I wondered if James Hoyt might have been the son of one of the more forgotten Cy Young Award winners LaMarr Hoyt, who won it in 1983 with the White Sox. He isn't. Nor is he related to Waite Hoyt. LaMarr Hoyt's career was derailed by consistent drug problems. A forerunner of Steve Howe. I was thinking the same thing, then went from Waite Hoyt, to LaMarr Hoyt, to Hoyt Axton. Then, started thinking about songs he wrote like Joy to the World, The Pusher, No No Song, Greenback Dollar, Della and the Dealer, Never Been to Spain, and then that his mother co-wrote Heartbreak Hotel. Two steps too far, really.

Morris, Dotson, and Guidry out-pitched him. Dan Quisenberry finished in second in the voting…

Two steps too far, really. Wow, I learned something new here. I never knew that about Hoyt Axton's mother. I see she was also the sister of former Oklahoma US Senator David Boren. So a tip of the topper to James Hoyt for spurring this rivulet of knowledge. There was an old line about Waite Hoyt getting injured pitching for Brooklyn and the fans saying "Hurt's Hoyt." Guess you had to be there.

I wonder how many other CYA winners who were starters failed to win 100 games (Hoyt finished with 98, even though he led the league in victories twice.)

He had a 3.66 ERA, 115+…
