believe it will happen but I also don't think it's crazy.

The Yankees owe Rizzo $6 or 7 M next year if they don't keep him. The talk is Rizzo is willing to play for "just" $ 2 or $ 3 M more. He likes the Yankees and seems to be close with # 99.
