I never thought Houston would let this guy go. I'm surprised at that too Chi. Houston seems to routinely have big name guys leave via free agency -- Springer, Correa, Cole, Verlander -- but they always stay in the mix.

Good for him. A whipping boy for some...played whatever roll he was asked to with Yanks...never complained.

Good for IKF. He was a great teammate who truly loved being a Yankee, it's nice to see him get paid.

I was a critic of IKF as a SS but he did good work as a utility guy. If the Yankees did not have DJ signed, he might be an option at 3rd for 2024. But given the Yankee roster, a fresh start in another city is the best thing for him.

Very Very happy to see the Yankees move on from IKF ... He was part of the problem not the solution.

I still think pivoting to Bellinger with that money earmarked for Yoshi might be the best course of action. Judge/Rizzo/Stanton/Dominguez all have availability concerns for me. Rizzo/Soto/Verdugo are all free agents after the year. Torres isn't directly impacted by Bellinger but that's another potential loss next offseason who's a big part of the offense. I don't see anyone in our system beating the door down for the future first base job. Bellinger adds another good bat with defensive versatility to where you've got a lot of bases covered. There's a lot of potential flux in the lineup over these next few seasons and Bellinger's flexibility gives you some freedom to pivot to different combos.

After the '21 season Cashman admitted that the Yankees needed a new SS. IKF wasn't the guy fans dreamed of adding and he took a lot of abuse from the disappointed. www.si.com/mlb/yankees/news/brian-cashman-address-shortstop-offseason-after-gleyber-torres-mistake

If we could get Bellinger at a reasonable cost I would be happy to have him. But anything I am hearing suggests that with Boras as his agent, anything in the $200 million range is considered low-balling. Hard to see Hal going there. His ceiling is pretty high, I agree, and he's a great glove guy, but his floor is so low that signing him up to play into his mid to late 30s sounds like a high potential for disaster. Having said that, I fall back on the old "it's not my money" philosophy. Sure, I'd be curious to see what that swing could produce at Yankee Stadium. But the Yanks already have Judge, Soto, Verdugo and Gresham before Jasson comes back. Obviously they could trade Verdugo or Gresham, so who knows? I know he can play first, but it's hard to see them benching or getting rid of Rizzo. The "experts" keep touting the Cubs as the likely landing place, although they are the same "experts" who had Yamamoto going to the Yankees.

Bellinger would complete a murderers row as the cleanup hitter we need. In ‘21 he tried to play through injury which put him into bad habits that affected ‘22. I think the “real player” reappeared in ‘23. I think we saw that with DJLM in ‘22 and the first 2/3 of ‘23. I believe we’re getting the “real DJ”, albeit an older one back for ‘24. 290/20 is within reach… If we don’t get Bellinger I wish he’d hit 4th instead of Gleyber…
