I didn’t have a basketball goal until I was about ten years old. After that, I shot until I couldn’t see due to darkness. Not until I moved to California did my name become a conversation starter. Inger and I would have gotten along well, as I hated playing the outfield, so no competition for positioning. Also, Inger would have batted lead off, which I think he would have liked. You’d have wanted me batting second or third, pitching, and playing third or first. Although, when I was in college, I played shortstop for the first time during intramurals and loved it. Didn’t Renfield pitch, too? We would have had a good 1-2 punch. Not sure where Renfield played when he wasn’t on the mound. What position would Pipps man? Is CHI and outfielder or infielder? How can we not know our own teammates? In Little League, Babe Ruth League and high school I played either third or first. Clearly not as good as Rizz, Inger, Renfield and probably others in here. But in high school I did play against two guys who later had decent major league careers, Jon Matlack of West Chester Henderson and Andre Thornton of Phoexville (which later produced Mike Piazza.) I would like to say that I hit two home runs against Matlack, who would later be ROY with the Mets, and robbed Thornton of an extra-base hit, but it would not be true. Matlack no- hit us and my closest encounter with Thornton was watching him step on the third base bag as he rounded the bases after hitting a home run. Pretty cool pipps! Matlack had a pretty good career and is in the Mets HOF I see!

Matlack was a local legend even in high school. I never had a prayer against him at the plate. But at least I can say I batted against a major league pitcher!
When we had our most recent high school reunion, I heard a guy from the team claiming that he hit two doubles against Matlack. I didn't say anything, but I was in that same game and there was nobody hitting nothing.
But as I have always said about high school reunions, we can lie about anything except our age.

An effort far too familiar the last season and a half from this club, something don't smell right. Why should they even go out and make deals? This group doesn't deserve to get reinforcements and they've shown that for !140 games now (60 in 2020, 80ish now.) Cashman should stand point, or even sell some pieces (tho Hal wouldnt approve it, they love inaction) and revamp this winter, instead of giving away farm talent in hopes a platoon veteran or two helps jumpstart the club.

Why would you sell when you are a couple games off of the wildcard ?

This is Archie Bradley. The bird’s nest actually looks groomed from what I saw a couple days ago. It is especially unsavory from profile. Poor man’s Dallas Keuchel…

I’ll take whatever your second best position was!

If only someone would take Stanton's contract.

Being a loner, I spent hours throwing a rubber ball against our neighbor’s garage door in a game I concocted. I was also a rock hitter. Sometimes with an old chewed up bat, sometimes with a stick. As a hitter, I was pure slugger. Looked for pitches to pull. Stood with my toes as close to home plate as I could get away with. My goal was to hit hard line drives, but I would also get elevation.
I lived to lead off, but was usually push down to 3, 4, 5 slots. I was never slow, but also never the speediest guy. I played more CF than anywhere else, but liked LF too because it got a lot of action. I had occasional games at 2B, SS, 3B, P. Rarely played 1B or C.
Got good jumps on the ball, came in from CF very well, went back okay too, but I played deep. I was a fence crasher, and a diver and slider coming in. Top quality throws from the OF. Strong and on the money. Wild throws in the infield. I guess I rushed them…

I’ll take whatever your second best position was! There is no question that all of you had better baseball careers than I did. I wasn't much more than a spectator with a great seat against both Matlack and Thornton. Matlack struck me out twice and I didn't have so much as a loud foul. Thornton had some good seasons with Cleveland. His young wife and child were tragically killed in an auto accident back in the 1970s. Matlack comes from a fairly prominent family of business people in these parts. Other than Herb Pennock, he was the best pitcher to come from my county, which is by no means a baseball factory. Ryan Vogelsong of the Giants was a more recent local product to make it to the majors. But there haven't been many.

Why would you sell when you are a couple games off of the wildcard ? Perhaps I'm too optimistic, give our team too much credit, or am too impatient to wait another year but I tend to agree with anthony, maize. I would wait another couple of weeks to see if we stay in contention or not before thinking about selling. If we were right around the wild card, I would even add pieces if smart trades are available for players that will help us this year and beyond.

Doesn’t matter. I’m all about the team. I may appear selfish at the plate because I’m not good at going to right, but it’s more about my limitations than my talent. By the way, with my shoulders still on the mend and that rifle arm losing it’s zip about 30 years ago… are we playing at our lifetime best? Or do I have to play the way I am now? If it’s the way I am now, I’d better bow out. I think we may be better off that Jwild didn’t stick around. He obviously believed he was the world’s greatest centerfielder… I’m not buying it… JLocastrofogel… fast, no arm… no pop in the bat…
