Scoting report on Cole Irvin from Reddit:
We got ourselves a midweek afternoon game to close out the series against the A's. The yanks will face lefty Cole Irvin today. He has a 3.29 ERA on the Season. Some nuggets about him: He will throw a lot of Fast balls: 4sm Fastballs and Sinkers add up to about 55 % of his pitches. And he will use them against both lefties and righties. Just as Montas and Blackburn, Irvin also has a lot of pitches in his arsenal. He throws a Change, Curve and Slider in addition to the mentioned Fastball and sinker. These arent really great Pitches. The Curveball and Slider really dont move much, in fact they are both in the bottom 20% in the league regarding movement.
Thats why he doesnt use his slider all that much .He will throw a lot of Curveballs against lefties and will also sprinkle it in against righties tho. But he doesnt really trust the Curveball. He only throws the curve on pitcher favored counts (outside of 3-1 to lefties somehow) friendly counts where the batter is at least 2 pitches away from doing anything. As a lefty that pitch might look similiar to the slider if it doesnt have much movement and thats why he throws it in favorable counts, to get people to swing and miss to strike out.
Irvin has a low Walk percentage and low Strikeout percentage, meaning he allows a lot of Balls in Play. This is also where it really gets interisting for the yanks. Because Irvin, according to baseball savant, has had either extremely great defense behind him or got very lucky: his ERA, as mentioned,
sits at 3.29. His expected ERA is at 5.29 however. So the yanks might wanna bring these numbers closer together today.
Looking at his gamelogs is amazing: All of his outings have been between 5.0 and 6.1 IP. And he also has allowed a run in all but one game, which was in April. Also worth mentioning is that he hasnt allowed more than 4 earned runs in any outing this year.
Last night it felt like a "who takes longer" battle between the starting pitchers when getting ready to pitch. Irvin will be no part of that. He ranks as the 11th in "fast" Pitching. In Comparison: the fastest Yankee is Nestor Cortes, who ranks 27th. He will take his sweet time with runners on tho. But he is still faster than league average in that situation.

I'm going to run to the gym, I'll be back in the middle innings. You should really drive. If you run, you’ll be too worn out to do your work out. Then you’ll have to walk home and you’ll miss the whole game. Consider this wisdom from the aged…

Taillon and the starting pitching faltering recently is a bit concerning.
