Coming into this game, Cole had a 4.04 ERA since May 17, which preceded any of the Spider Tack stuff. He may have lost some RPMs lately due to that, but his inconsistency has not been there for a month and a half now. He had a bad start against the Rangers on May 17th but had a 1.78 ERA coming into June when all the sticky stuff rumblings started. Here's the Game Logs if anyone wants to see it:
I reviewed Cole’s game logs on B-R, which is how I derived the ERA since that date. Essentially, Cole has allowed five earned runs three times in his last eight starts, and it may have been four of nine had he not been pulled for Loaisiga. Normally, Cole has at least two or more bad games, and it’s usually his mechanics. He gave up 8 earned runs and 6 earned runs in starts in 2019 and 5 and 4 in the shortened season last year. With Houston in 2017, he gave up 5 earned runs 6 times and 7 earned runs three times. The point is this isn’t unusual for him. He goes through rough patches. Didn’t he lead the AL in home runs allowed in 2019? His struggles with mechanics sometimes predates the crackdown. Does it have an influence? I have no doubt, but his mechanics don’t look right either and that started on May 17.

Green threw 2 pitches to get out of the 6th but I guess they're going to pull him for Chapman in the 7th.

Keep Green in the game and use Chapman in the second game.

Looks like Chapman coming in. He needs a bounce-back game for sure.

Chapman induces fear in me at this point. I keep seeing that dumb “I just served up a home run” smile…

Keep Green in the game and use Chapman in the second game. Or hope you don't have to.

Chapman induces fear in me at this point. I keep seeing that dumb “I just served up a home run” smile… The Yankees don't have the balls to do that.

17.47 ERA for Chapman in the last 8 appearances. Yikes!

Unbelievable. Oh Chapman. What happened to ya?

Not if you pay attention to his arm slot and mechanics. It’s much more alluring and sexy to blame it all on Spider Tack, etc., but you’d be ignoring his problems prior to that time and in previous years, and you’d have to believe Cole only began using substances for grip this season and never has trouble with mechanics like every other pitcher does during the court of the season.
