My first season on the Prodigy Boards was 1990… So that’s 31 years ago… Sarah and I bought our first computer in 1993, I think. We were hooked up for Internet access not long afterward, so I started in Yankee Forums around that same time. My username has always been some form of Rizzuto, and when I first started posting, I’d write really long, Baseball Almanac researched posts on WordPerfect, then copy and paste them onto whatever platform was there. Of course, I suffered through two hour posts that were lost before I could hit send because of glitches with the computer or the dial-up service. It only took me a few of those (slow learner) to start writing them on a word processor first. Also, after attending a MLB game, I’d write really long narratives and reviews on the game and the ballpark. One of my longest and most time-consuming posts was probably an argument on why Nolan Ryan belonged in the Hall of Fame. Does anyone recall who argued that Ryan didn’t deserve that honor? Was it JWild, maybe? Has to be Jwild.
You have balls for going up against the professor. He'd hit you up with a twelve page essay.

Dreadfully slow, too. Yes, I had forgotten the dial up aspect. One fellow at work thought I was a computer genius because he was good with computers but had not yet communicated with people from far away countries, etc.. Nope. Just found this little baseball board…

When I noted how unlucky Ryan was to have finished an ERA leading season with an 8-16 record he responded with a start by start (with dates and strength of opponent comments) critique of the season to prove that if anything, Ryan had been fortunate to win that many…😂

A lot of playing Doom, Windows 95, talking to fellow 8 graders on AOL, using programs to punt people off AOL , learning C++, playing online real time strategy games, and tying up the phone line for hours.

You have balls for going up against the professor. He'd hit you up with a twelve page essay. They were very large posts. Whomever it was, we went back and forth for awhile. These were all argument and statistics laden posts. I believe his mind was begrudgingly changed after I went through every game Ryan ever pitched to illustrate how many additional victories and occasionally fewer losses he would have had, if his teams had just scored one run, two runs, or three runs. I think it was something like 80 or 100 more wins and maybe 50 or 60 fewer losses. I also did the same for three or four other Hall of Fame pitchers, just to prove how poorly Nolan Ryan’s run support was over his entire career, and that the specific argument could not be dismissed as “Well, that could be said of every pitcher.” I don’t think I ever knew JWild was a professor until much later. He and I almost got together when the Yankees were playing in Oakland, but I had to cancel at the last minute.

You have balls for going up against the professor. He'd hit you up with a twelve page essay. He would occasionally rebuke my sense of humor and remark about how I should be “serious about my responsibility to the forums” as he was… Sometimes the arguments would light up the PMs for months. I think I held my own with him…Funny, Karl made the Mensa claims, but JWildfogel was sort of our Sheldon Cooper. Had his bathroom schedule all worked out and needed to see an organized product at all times. He regarded himself as the single most valuable poster due to his research and … and… lengthiness… A good guy, but he refused to follow me here because my description of the environment was too low brow. Those were not his words. More like, it didn’t sound like a situation he would enjoy, and in fact it sounded like just the opposite of what he would enjoy… I hope he’s still happy and doing well …

Yup, he was a professor at Stanford. Here's an article:
You can google "Jeff Wildfogel" for more.
I keep meaning to email jwild. Maybe I'll do it soon and when I do, I'll report back on how he's doing.

To be a card carrying Mensa member, one needs to score at or above the 98th percentile on an approved IQ test, such as the Stanford-Binet, which is around 130 something. Sheldon Cooper’s IQ was said to be 187, and he had an eidetic memory!

Since I was never on the payer-side, I never thought about it further. These conversations were within private messages. Every now and then, he would send me a PM to thank me for certain posts.

In fact, it supposedly got compromised. I don’t even know the password. It might shutting down pipelines and preparing to shut down the grid any day now for all I know…
