Joel Sherman piece: "...Wells’ workout diligence with, among other things, weighted balls has increased his throw velocity to 80.6 mph last year (MLB average is 79.4). The Yanks and Wells think he might still have more in the arm. Both his exchange (glove to hand) and pop time to second were above MLB average, according to both the Yankees’ internal data and the publicly available metrics on Baseball Savant." "And, last week in Padres camp, Kyle Higashioka and Michael King no longer were Yankees, but were still praising Wells’ defense." "Yankees catching coordinator Tanner Swanson described Wells as “having a chip on his shoulder” and being motivated because he hears the criticism." “Reputation precedes the truth,” Swanson said. “But I’ve had confidence because he was putting up good numbers defensively [in the minors] every step of the way. So I had no reason to believe it wouldn’t play at this level. So his short stint with us late last year might have opened up a lot of external eyes, but internally we’ve had confidence that he would do exactly what he did and more.” nypost.com/2024/02/16/sports/austin-wells-defense-needs-to-justify-spot-in-yankees-lineup/

From a podcast with Joel Sherman, I Said Heyman, and David Cone...
Joel Sherman after meeting Yamamoto: "I'm five foot ten. Now, if Yamamoto is five foot ten, then I'm in the NBA."

Bat first, poor defense, unlikely to stick at catcher. As they progressed we heard that Gary didn’t like to do defensive drills. We heard the opposite on Wells. Hopefully, we’ll see the results of Wells energetic approach…

I mean how did not anyone see the red flags come up when he was disciplined and had to miss a game or two while still in the minors?

Not sure what the discussion is about but if it's Matt Blake I have not been impressed at all by him and think he should be gone. We all know what Cole was when we signed him. Most trades and FAs flopped. Our prospects failed to break into the rotation. Rodon blew him off at the end of the year. Monty was a #5 with no run support. That is exactly what i have been saying . I too havent been impressed with him either . In fact Blake has done very little with the starting rotation and while he has had some success with bullpen its been limited as we have seen with the inconsistency of guys like peralta and holmes . And yet i still see fans say “ lets see what blake can do with this guy “ . www.pinstripealley.com/2023/1/15/23554683/yankees-analysis-slider-matt-blake-pitching-sinker-spin-babip-popups

Merrifield’s best years are behind him, but he’s always been a good bat…

So they use one pitch more than others . But the overall results , especially the starting pitchers show they havent bern much better at all. I mean german was still the 4 era pitcher he was before blake showed up . Blake couldnt fix sevy last season , tailon was an inconsistent pitcher under him , monty still had a bit more success after he left . I never said blake wasnt good but he isnt the miracle worker that some say he is either .

There is a graph that shows how under Blake, the staff composite ERA, FIP and BABIP have all improved dramatically and are near MLB League Leaders.
