Yankees Claim Michael Tonkin, Designate McKinley Moore By Darragh McDonald | April 25, 2024 at 2:30pm CDT MLB Rumors
The Yankees announced that they have claimed right-hander Michael Tonkin off waivers from the Mets. He had been designated for assignment by the Mets earlier this week. To open a roster spot for Tonkin, right-hander McKinley Moore was designated for assignment.
Tonkin, 34, has been getting passed around the league so far this year. He was non-tendered by Atlanta at the end of last season and then he was signed a MLB deal with the Mets. Shortly after the season started, he was designated for assignment and went to the Twins on a cash deal but then he was returned to the Mets on waivers. Now he’s on the move yet again and will join the Yankees.
Amid all those transactions, he has managed to throw 9 innings on the year. He’s allowed 6 earned runs for a flat ERA of 6.00, which obviously isn’t too impressive, but the peripherals are solid. He has struck out 23.9% of batters faced while walking 8.7% of them and keeping 44.4% of balls in play on the ground, with all of those rate stats coming in fairly close to league averages.
With Atlanta last year, he tossed 80 innings over 45 appearances. He had a 4.28 ERA in that time, as well as a 23.1% strikeout rate, 7.1% walk rate and 38.3% ground ball rate. He’s clearly an attractive enough bullpen arm that teams keep grabbing him, but he’s also out of options and keeps getting squeezed.
Since he’s out of options, the Yankees will need to make room for him on the active roster whenever he reports to the team. Of their bullpen arms, Ian Hamilton, Ron Marinaccio and Cody Morris all have options and could be sent down. Hamilton isn’t likely the one to be packing his bag since he’s entered a high-leverage role for the Yankees. He had 2 saves and 5 holds last year and has already added 4 more holds this year.
To get Tonkin onto the 40-man, the Yankees have bumped off Moore. He’s only been with the Yanks a short time, having been claimed off waivers from the Phillies in February. He has made 2 appearances for the Triple-A Scranton club, but he has walked 6 of the 9 batters he faced.
That continues a pattern of control problems for the righty. He walked 23.8% of batters faced in his MLB debut last year. In his 20 1/3 innings of minor league work in 2023, he struck out 40.7% of batters faced but he hasalso gave free passes to 24.2% of them.
The Yankees will now have 1 week to trade McKinley or pass him through waivers. The control problems will obviously be a concern to other teams but Moore’s also struck out 32.6% of batters faced throughout his entire minor league career. He averaged 97.2 miles per hour on his fastball during his MLB debut last year while also throwing a sweeper and a changeup. He still has a couple of options and could perhaps appeal to a club looking for a long-term project.

New York Yankees vs. Milwaukee Brewers: Series Preview Two division (co-)leaders playing in opposite directions match up as the team travels to Milwaukee for a three-game set. www.pinstripealley.com/2024/4/26/24140324/new-york-yankees-series-preview-milwaukee-brewers-probable-pitchers-gil-rodon-stromanThe Yankees had a very middling homestand after suffering their first series loss of the season. They won two out of three against the Rays in a narrow fashion, and when given a layup matchup against Oakland directly after them they continued to play inconsistently, especially on offense. The end result was a split of the four-game set, but given that the pitching staff held the A’s to three runs or less in all four games it’s a major indictment of their streaky lineup that could only manage to do damage in small intervals that they couldn’t walk away with the series win. Sufficiently stymied in the series finale, New York now has to wash it off and jump into a road trip that’ll take them to some much tougher opponents, beginning with the current NL Central leaders in the Milwaukee Brewers. If the Yankees are on uneven footing currently, the Brew Crew are finding their stride — they’re winners of six of their last eight contests. With that in mind, let’s see how these two staffs will match up against each other over the next three days. Friday: Luis Gil vs. Colin Rea (8:10 p.m. ET) Gil is coming off of easily his best start so far this season, when he tossed 5.2 innings against the Rays and struck out nine while walking three, allowing just one unearned run to cross. Gil’s gotten dinged for command issues throughout his career and it limited some of his earlier starts in the year where he’s flashed this potential, but he managed to keep things under wraps and deliver his longest outing to date. He’s been one of the team’s most effective pitchers, posting a 2.75 ERA over 19.2 innings, and if he can continue to establish his zone and get deeper into starts he’ll force some hard decisions for the Yankee brass as summer approaches and Gerrit Cole nears a return. On the other side, Rea is enjoying a strong start after emerging back onto the scene as a starter for Milwaukee. The 33-year-old righty hadn’t made a start since 2020 prior to last season, but managed to log 124.2 innings for the Brewers and earned a spot in the rotation for good, and he’s rewarded them with a 2.08 ERA in 21.2 innings this year. A major part of his adjustment in 2024 has been preventing the long ball, as he’s given up just two homers so far at half the rate he was serving them up last year. He doesn’t walk many batters and isn’t a dominant strikeout arm, so the Yankee bats are going to have some chances to put the ball in play and they’ll need to make it count. Saturday: Carlos Rodón vs. Joe Ross (7:10 p.m. ET) Rodón is also coming off of his best start of the year, this one a bigger standout as he shoved for seven innings of shutout ball in the series opener against Oakland. Rodón hasn’t had his put-away pitch working in 2024, racking up just 22 strikeouts in his 26.2 innings, but has still been effective enough compiling a 2.70 ERA. The biggest issue plaguing him has been the amount of batters that he’s allowed to stay in at-bats after getting ahead of early, resulting in some elevated pitch counts in most of his outings. Keep an eye out for how he mixes in his pitch selection over the first few innings — if he’s can get his slider mixed in out of the gate he’ll start looking more and more like the second ace the team needed. Ross is in his first season in Milwaukee after spending the first six seasons of his career over in Washington, and the 30-year-old has remained about league-average throughout. His 4.05 ERA in 20 innings is respectable, but like Rea he’s been effective at preventing home runs, having coughed up just one all season. That’s a tough task for a team as homer-dependent as the Yankees are currently, especially given the struggles of some of their main boppers, so don’t overlook Ross’ turn on the mound here. Sunday: Marcus Stroman vs. Tobias Myers (2:10 p.m. ET) Stroman has stepped up in the absence of Cole and been the Yankees’ number one pitcher so far, pitching to a 2.93 ERA over 27.2 innings and collecting 28 strikeouts in the process. While he hasn’t had the gem outing that pitchers like Rodón or Nestor Cortes have had, he’s been easily the most consistent, pitching into the sixth inning or later in all but one of his starts. His most recent outing saw him protect an early 4-1 lead and narrowly earn the win, getting burned for two solo homers in the process but stranding a fair share of runners on the basepaths. Myers made his MLB debut on Tuesday, getting outdueled in Pittsburgh but more than holding his own in the process. He lasted five innings, scattering four hits and earning four strikeouts while getting popped for a solo shot by Andrew McCutchen in the first inning. He battled through a hectic second inning that saw him give up a pair of two-out singles and a wild pitch, but settled down from there and cruised until he was pulled. Myers had a mostly-terrible showing the last few years in the minors, limited to 76 innings across 22 starts in 2022 before pitching to a 4.93 ERA over 140.2 innings last year, so of the three starters that New York will face he should be their best option to work out the kinks in their offense.

The Yankees optioned RHP Cody Morris to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Sat in the bullpen for about a week but never got in a game. Nice week’s work and pay at the MLB minimum. I hope they call me next time they want a “filler”… If they pay out based on 52 weeks that’s about a $15,000 week at the minimum. Knowing my luck I’d be called into a game and my secret would be out. I can’t throw the ball that far anymore, I’d look like Paul O’Niell out there. Matt Blake at the mound. “what’s up, inger? All ya hafta to do here is throw the ball over the plate.” “I can’t throw it that far.” ] “Well, just keep walking guys until we get Trevino warmed up I guess then. Pick up your check on your way out.”…

Especially when he finds out his staff signed a 70-year old pitcher with no real experience pitching…

It is so evident no huge moves will be made until Soto signed. There might be a trade deadline move but with Cashman's dumpster diving and unwilling to deal a prospect do you think it will be a big move? I don't care what BorASS says Soto seems to be loving being a Yankee right now. Cashman should be doing everything possible to get an extension.

The Athletic ($) | Brendan Kuty: Perhaps the lowest point of a bad 2023 season was a very public showing up of Yankee pitching coach Matt Blake by Carlos Rodón. The moment was such a microcosm for the disaster season Rodón had, but to his credit, the left-hander made strides to do right by his coach. An early apology wasn’t enough to rebuild a fractured trust, but a closer relationship over the last eight months has the two in a better spot then they’ve been since Carlos’ signing.

Sports Illustrated | Pat McAvoy: Gerrit Cole continues to recover from arm inflammation, but it’s still a little early for the game’s best pitcher to return to the Yankees. He didn’t travel with the Yankees on their seven-game swing through Milwaukee and Baltimore, but expects to be throwing from the mound before the road trip is over. From there, a rehab assignment should be the last box to check before Cole’s anticipated June return.

CBS Sports: Speaking of rehabbing arms, prospect Jasson Domínguez is throwing from 135 feet per manager Aaron Boone. Domínguez is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery last fall, and as a 21-year-old top prospect, the Yankees are taking their time with the superstar-hopeful’s recovery. It still likely won’t be until summer that we see Jasson back in pinstripes, meaning the offense will have to pick itself up for now.
