Maize I'm curious on your thoughts how the Red Sox could be a last place team one year and then a World Series contender the next. This is like the 3rd time they've done this at least. Yet the Yankees have more winning seasons than the Red Sox do in the last decade yet can't even make an appearance in the World Series. A few things come to mind here: 1. The ownership, Fenway Sports Group, is willing to move on from GMs and front offices even after success, see Theo, Cherington, Dombrowski. This allows a GM to make big changes, like parting ways with fan favorites Lester, Ellsbury and Betts in their prime that they preferred not to pay big. I also think being the only show in town helps them, they know unlike NYC, there isn't much else in Boston sports wise in the summer, and fenway's small confines makes for revenue to not be that big of a loss if they're a bit down. 2. They trust their internal player development and scouting, which helps ease the pain of losing players. They not only develop them properly, they stick with them through the ups and downs, which can produce last place finishes. Boagerts and Devers have had some bumps early in their careers, and now are prospering. IIRC so did Betts, JBJ and Benintendi. 3. Here's a biggie to me, they've hit on their pitching. You saw them find guys like Lackey, Eovaldi, Porcello, Price, used their farm to trade for Sale. Yankees have missed in those situations. You put some of those staffs Boston has had in 2007, 2013, 2018 with the Arod/Jeter teams, Yanks probably have a few more rings. Good points I have to say I think #3 is probably the biggest one. The Yankees finally got a proven ace here in Cole, but its def showing that without a true #2 (Kluber maybe can be that if he comes back) the team definitely can suffer. The Yankee have had some offensive success from these FA/Trade pickups such as Voit and Ursehla, but the pitching ones haven't worked out that well where it would be the level Lackey, Eovaldi etc have helped the Red Sox. Plus as you said when these players had value for the Red Sox they got rid of them to improve further even if it meant short term weakness. The Yankees keep these "retread" guys around way past their expiration date which ties up to where they can't sign other players like this year with the tax thing.

3 behind the second wild card again Simply amazing with how this group has performed. If they're still around that marker come July 30th, would imagine Cashman has the green light to add. Sounds like Loaisiga could be back mid week, then the rest back vs. TB the last week of July? If we can just hang on somehow the next week and a half... The Chad Green meltdown last Sunday in Houston takes away from the fact that the Yanks had a great road trip in Seattle and Houston. They went 4-2 and could have easily went 5-1. Obviously they need to tread water until Judge, Geo and some of the pitchers get back, plus a boost from the farm system would help.
