Yep, Bruins and Celtics both. First the Celtics since 1957 because they were so good and I really enjoy winning. Although I stayed with them through the crappy years too, I never change teams. A few years later I started following the NHL -- there were only six teams at that time -- and since the Bruins also played in Boston Garden, I just went with them. But really, I barely pay attention to either the NBA or NHL anymore. Used to be all-in on both, just got tired of the changes. Oddly enough I have never rooted for any of the Philly teams, and I still root for both the Eagles and 76ers to lose. The Phillies I pull for in the NL only, and the Flyers are harmless enough. I am guessing you are a NY guy in all the sports, which is actually more normal than my smorgasbord of teams. No worries my beantown loving friend. 😆 I’m just joking with you. Yes, I am Yankees, Giants, and Knicks. The best is that you are a Cleveland browns fan too. Oh boy, that’s a tough one. Did you watch back when Elway beat them in the AFC championship game I think it was? "Beantown-loving friend" triggers me! Haha. And yes, I vividly remember the 1987 AFC championship game in which Elway engineered a 98-yard drive as time expired to tie the game, which Denver won in OT. And of course the very next year in the AFC Championship game against Denver, Ernest Byner of the Browns fumbled as he was heading in for a game winning touchdown. "The Drive" and "The Fumble" summed up the Browns' futility for decades. Last NFL Championship was 1964.

If he could learn to concentrate, we could have something with Gil. His overall stuff is really good. Opponents were only hitting .133 off him going into yesterday's game. I feel like the Yankees are really mis managing Gil if they don't have the coaching in place to get him to trust his stuff and if they don't get it figured out he will be gone soon and become an ace on another team as he continues to develop. If he did not walk so many guys trying to strike everyone out he would be so great. With the stuff he has he should be attacking the strike zone. I feel like the Yankees will screw this up though and send him to the minors or the pen when Cole comes back. Hard to believe Gil's WHIP is only 1.27 with all those walks. Not sure I agree with this ... opponents batting .133 and 2.75 ERA one year after recovering from TJS Looks like they are doing everything right to me. What makes you thaink he'll be gone soon?

Yep. Formerly the California Golden Seals and the last pro franchise in the four major sports to actually fold. If memory serves they merged with the then Minnesota North Stars. I believe that you are correct about them merging with the Noth Stars.
Switching leagues for a second... I wonder how many NBA fans today remember the Cincinnati Royals lead by the great Oscar Robertson. Yes, the Royals had The Big O and Jerry Lucas and Jack Twyman and Wayne Embry and Adrian Smith among others. Soon to become the Kansas City Kings and then the Sacramento Kings. And originally the Rochester Royals when three of the NBA's eight teams were in the state of New York (the Knicks and the Syracuse Nats, later the Philadelphia 76ers.)

I never change teams either, as a young boy I was a fan of the Yankees, Colts and Blackhawks. Still am today and like you have been through some lean years. I'm friends with some New Yorkers who also moved to the west coast, they seem equal fans of the Yankees and Giants. I can only invest my heart into one team in each sport.

There's a great article in the latest Sports Illustrated issue re Oscar Robertson and his Indiana State High School Championship team (Crispus Attucks High) in 1955, the year following the much more widely known "Hoosiers" story of Milan High School.

I had mixed feelings when MLB awarded Colorado an NL team...the Rockies. I really wanted to get behind the team, but I also wanted to see the Yanks during the regular season...well before interleague play. Impossible to root for one team "with exceptions".

In the early to mid-60s when you probably began following sports those were all elite teams. Not sure if you're old enough to recall the 61 Yankees. I know the Blackhawks won the cup in 61 before their long hiatus and the immortal Johnny U had the Colts always in the mix. Those Hawks teams had Bobby Hull (pre-Dennis) and Stan Mikita and Eric Nesterenko and Chico Maki and the great Pierre Pilote. What's amazing is that Glen Hall played all 70 games in goal that year and the next. I would have hated to have been the backup goalie on those teams. Pretty boring job.

When I retired from work 10 years ago, my staff gave me a signed Johnny U helmet as a departing gift. Another guy everyone rooted for. Except maybe Giants fans. Dick Butkus said Johnny U was the only QB who shouldn't have been made to wear a skirt while playing in a tribute to his toughness. Can you imagine Butkis playing in todays game where if you breath too hard on a QB you are flagged?

That iconic photograph of an exhausted Tittle on his knees will always stick in my head. Texas boy who wore the purple and gold at LSU, where you can find roads named Alvin Dark and YA Tittle drives.

Just that he will hit free agency soon and the Yanks may not be willing to give him the money other teams might throw out there if they see the potential top of the line starter in him.
