The Yankees have a deal to acquire left-handed reliever Caleb Ferguson in a trade with the Dodgers, a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand on Monday. MLB Network insider Joel Sherman reported New York is sending two prospects to Los Angeles in exchange. The teams have not confirmed the trade. Ferguson, 27, posted a 3.43 ERA with 70 strikeouts and a 1.44 WHIP in 60 1/3 innings for Los Angeles last year. He made seven starts among his 68 appearances, all as a one-inning opener. He's also posted a 3.43 ERA over his five-year career, all with the Dodgers... Better this than trading Peraza to Florida for a reliever. The Dodgers must need 40 man roster space.

Yeah its much better than trading peraza for a reliever who had a career year after 3 or 4 mediocre ones

Looks like Matt Krook is staying with us after all: The Yankees bolstered their bullpen on Monday, acquiring left-handed reliever Caleb Ferguson in a trade with the Dodgers in exchange for lefty Matt Gage and Minor League right-hander Christian Zazueta... Gage is the non-descript nearly 31-year-old left-handed reliever they picked up on waivers from the Astros last week. Zazueta is not a strong enough prospect to be rated at least 35+ on Longerhagen's top 36 Yankees' prospects list at Fangraphs, but he is in one of the group sections below the main list.
In the "Middle Reliever" section, it says this about the 19-year-old righty reliever, which pitched for the Yankees' in the Dominican Summer League in both 2022 and 2023:
"Zazueta led the DSL Yankees in innings pitched with 52. He has the pitch movement foundation to break out if he can throw harder as he matures. He currently has a rise-and-run upper-80s fastball, a shapely mid-70s curveball, and a precocious changeup, all of which have bat-missing promise."
Skinny righties that don't top 90 don't usually develop into significant major leaguers, unless they have a trick pitch, even if they are just 19. But the Dodgers are good at developing pitchers, so we'll see. Basically the Yanks gave up Zazueta's potential to upgrade from Gage to Ferguson. The Dodgers have re-signed Brasier to a 2 year deal today, and get Treinen back from extended injury time and have added ex-Yankee J.P. Feyereisen to their pen this year as well, so they could afford to trade Ferguson in his walk year for a minor league prospect that doesn't have to be put on their 40-man roster for at least 2 years (I think), as well as a workable backup lefty to cover for injuries in their bullpen. Seems reasonable to me, from what little information I have gathered.
And they won't have to spend $5-7 million for a solid lefty reliever now. Ferguson, as mentioned above, because on January 11th, the Dodgers signed him to a $2.4 million contract for this season to avoid arbitration. Somehow, in spite of the fact that he's been in the majors just 2019, 2022, and 2023, he's managed to accumulate over 5 years of service time (probably major major league IL time is responsible for the difference). He's entering his free agent walk season, so maybe that will encourage him to have a very good year for a big payday.
A moderate impact trade and a solid one, I think.

I doubt I'd be to thrilled right now if I was a Brewer fan. WOW! Schmidt + Peraza proabably would have gotten this done if that package did

Yeah, I'm not sure about that Peraza for Scott trade. In my opinion, Scott would have given the Yankees the power Closer I think their Pen needs, but he's another player that's in his walk year.

YANKEESYankees showing interest in veteran speedster for more depthUpdated: Feb. 05, 2024, 6:11 a.m.|Published: Feb. 05, 2024, 6:00 a.m. By Max Goodman | NJ Advance Media for NJ.comTony Kemp The Yankees are reportedly showing interest in free agent Tony Kemp.APWith all eyes on the Yankees’ high-profile acquisitions in the outfield and the concerns hanging over their starting rotation, the club’s bench has flown under the radar. If the season started today, here’s who would be on the pine:
Center fielder Trent Grisham, infielder Oswald Peraza, utilityman Oswaldo Cabrera and either Jose Trevino or Austin Wells, whoever isn’t starting behind the plate.
Not too bad, right? It’s certainly an improvement from last season.
The Yankees are poised to have one of the better catching duos in baseball if Wells takes a step forward this year. They missed Trevino badly after he had wrist surgery last summer. Grisham can play a significant role with his elite defense and speed. The youngsters are still looking to prove themselves at this level, but they’re valuable thanks to defensive versatility.
From there, it’s unclear where the Yankees would turn for depth. Outfielder Everson Pereira is on the 40-man roster, but he struggled mightily in his 1st taste of MLB action last fall. Second baseman Jorbit Vivas was acquired from the Dodgers this winter, but he’ll likely need more seasoning in Triple-A having only played in 26 games at that level with Los Angeles. Speedster Greg Allen signed a minor-league deal with the team a week ago, one of several non-roster invitees eager to compete for a spot this spring.
To add another proven big leaguer to that mix would be a plus. That’s where Tony Kemp could come into the picture.
The Yankees have shown interest in signing Kemp in free agency, per Robert Murray of FanSided. Murray reports that the Blue Jays, Red Sox, Reds and Pirates are also interested in Kemp.
Kemp, 32, will enter his 9th big-league season in 2024. He’s a .238 hitter in his career, coming off a season where he slashed just .209/.303/.304 with Oakland. While the left-handed hitter is far from a slugger, Kemp can play multiple positions, he’s quick (he stole a career-high 15 bases in 2023), he’s durable and the veteran carries a strong reputation.
Bringing someone like Kemp to camp would promote a healthy competition for the final spot or two on the bench, potentially bringing the best out of Cabrera, who sunk into a sophomore slump this past season, failing to capture the starting job in left field when given the opportunity. If those offensive woes persist for Cabrera, Kemp can step in. Injuries are almost always a factor as well, so more insurance wouldn’t hurt.
With their passive approach in the reliever market in recent weeks, the Yankees have proven that they’re on a budget at this stage of the offseason. A payroll north of $300 million means the Yankees will need to endure a slew of luxury tax penalties in 2024. Time will tell what Kemp costs. He made just under $4 million last season, his final year of arbitration.

From MLB Rumors
Phillies Claim Diego Castillo From Yankees By Darragh McDonald | February 5, 2024 at 3:50pm CDT
The Phillies have claimed infielder/outfielder Diego Castillo off waivers from the Yankees, per announcements from both clubs. The Yanks designated him for assignment a week ago. The Phils now have a full 40-man roster after this move.
Castillo, 26, spent 2023 with the Diamondbacks but has been on the roster carousel so far this year. Since the calendar flipped to 2024, he’s been claimed by the Mets, Yankees and now Phillies. That’s likely a reflection of the fact that he has some intriguing characteristics, enough to get claimed, but not enough to hold a roster spot.
He generally does a pretty good job of getting on base, but without much power. He also has a bit of speed, some defensive versatility and one option year remaining. With the Snakes in 2023, he only got into one major league game but took 556 plate appearances at the Triple-A level. He drew a walk in 17.4% of those and was only punched out at a 14.2% clip. He only hit three home runs in that time but his .313/.431/.410 batting line still amounted to a wRC+ of 117, even in the hitter-friendly environs of the Pacific Coast League.
He also stole 13 bases and bounced around the diamond, lining up at the three infield positions to the left of first base as well as left field. In past seasons, he’s played a bit of first base and right field, in addition to some brief mop-up duty on the mound.
For the Phils, Castillo can provide them with some depth all over the diamond, alongside other multi-positional guys like Kody Clemens, Rodolfo Castro and Weston Wilson. The major league bench projects to feature Garrett Stubbs as a backup catcher with players like Edmundo Sosa, Cristian Pache and Jake Cave filling out the final few spots. Those final three names are all out of options, which could give them a leg up in earning a roster spot to start the year.
But injuries will inevitably pop up throughout the season and perhaps open opportunities for Castillo or some of the club’s other depth players. But also, given the way this year is going for Castillo, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him back on the waiver wire shortly.

Probably not until june or maybe july if he isnt as far along as they hoped . Some people take longer to recover from tjs and can a full season before regaining arm strength
