I totally understand that Gary Sanchez is a far superior player to Kyle Higashioka. Different planets. But there are times the Yanks seem like a better team with Higgy in there. The team IQ definitely surges upward… |

I think up grading the catcher position should be one of Cashman's biggest objectives of the off season. I've had enough of Sanchez and Higgy is just a back up. |

With slim pickins in the free agent market and Cashman's love for Sanchez, prepare for another year of Gary unless he totally implodes down the stretch. |

To further the discussion just a bit, Sanchez at .213 is not outshining Higashioka and his .170 by much. In about 1/2 the at bats Higgy has almost 1/2 Sanchez home runs (17-8). Sanchez does walk more often, so his OBP is definitely a good jump above Higgy’s. But Sanchez is painfully slow afoot and I’m sure Higgy is a much smarter base runner when he is on. They have about an equal number of PB per inning, but there is a considerable difference in WP per inning when Gary is catching, which means Higgy is blocking and saving some. Neither one is throwing out runners this year (15%. Yuck), and I think the pitching staff is a real negative in holding runners. Runners do test Higgy more because he doesn’t flash the arm strength of Sanchez. Add in the seeming desire for the pitchers to work with Higgy, and this is not the mismatch that some may think. When Gary is on one of his rare but patented hot streaks, it’s a man for boy comparison, but when Sanchez is in a funk, Higgy just never seems to drop that low… |
