Bill Mazeroski on the Pirates broadcast. He looks good for 86 years old. "Yardbirds guitarist Jimmy Page, managed by Peter Grant, became interested in Reid's work, and when The Yardbirds disbanded, Page wanted Reid to fill the vocalist spot for his proposed new group, the New Yardbirds, which was to become Led Zeppelin.[2] Reid had already committed to go on the road for two tours with The Rolling Stones and another with Cream (as an opening act on the 1968 US Tour). Reid suggested to Page that if he were compensated for the gig fees he would lose and if Page would call Keith Richards to explain why Reid had to pull out of the US tours, Reid would try some things out with Page. It never happened and Reid told Page to consider a young Birmingham-based singer, Robert Plant, instead, having previously seen Plant's Band of Joy as a support act at one of his concerts. Reid also suggested Page check out their drummer John Bonham. Reid also rejected an offer from Ritchie Blackmore to replace the departing Rod Evans in Deep Purple.[4]" Wikipedia

I thought Plant was his first choice. I know Plant introduced him to Bonham. "You are wrong, Camel-Breath!" I miss Johnny Carson. Wish I could do that great Ed McMahon guffaw.

Does anyone know who Jimmy Page's first choice was to be the lead singer of The New Yardbirds, the group that would become Led Zeppelin? I thought Plant was his first choice. I know Plant introduced him to Bonham. Plant & Bonham were in a band together when they were teenagers. Band of Joy I think the group was called.

True.
Pretty cool that his son played in his place with the band in 2007 I just read.
"The most successful of these was the 2007 Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert in London, with Bonham's son Jason Bonham on drums."
That 2007 show is the only full blown concert Zeppelin ever did since the the death of Bonham and they only did that one because they were so close to Ertegun, who was the founder of Atlantic Records, Zep's label. They took it seriously and practiced for a long time to prepare and it shows, since the concert was a big success. The show was officially released on the "Celebration Day" two disc, one DVD set, although Jimmy Page edited out most of Plant's banter in between songs on the CD's. The bootlegs give you a more complete experience of what the show was really like. Cool stuff, Chi

Glad he's still going strong. Don't know if they'll interview him on the Yankees broadcast. He said that lots of Yankee fans come up to him to tell him they've finally forgiven him and that he appreciates the gesture. He's not a bad guy really.

A lot of the great rock drummers are gone: Bonzo, Keith Moon, Neil Peart, Charlie Watts and Ginger Baker. Don't forget the great Wrecking Crew drummer Hal Blaine who died a few years ago. He played on about half the rock records released in the 60s and 70s and was an influence on Bonham. I also left out Jim Capaldi, the late great drummer of Traffic. Traffic was one of the must underrated bands of the classic rock era.

lol, at least my Zeppelin stuff. I've spent a lot of time listening to that band. Not as much time as listening to Neil Young.
You gave me an experts rundown of his entire catalogue when I asked, I remember.

I played "Paper Sun" to death back in the day.
