There are several Red Sox that have had extensive at bats vs. Cole and have hit him well. Only a few Yankees have that distinction versus Eovaldi. It’s a sad truth. Judge has hit him well, though not with a lot of power. Stanton has a couple HR against him. Rizzo is 5 for 9 with 3 doubles against him. Small sample, yes… but three doubles in 9 AB is promising. Yep. Somebody else has to decode Eovaldi. He’s a good, but not great pitcher. He can be beaten… We knocked him around the last time he faced us. We can do it tomorrow!

No one on this team other than Judge and Stanton are hitting well against anyone. There average other than those two is about .225 I worry more about Cole pitching well. His last three starts have not been spectacular.

His last three starts have not been spectacular. So true. The extra break he had due to COVID seemed to revitalize him for a while, but he’s appeared to have become a bit fatigued at the wrong time. Perhaps he was usher too hard when he returned appearing to be so strong. That is a burden most staff aces are expected to bear. We need him sharp, because we can’t count on beating up on Eovaldi again. Perhaps since we hit him well last time and since he’s not accustomed to a high innings count, we’ll find him a bit fatigued…

It is hard to say what occurred. He may simply be tired. I am not sure how good our catchers are at calling a game. HOF Greg Maddox insisted on using one specific pitcher basically on the team for him. It matters. Also he got older. That is a basic problem with free agents. The arm wears out over time.

A quick snapshot of Eovaldi reveals a pitcher who experienced a strong start in 2021. One of the most intriguing numerical oddities he had this season was that in his first two months, over 11 starts, he allowed just ONE HR. By comparison he has allowed 8 in his past 11 starts and 14 in his last 21 starts. The home runs have come with decidedly more frequency as the season has rolled along, suggesting that he may be susceptible to the Yankees strategy. It’s a bit odd that he’s allowed far fewer doubles as the HR have increased this season, which may be incidental. He’s much better at Fenway than at home, and perhaps related to his home park right handers hit him more regularly and with more power than left handed batters. Why do I expect Boone to go out of his way to employ left handed bats?
In his 9 losses, Eovaldi has suffered an ERA over 8.00, so when he’s off he’s very off. In his no decisions he has pitched to a 2.94 ERA and predictably he’s been under 2.00 in his 11 wins.
On thing he does not typically do is walk very many hitters. Aggression is not a bad game plan against him, though not to the point of letting him expand the strike zone. He’s good at that when ahead in the count.
He is susceptible to the stolen base, with runners succeeding on all 10 attempts against him this season. We should look for opportunities to steal…

That is a problem for us since we rely on walks. Well we used to anyhow

That is a problem for us since we rely on walks. Well we used to anyhow If he’s not pitching well, one would assume he lacks command on that day. We can’t ignore the possibility of walking, he has allowed 1.7 per nine innings. That it is the leading rate among qualified starters in the AL. He does tend to run high pitch counts and gets removed before completing 6 innings pretty often. A lot of deep counts, which does play into the hands of Yankee batters…

This is where missing DJLM could hurt. He is 12-37 lifetime against him for a .324 BA. Oddly no walks. Only one HR, three RBIs. .

That’s impressive. When you think about it, Severino has only allowed two earned runs in the past three years.😎

In 4 starts against the Red Sox this year, Gerrit Cole gave up 12 earned runs. 8 of those 12 runs were driven in via home runs by Rafael Devers. Do not let this guy beat us!
