Let's hope the Yanks can score in more than one inning tonight. I'm batching it, so I should be around.

Second night for Wells. Does anyone know if Trevino is hurt??? I hope it's because they're trying to get Wells, going. He's hit into some bad luck and has more walks than strikeouts, so he's not exactly swinging at air all the time. I'd love to see him start hitting. I've followed scouting on Wells for some years and a lot of people think he will hit in this league. His question mark has always been his defense.

against joe boyle w a 7.23 ERA, tonight's game should be one where the offense puts some runs up. however he is a big (6' 7") RH'er who averages 97 on his fastball. if he commands who knows.
not sure what's going on w trevino. 2 games off in a row. haven't heard about any injury (yet). tonight is against a RH so maybe that's why or they wanna get wells going.
hopefully tonight is the night torres breaks out. really need to take these next 2 games to win the series especially heading into the weekend against 2 tough teams on the road.

Boyle should be ripe for the picking. Need the offense to actually produce today. It's getting a little late to be early.

Why is Volpe still leading off? Why is Judge still batting 3rd?
We went from a different lineup everyday last year to refusing to change it when it needs to be this year.

Joe Boyle starts for the A's. He's the A's version of Luis Gil, but with even worse command. Drafted by the Reds in the 5th round in 2020, then traded to the A's at the trade delaine last year for pitch Sam Moll.
His stuff was good enough that at AA and AAA last year, he allowed just 6 hits per 9 innings, and one HR every 17 innings, so that even though he walked more than 7 per 9 innings, he still kept his ERA at 3.84. The WHIP was very high, 1.500. In his 3-start callup cup of coffee late last season, he started 3 games, pitched 16 innings, allowed 8 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned, 1 HR just 5 BB and 15 K. His walk rate in that tiny sample was less than half of what it had been in any of his three minor league seasons, so his ERA was 1.69 and the WHIP was 0.813.
To no one's surprise so far this season, his BB problems are back. In 4 starts, he's pitched 18 2/3 inning, allowed 20 hits, 16 runs, 15 earned, 1 HR, and 12 BB with 18 K's. His ERA is 7.28 and the WHIP is a sky-high 1.714. His record this season is not quite as bleak as it looks: Good 5 innings starts against both the Tigers and the Nationals, while the Red Sox and Guardians knocked him around quite a bit.
He's still rookie eligible as of now. Fangraphs has him as the #18 prospect in the A's organization. Their scouring grades...FB: 60 now, 70 future; Slider:60, Curve: 60; Command: 20 now, 30 future, meaning that his command is so bad that even though he has plus-plus curve and change and a Fb that will be elite someday, his command is that a pitcher completely incapable of pitching in the majors. The profile is that of a middle/long/setup reliever, but the A's are rebuilding, so they'll give him a long chance to make it as a starter. Tonight's start will be the first time that Boyle has pitched against the Yankees, and the only player on their roster who's ever faced him in the majors is Juan Soto, who's 1 for 2 against him.
Repertoire: As mentioned in his scouting report, Boyle is a 3 pitch righty: FB at 96-7 about 60$ of the time, slider 87 about 34% of the time and a curve 80 about once an inning.
=================
Clarke "Mr. Infuriating" Schmidt. The Song Remains The Same; good-to-excellent stuff, poor command of it, and teams figure him out the 3rd time around the order, so that he rarely makes it through 6 innings even if he's pitching a good game. In 4 starts, Schmidt is 1-0 with 3 no-decisions (because he can't stay in the game long enough to earn a decision either way most nights, because he's in and out of trouble several innings every start). He's pitched 20 innings, allowed 23 hits, 8 runs, 7 earned, 2 HR, 8 BB and struck out 23. His ERA is 3.15, but his WHIP is a more representative 1.550.
Schmidt has made 3 starts against the A's, and hasn't fared very well. He's 2-1 with a 5.17 ERA. in 15 2/3 innings, he's allowed 18 hits, 9 runs, all earned, 1 HR, 6 BB and struck out 17. HIs WHIP against Oakland is a high 1.532. He made two starts against the A's last year, giving up 2 runs in 6 innings in a 10-5 win at home in May, and 3 runs in 5 1/3 innings in a 10-4 win in Oakland in June. The A's team quadruple slash line vs. Schmidt is a miserable .305/.358/.424/.782
Against the A's, Stroman has a solid record. In 7 starts against them, he's 1-1 with 5 no-decisions. In 42 1/3 innings, he's allowed 38 hits, 18 runs, 17 earned, 17 BB and K'd 40, and has allowed them just 3 HR, which is probably why his ERA against them is a decent 3.61, while the WHIP is a rather high 1.299. The A's team quadruple slash line against him is .238/.309/.331/.640

Yanks' lineup vs. Blackburn
As mentioned above, the only Yankee who's faced Boyle is Soto, whos' 1-2 against him.
==============
A''s lineup vs. Schmidt:
Ruiz is 0-5 with 2 K Noda is 0-4 with 2 BB and 1 K Rooker is 0-3 with 1 K Brown is 4 for 5 with a RBI and a K Nevin is 2-2 Langeliers is 2 for 6 with 4 K Allen is 1-3 with a double and a K And if he gets the start, Bleday is 1 for 3 against him with a RBI and 2 BB. Toro and Butler have never faced Schmidt.
No other A's player has faced Schmidt before.
EDIT: Ruiz sitting in favor of Bleday. Platoon move, it looks like.

Last night, the Yanks hung on to top the A's 4-3. The Guardians beat the Red Sox, 4-1 to maintain their best record in MLB at 17-6. They've now won 5 in a row and 7 of since the Yanks took the series in Cleveland 10 days ago, the only series the Guardians have lost so far this season. The Tigers beat the Rays, 4-2. The Royals beat the Jays, 3-2 and the Angels took a 7-0 lead, scoring 7 in the first four innings, and hung on to win 7-4. The game the Yanks lost to the entire division a couple of nights ago came back to them last night. Yanks pop back over the Orioles into 1st by 1/2 game. The Sox and Jays both slip to 3 games back and 2 games over .500. The Rays fall under .500 by a game and are now 4 1/2 games out of first.

Why is Volpe still leading off? Why is Judge still batting 3rd? We went from a different lineup everyday last year to refusing to change it when it needs to be this year. The team's best leadoff hitter would be Soto The team's best #2 hitter would be Soto The team's best #3 hitter would also be Soto The really don't have anyone else to leadoff unless Volpe breaks out of this funk he's in.

My webcast is not the Prime Delayed Video Yankees cast; it's the A's cablecast. I still expect to be 2-4 pitches behind live action as shown on Gameday at MLB.com.

O's had a 4:00 EDT start on getaway day in Anaheim, they lead the Angels 6-4, top 9. Sox lead the Indians 2-0 top 3 in Cleveland. Sox trying to salvage the 3rd game of that series. Tigers have a 1-0 lead on the Rays, bottom 1st in Tampa Jays are in KC for a 7:35 EDT start, Rodriguez vs. Marsh in that one.
