The BMI dates back to 1830, so weight and height have some relevance, but it’s clearly antiquated. Some people simply have greater bone density and muscle mass. Vasily Alekseyev, the USSR Olympic powerlifting champion, weighed 353 pounds at 6’2”, but could dunk a basketball. In short, don’t obsess over the scale. What you enjoy doing may determine what shape to shoot for (e.g., golf vs running vs weightlifting). Staying mobile or strong and feeling good/healthy are important, too. Never slow down, never grow old is a great motto. Yea I understand BMI is outdated. I just use the scale cause I can't rely on my eyes all the time to see if I'm making progress or not. I find how my clothes fit to be an accurate tool for me!

Indeed that definitely works! But I'll always go back to the scale. I'm a hard numbers kind of guy for better or worse.

There sometimes comes a point where one can plateau or even gain weight, when really it’s improved muscle mass due to being in better shape. My wife used to obsess over the numbers at times, when I wished she could relax and focus on feeling happy about being healthy. Just for fun: Do you know that picture of my wife and I in matching Hawaiian outfits? How much would you guess I weigh there?

Nice try from both of you, but I was 275 at that time. Nobody can ever guess my weight, and men’s clothing store veterans never guess my suit coat size (52L). They always assume 46 or 48, until the measuring tape comes out.

If not, you’re at a disadvantage.

Actually, somewhere between 235 and Inger’s guess would be a great weight for me. When I blew out my knee playing basketball against my players in 1996, I weighed 235. It’s tough getting there without being able to run a few miles for cardio every other day like I used to, but I’ve been seeing these sleeves that fit over your knees, which are supposed to provide stability. It’s got me interested. Even when I was playing tennis regularly when I left in California, I couldn’t get there.

I’m psychotic... 😱 A fellow that used to work me weighed like 260, but looked like 200. When in was like 215, I had people guessing that I was 180. Now I am 181, people will be guessing 160, I suppose...
