Trevino takes a slider for a strike, then somehow tops a sinker at the top of the zone to Mead, he throws out Trevino, 1 down.

And another terrible balk call by this crew, albeit one of zero consequence.

Curve drops into the high outside corner, 0-1 Chases a cutter way up and in for no reason, fouled it back over the screen behind home. 0-2 Curve is outside, 1-2 Chases a FB at least 4-6 inches high above the inner 3rd, and K's, 2 down.

Pitchers have adjusted to Volpe's change in approach. It's clear that Volpe now has to make another adjustment.

Wondering if it would have been beneficial leaving Volpe down in the lineup longer. He's been pressing since moving up to leadoff.

FB outside to Volpe, 1-0 Can't lay off the cutter going outside 2-3 inches, 1-1 Late on a FB on the inside corner, 1-2 Very few of Civale's pitches are down the middle, unlike Gil Slider outside near the knees away, Volpe spoils. Big breaking curve goes low, and Volpe barely spoils. FB just above the zone, too close to take, fouled back. Volpe at least working him a bit here. Civale misses location badly on a curve, was supposed to be outside but is flipped in the zone up and in, and Volpe can't time it, grounds to 3rd, Paredes takes it on the move, his throw is offline to the right field side, but Shenton saves it with a good backhand stretch. Inning over
Top 5, 1-1.
12 pitch 1-2-3 for Civale and 73 through 4.
Rortvedt, Caballero and Diaz for the Rays in the 5th.

They call another Balk on Gil claiming he didn't come to a full stop on the first 1-2 to Mead. Then he takes a change almost down the middle for the ꓘ, inning over. That 1st pitch "FB" at 91.5 was a misidentified change on Gameday. Bottom 4, 1-1. 12 pitches for Gil in the 4th, and 68 through 4. Should make it through 5 now, and possibly into the 6th. Trevino, Cabrera and Volpe for the Yanks. The Rays are brilliantly trying to take advantage of and distract a young pitcher in a close game. I hope he overcomes the strategy…

Rortvedt... FB inside, 1-0 FB outer 3rd, fouled back. Change outside topped foul, 1-2 FB outer 3rd, but Rortvedt spoils. Flies open a bit, misses up with a FB Same thing, change way outside, from 1-2 to 3-2. Rays working his pitch count again. Slider inner 3rd, Rortvedt drops to 1 knee off balance but pulls it foul Same thing on a FB out of the zone down and in. 10th pitch of the at bat is a FB right on the inside corner at 98 for the ꓘ. 1 down

Wondering if it would have been beneficial leaving Volpe down in the lineup longer. He's been pressing since moving up to leadoff. He handled it well at the time of the move. I think it’s too soon to call it a failure. Just a slump…

Steve Pearce I mean.
Caballero gets a 1-1 slider just inside middle, popped high to left, Verdugo battles the wind and catches, 2 down.
