It is the second straight season! I always liked Ted Lilly, who went to Fresno City College, not far away from Fresno State University, Aaron Judge's alma mater. I thought he was a bulldog, but he also never benefited from run support or great defense when needed. Do you remember or rather know of Ted Lyons? Louisiana boy with a long Hall of Fame career, missing three years to WWII after like 20 years of MLB. Jimmy Dykes was a Philly boy who had a long career as a player and manager. As a gruff old man in the 1960s he had a sports talk show on WCAU in Philly. He managed Ted Lyons in the 1930s and 1940s. He spoke lovingly about Lyons all the time. Lyons pitched on mostly bad White Sox teams in his long career and still won 260 games. Jimmy Dykes often said Lyons would have won well over 300 games with better teams. I know he was much loved in Chicago. I used to call Jimmy Dykes' show as a kid. His voice made him sound like he would bite your head off, but he was a kind and patient man who indulged the many young kids who phoned him. The degrees of separation is always fascinating to me! My friend Joe often talked about Ted Lyons, who was unknown to me before those conversations. You used to call in to sports' talk shows, too? I once got to speak with Michael Kay on a radio show many, many years ago. He dismissed my comments outright (probably because I was calling from California), only to mention my very points on a broadcast a couple days later. He seems to have mellowed since then. Do you remember when he first was in the television booth, he used to lambast the Yankees' players on the field and the organization? Of course, this was the early 1990s, before Derek Jeter.

Abreu does an excellent job. Peralta struggles but holds. Loaisiga in the seventh.

Loaisiga looking more like his old self. Getting him back along with Clarke Schmidt and Marinaccio has been huge to this bullpen. The bullpen was in real trouble when we lost Loaisiga, Chad Green, Chapman, and then the big blow with King. I had hoped the Yankees might be able to land "The Sheriff" - Andrew Chafin from the Tigers. If Loaisiga and Chapman get back to themselves, with Abreu, Clarke, Luetge, Peralta, Marinaccio, and Holmes, we might be okay.

With no one on base, Hicks gets on base again to start the seventh!

We cannot afford two Gallo-like offensive holes. Luckily, both provide excellent defense, unlike a Chris Davis.

Kay stealing your stuff? Well I never..... Seriously, I agree that he's mellowed a bit, although he doesn't hesitate to criticize the team when it's deserved. Which I hold in his favor. When he started out on radio with Sterling I found him a welcome counterpoint. In general I think he's a very good broadcaster, although he clearly rubs some people the wrong way. I think he interacts well with his colleagues and makes them better. It's been a long time since I called a sports show. The last time I remember doing it was in the early 1970s when I used to call Guy Mainella on WBZ in Boston mainly to talk Celtics basketball and Bruins hockey. But as a kid I was always calling radio talk shows and disc jockeys. As a teenager I used to actually visit local stations to watch them at work. Mostly they were fine with it if you had a sincere interest. I have always loved radio and felt at home with people in the industry. Right now is a very dark age for the business, although there are plenty of people making money off of it.

How did Mike Matheny go from winning World Series with the Cardinals to this garbage team?
