Yankeesource: Anthony Volpe is 13th in MLB in fWAR (1.8). Only 9 players with a 2 or higher. The Yankees are getting big value from Volpe (offense and defense) so far this year.

Pinstripes Nation: The rise of Luis Gil as a potent pitching force for the New York Yankees has almost filled the rotation gap caused by Gerrit Cole’s injury. His impressive showing has even earned him high praise from Boston Red Sox legend and Hall of Famer Pedro Martínez.
Martínez expressed great admiration for Luis Gil’s potential, emphasizing that if given the opportunity to mature and adapt to the challenges of the major leagues, he could develop into an exceptional player. While acknowledging that the pitcher is still refining his skills and growing as a pitcher, the Boston legend highlighted the young hurler’s promising performances in his limited time at the highest level.
“I love what I’m seeing from this kid,” Martinez said. “He has the opportunity to become really special. If they let him mature and get accustomed to doing what he needs to do. He’s still raw, make no mistake about it, he’s still raw. But as you can see in an abbreviated time in the big leagues, he’s shown that he can be special and I hope they continue to let him pitch in the starting rotation and not have him wander around.”

ESPN: Speaking of injury rehab... the ace continued to work his way back to the Bronx. Gerrit Cole threw 29 pitches Saturday, including 13 curveballs. His fastball was hitting 89 mph. In his next couple of outings, the plan is to toss a couple of simulated innings. Meanwhile, DJ LeMahieu took some swings off the also-rehabbing JT Brubaker in Tampa at the team complex. Finally, reliever Tommy Kahnle is set to join Double-A Somerset Tuesday, coincidentally the day Cole might throw his next outing. The cavalry is coming. Last night in a Tampa game: RHP Tommy Kahnle: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K good to hear reinforcements are on the way. DJ will certainly help in the IF as cabrera after his hot start has regressed. wonder what happens to him and berti when he's activated.
kahnle will definitely bolster the bullpen. does sound like cole's weeks or as much as a month away if he's only hitting 89 mph.

New York Post | Greg Joyce: Unlike Frankie Montas, Lou Trivino was healthy and solid after coming over to the Yankees at the 2022 Trade Deadline, but it’s been a rocky road from the beginning of 2023 onward. He underwent Tommy John surgery and missed last season, so the free agent had to accept a one-year, $1.5 million contract with a club option for 2025. Trivino had been rehabbing with an eye toward returning sometime in early summer, but that plan is on hold for now. He’s in the second week of a shutdown for elbow inflammation.
In better long-injured 2022 reliever news, Scott Effross will start facing hitters soon. He had Tommy John surgery himself that October and December 2023 back surgery altered his rehab calendar. He won’t be joining the Yankees anytime soon, but if he could be an addition in a couple months, he’d be welcome.

The 11 hitters with the fastest bats in MLB 1) Giancarlo Stanton, Yankees: 80.6 mph Stanton is the king of bat speed. There's Big G, and then there's everybody else. Stanton is the only hitter in baseball with an average swing speed over 80 mph. Keep in mind that the MLB average swing speed is 72 mph. The threshold for a "fast swing" is 75-plus mph. So we repeat: Stanton is averaging over 80 mph. An incredible 98% of Stanton's competitive swings qualify as fast swings. No other hitter is even close -- Kyle Schwarber is second in fast-swing rate at 74%. And the 6-foot-6 slugger has generated a bat speed of 80 mph or higher on 121 of his 199 competitive swings this season. That's nearly double anyone else -- Oneil Cruz is next with 66 swings at 80-plus mph. So it's no wonder that Stanton just hit the two hardest home runs of the 2024 season. On his 119.9 mph homer on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium, he had a swing speed of 83.7 mph. On his 118.8 mph homer the day before, he had a swing speed of 85.1 mph. The "Stantonian blast" couldn't exist without his unparalleled bat speed. 7) Aaron Judge, Yankees: 76.5 mph You were probably waiting for Judge's name to pop up. Because for every Stantonian blast, there's a Judgian blast to go with it. The Yankees superstar comes in at No. 7 . Judge doesn't sell out with every single hack like Stanton does, but the 6-foot-7 slugger's swing is every bit as dangerous. Even though he got off to a slow start by his standards, Judge ranks among the league leaders in blasts, with 44. And he's had some big swings of late. On his 115.7 mph, 473-foot home run at Yankee Stadium on Thursday -- tied with Mike Trout for the longest of 2024 -- he had a bat speed of 79.4 mph. On his 115.9 mph, 441-foot homer against the Brewers the week before, he had a bat speed of 80.3 mph. And he reached double-digit homers on Sunday, tying him for fourth-most in the AL, with a 78.4 mph swing to go oppo at The Trop against the Rays. 10) Juan Soto, Yankees: 76.1 mph Soto in pinstripes has been everything the Yankees dreamed of. He's the early-season AL MVP frontrunner and is the toughest at-bat in baseball. Soto's fast bat and mastery of the strike zone combine to let him cover whatever a pitcher throws at him. He doesn't just have top-10 bat speed in the Majors, he also squares the ball up at one of the highest rates of any hitter, on close to 40% of his swings. And because so many of those swings are fast swings, above the 75 mph threshold, Soto is also one of the very best hitters at blasting the baseball. Nearly one of every four Soto swings results in a blast, second only to William Conteras and just ahead of Shohei Ohtani. www.mlb.com/news/mlb-bat-speed-leaders-for-2024

New York Yankees vs. Minnesota Twins: Series Preview Two playoff contenders meet up for a three-game set in the Twin Cities. www.pinstripealley.com/2024/5/14/24156217/new-york-yankees-minnesota-twins-series-preview-probable-pitchers-rodon-stroman-schmidtThe Yankees took care of business to start their latest road trip, and after a day off, they enter Tuesday tied for the top spot in the AL East once again. They could move into an outright lead if they can continue their momentum and win their fourth straight series, but to do so they’ll have to best a solid team in its own right in Minnesota. It’s been a rollercoaster season for the Twins, who started out 2024 in the hole with a 6-12 start — well below what some of their contemporaries in the AL Central were managing. However, they weren’t very healthy for that opening run and since getting some of their regulars back, Minnesota’s been undeniably the hottest team in baseball. They are winners of 17 of their last 20, including a run of 12 in a row (their longest streak since the championship 1991), and have catapulted themselves back into the postseason discussion. It’s tough to catch a team that’s red-hot and playing at home, but you have to meet who’s in front of you head-on. So let’s see how the Yankees will match up in this series. Tuesday: Carlos Rodón vs. Chris Paddack (7:40 p.m. ET) Carlos Rodón is putting together a very solid sophomore season in New York, and he bounced back well after his first true stinker of the year. Baltimore roughed him up for six runs and three homers over four inning at the start of the month, but his last outing against Houston was a 6.1 inning, two-run gem. Overall Rodón has been as advertised, pitching to a 3.56 ERA over 43 innings with minimal home run troubles outside of that stumble in Baltimore. Paddack is in his third year as a Twin, but this is already the deepest he’s gone in a season with them after Tommy John surgery wiped most of his first two years down the drain. He returned late last year as a reliever for their postseason run, but has since returned to the rotation and done a serviceable job. Paddack has a 4.34 ERA in 37.1 innings, and like Rodón only really has one bad game on his resume this year (ironically also against Baltimore). He’s coming off of a 10-strikeout performance against Seattle where he allowed nine baserunners but only gave up one run, and that’s the biggest knock against Paddack so far — he’ll allow plenty of traffic, but has been able to strand most of it. Wednesday: Marcus Stroman vs. Pablo López (7:40 p.m. ET) Stroman has been the consistent mid-tier starter that the Yankees needed to add to their rotation throughout this year, pitching to a 3.80 ERA in 42.2 innings, but he hasn’t had many sterling performances compared to the rest of the team’s arms. He got blitzed for three runs in the first inning of his last start against Houston, but locked in to remain in the game for 5.2 innings while only giving up one more run, a definitive example of the type of effort he’s been putting in since putting on the pinstripes. López was brought in to be the co-ace alongside Sonny Gray last year, and now with Gray in St. Louis the onus has been on López to deliver — and he has. The since-extended López has thrown 44 innings and earned a 3.89 ERA with 55 strikeouts to this point, and his last outing was a 6.1 inning, 10-K masterpiece. He’s only walked eight batters all year as well, so getting a rally started against him is going to be a difficult task. Thursday: Clarke Schmidt vs. Joe Ryan (1:10 p.m. ET) Schmidt’s journey from potential fifth-starter to one of the better pitchers on the staff has been one to watch with delight. His main weakness, getting late into ballgames, has been highlighted over and over but he managed to persevere his last time out against Tampa — he pitched 6.2 shutout innings in what was easily his best start of the year and likely the best of his career. Overall, Schmidt’s got a 2.95 ERA over 42.2 innings this year and he’s doing his best to firmly entrench his place in the rotation. Similarly, Joe Ryan’s had a breakout 2024 after two solid but unspectacular years in the Twins’ rotation. Ryan owns a 3.21 ERA over 47.1 innings with 53 strikeouts to his name, and has been even better than López with his control, walking just six batters. He’s also coming off of one of his best starts of the year, a seven-inning one-run gem against Toronto, completing a trio of closely-contested pitching matchups for the Yanks to deal with this week.

MLB.com | Bryan Hoch: Top prospect Jasson Domínguez started his rehab assignment with the Low -A Tampa Tarpons (he’ll stick to DH for two weeks), while Tommy Kahnle took his to the Double-A Somerset Patriots (and dominated). In the meantime, Gerrit Cole threw “about” 36 pitches in another bullpen session and DJ LeMahieu had “four or five” live at-bats at the Yankees’ complex in Tampa.
The news on LeMahieu seems to have him going to Somerset later this week. Ideally, this rehab assignment works out better than his last one.

ESPN | Jorge Castillo: The Yankees’ 2024 bullpen is definitely not the same as it was in 2023. The names, in particular, are very much different. Some of last year’s relievers are gone, others are injured. The results, however, have been very similar. The Yankees have a dominant bullpen, and one of the holdovers from that 2023 group is leading the way this year: Clay Holmes.
Castillo said Holmes “might be the best closer in baseball” and you know what? He has a very good case for the consideration. Holmes still has a perfect 0.00 ERA and 21 strikeouts with three walks in 18.1 innings, leading the American League with 12 saves.
Holmes teammates love and praise him, and opposing managers have stated just how tough he is. He is the only qualified reliever yet to concede an earned run this season. (Yes, believe it or not, Mason Miller gave up two on Opening Day!)

The Athletic | Brendan Kuty ($): Andy Pettitte is in his second year as a special advisor for the Yankees. Unlike a regular pitching coach, he is not always around. However, he has managed to establish a strong rapport with last night’s winning pitcher, Carlos Rodón. No. 46 has become something of a strategist for the fellow southpaw. The two men talk about numerous topics: children, the outdoors, and many others. When they talk baseball, however, good things happen as you probably can expect.
Pettitte is one of the men responsible for Rodón migrating from a two-pitch approach highlighting his four-seamer and slider to having a more diverse repertoire, including a cutter and a changeup. Pettitte’s influence in the staff is considerable, as Stroman and Rodón noted in the article.
“Everyone likes Andy Pettitte,” Rodón said. “It’s hard not to listen to a guy like that.”

FanGraphs | Michael Baumann: Clarke Schmidt is turning the corner as a big league starter. He is off to the best start of his career and is even progressing through this season. As Baumann points out, that hasn’t come from any significant overhaul in his pitch repertoire, rather, it stems from landing his heater in the zone more often and consistently locating his high spin breaking balls low in the zone or under it. His strikeout rate has risen to the 75th percentile. Schmidt has clearly cemented himself as a middle of the rotation starter.
