Scouting report on Quintata from Reddit:
To start a 2 game set against the pirates, the yanks will face Journeyman Jose Quintana. And while the pirates maybe bad right now, Quintana is certainly not.
Some nuggets about him:
Quintana, a lefty, faces mainly righties. Why is that? His Curveball against lefties is absolutely amazing. The stats support it as well. His allowed Ops against lefties is 150 points lower than righties. Against lefties he throws that curve 43 % and 35% sinker(more on that later) and throws in some Changeups and 4sm Fastballs. Against righties, which is the bulk of hitters he faces, he throws 40 % of the true 4sm fastball, and 30 % of the change. The curve only gets used 23 % against righties, only half of the lefties use. Sinker sits at 10 %. I think its fair to say that he drasticly changes the approach to more of a guessing game with the Fastball, Changeup and Sinker taking almost 80 %, since they all have a similiar path to the plate but one will go straight one will move down and one will move away from the hitter. I guess its also easier to sit on it.
I mentioned the heavy usagae of the sinker against lefties, which to me is odd as quintana is a lefty himself. And as we know: a lefty sinker will move in on lefty hitters. So usually you throw that sinker a lot against opposite side hitters and combine it with a slider (Holmes, King). Quintana however doesnt throw a slider at all. Instead he throws a nasty curveball. But its also worth mentioning that his sinker only sits at 92 mph and doesnt move a lot anyway.
Comparing his pitches to the league, one thing shows: His Curve and 4sm Fastball are well above league average and rank amongst the top pitches in the league (both top 110 pitches, out of 1855) On the other side, his sinker and especially his Changeup is well below league average. The Change is actually ranked as 54th worst pitch in mlb right now. Now why that is i can only guess. And i would say because the Velocity is only slightly under the velocity from the 4sm fastball and hitters probably turn on the change a lot more. But dont take my word for it.
Recently he had two good outings after a tough stretch from mid may to mid june. So we will have to see where he is at right now.
His expected ERA is almost a full point higher than his actual ERA, 3.43 - 4.37.
Thats it for today. Lets hope the weather gods let us get this game in!

Rizzo late scratch with lower back stiffness. Carpenter takes his place. Ugh, we don't need injuries, especially back injuries to first basemen.

Yeah, we get Beltran in the booth. The booth is a place where the announcers call the game (Beltran voice)

Bonzo's drums just blow you away. Had to look him up. RIP. Gone too early. Rolling Stone rated him as the greatest rock drummer ever. He sure died in a classic rock manner, consuming 40 shots of vodka the day of his death.
