Which of these players would you rather have (statistics from 2022-2023)? Player A: 5 OAA, 112 OPS+, 27.9% K%, 10.8% BB%, .195 ISO Player B: 7 OAA, 103 OPS+, 17.8% K%, 11.5% BB%, .132 ISO So, which one do you want? If we take for granted that Player B is a better defender at third, we can forgive the slight drop-off in total offense, particularly in combination with better plate discipline, right? Maybe Player A is a bit more valuable, but not by much, right? We also know the Yankees need plate discipline, so Player B might even be a better fit when you combine better plate discipline and infield defense. Player A is Matt Chapman; Player B is DJ LeMahieu. If you were wondering why Chapman hasn't scored a good free-agent deal yet, now you know. This also highlights an important point: I think we've started undervaluing DJ LeMahieu. If he's actually getting healthy, and we can expect him to play good defense at 3B and make contact in front of the boppers, the Yankees are in good shape at 3B, particularly since they at least have a good defender backing him up in Oswald Peraza. This comparison also tells us something very interesting about this year's free agent market: there's a reason it's stagnant. Chapman is certainly the fourth-best free agent remaining. Would you pay a ton of money and commit 4-6https://www.startspreadingthenews.blog/post/mid-january-thoughts years to Matt Chapman? Me neither. At 36 is it a really good idea to start dj at 3b everyday ? Thats a very physically demanding position . More demanding than 2nd . Its a known fact that as an infielder ages they move to the right side of the field not the left .

It never ends with Boras. Next season he has Soto, Burnes and Alonso among others.
If the Yankees are still having contract talks with Snell, they seem to be moving at a snell's pace. 🐌…

Its a known fact that as an infielder ages they move to the right side of the field not the left . I’m good with DJ at third provided he’s healthy. There were signs of him getting back to “normal” minus some aging in the second half last season. After the All-Star break he hit .273 .377 .432 .809. Not world beating, but steady. With Peraza perhaps around to pinch run and play some late inning defense as well as to spell him 20 games over the course of the season he can be a steady veteran presence, and at 7 OAAlast year I don’t think he’ll diss spear on us in 2024…

I wouldn't trade him for one year of Burnes (he's a FA after this year). Maybe if Burnes signed an extension.
The Yankees would certainly be a tough postseason match up with Cole and Burnes starting games 1 and 2. The Yankees have to give to get. In my opinion, any player for the right price can be traded. I mean after all, Ruth changed teams, so did Frank Robinson, and other Hall of Fame players. But with that said, I'm not a fan of when Yankees trade for players in their walk years.
The Reds had traded away OF Frank Robinson to the Orioles because he was a "too-old" 30 years old player. Well, I guess that didn't work out for them. Clipper

Yankees can’t be done, making them a fit for pricey reliever, ex-GM says Updated: Jan. 16, 2024, 2:59 p.m.|Published: Jan. 16, 2024, 12:31 p.m.

Will the Yankees go after Josh Hader?
The left-hander is the top available reliever and has been linked to New York since he hit the open market. And in naming potential fits for remaining free agents, Jim Bowden of The Athletic said the Yankees are Hader’s best match.
The Yankees pivoted from their pursuit of Blake Snell and instead signed Marcus Stroman to a 2-year, $37 million deal, which Bowden says should leave payroll space to sign Hader: “a signing that would allow them to use Clay Holmes in a set-up role, where he’s better suited,” Bowden wrote.
Bowden also named the Rangers and Phillies as “realistic” landing spots for the 29-year-old. He wrote that for both the Yankees and Rangers, a Hader pursuit would depend on if they were to land another starter if not, both clubs would have money freed up to go after Hader, who is looking for a deal that exceeds Edwin Díaz’s 5-year, $102 million contract with the Mets. Hader, a 5-time All-Star, recorded a 1.28 ERA and 33 saves in 61 appearances with the Padres in 2023.

The Yankees officially announced their signing of right-hander Marcus Stroman, with outfielder Oscar González designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

The Athletic ($) | Levi Weaver and Ken Rosenthal: With several options floating out there beyond just Hader, it seemed that the Yankees were firmly in the bidding for Cuban star, Yariel Rodríguez. However, Rosenthal has reported the Jays are now optimistic they will land the reliever. Rodríguez has gotten up to the upper-90s and flashed a plus-plus breaker while dealing in the NPB in recent seasons.

I wanted Hader 3 years ago. Now I fear it may be too late for him to be a long range closer. What ever happened in 2022 could reoccur…

Not if Stanton .175 avg .264 obp .640 ops is in the lineup vs RHP I don't expect big things from Stanton, and not a fan of Judge in CF. My ideal lineup would have Dominguez in CF, Judge in RF and Soto at DH.

My ideal lineup would have Dominguez in CF, Judge in RF and Soto at DH. I don't think that Dominguez will see CF this season, especially coming off of his shoulder surgery. He might show up in LF. As long as Stanton is on the Yankees roster, he'll be at the DH spot.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Soto at DH vs. RHP… I think it’s time Stanton starts seeing a reduction in playing time instead of assuming the sleeping giant will reawaken some day. Reducing his playing time might make him want a trade and waive his no trade clause…

Hi Inger, I hope that you're feeling better.
Some YES posters might remember that when the off season started I had a wish list of players that I wanted the Yankees to acquire...
Soto or Bellinger Yamamoto Hader
We'll see what happens. As Meatloaf sang..."2 out of 3 ain't bad."

I rather see the money spent on starting pitching because we need some healthy arms in the starting rotation. Clipper
