Colin Rea starts for the Brewers. He's bounced in an out of the majors leagues since 2014, he missed all of 2017 after Tommy John surgery, and spent all of 2022 in NPB with the Fukuoka (no, that's really the Anglicized version of the name of a Japanese prefecture and Japanese city, population over 2.5 million people. The Brewers are his 4th team this is his 2nd stint with, signing with Milwaukee as a free agent after returning from Japan in the 2022-23 offseason and again this past offseason.
He had an OK season for the Brewers last year, in more or less the fifth starter's slot. In 26 games and 22 starts, he went 6-6 with an ERA of 4.55. In 124 2/3 innings, he allowed 110, 65 runs, 63 earned, 23 HR, 38 BB and struck out 110 batters. His WHIP was a solid 1.187. He pitched outstanding ball down the stretch for the Brewers as they pulled away from the Cubs and Reds to win the Central. He had a 2.22 ERA in 3 starts and 3 relief appearances, 24 1/3 innings, 15 hits, 6 runs, 4 runs, 6 BB and 25 K. That month, his WHIP was 0.86. This year, in 4 starts, he's continued his brilliant work from September. In 4 starts, he's 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA. In 21 2/3 innings, he's allowed 22 hits, 6 runs, 5 earned, 2 HR, 6 BB and 14 K, with a WHIP of 1.292. His only so-so start came against the very tough Orioles lineup in Camden Yards.
This will be his 3rd career start against the Yanks. In the first two, he's 1-0 with an ERA of 2.53. In 10 2/3 innings, he's allowed 7 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned, 2 HR, 3 BB and K'd 11, and his WHIP against is 0.938. Last year, he faced the Yanks in early September in a game at the Stadium and took a no-decision when he gave up 2 runs in 4 2/3 innings in a game the Brewers won 8-2. The Yankee team quadruple slash line against Rea is .184/.262/.368/.630
Repertoire: From his Pitch Type table at Fangraphs, Rea looks like a "kitchen sink" 5-pitch righty of a type the Yanks have had a lot of trouble with recently. He hasn't changed his pitch mis much since last season, as you might expect given his success late late year. He throws a FB averaging 92 not quite half the time, a cutter at 87-88 about 26% of the time, a slider 82 about 16% of the time, a curve at 78 about 7% of the time and splitter at 85 roughly 3 times a start.
================= For the Yankees, tonight is Luis Gil's turn. You know the drill: elite stuff, and if he has command of it he can dominate, and if he doesn't, he'll walk the ballpark and be done before the 4th inning ends. This is his 5th start of the season. In the first four, he's 1-1 with a 2.75 ERA. In 19 2/3 innings, he's allowed just 8 hits, 7 runs, 6 earned, a league-leading 17 BB and struck out 29. Despite walking almost 8 per 9 innings, his WHIP is a respectable 1.271. The league opposing batter quadruple slash line vs. Gil is a psychedelic .125/.313/.188/.501. His most recent start was the best of the four: 5 2/3 innings against the Rays, allowing just 2 hits, 1 run (unearned) with 3 BB and 9 K. Tonight will be his first ever appearance against the Brewers.

Gleyber needs a night off. Hoping for a big offense night but last night was frustrating watching. He went 2 for 4 last night... He had 2 nice games at bat and hoping he breaks out but the mental errors need to stop. Just can't have it. AND I'm still a huge Gleyber fan.

Yanks' lineup vs. Rea
Volpe is 0-2 with 2 K Soto is 0-2 with 1 K Judge is 1-1 with 1 BB Rizzo is 1-2 with a RBI and a BB Stanton has never faced him. Torres is 0-2 with 1 K Verdugo has never faced him. Cabrera is 0-2 Wells is 0-2
And if the analyst starts Grisham over Stanton, moving Judge or Soto to DH, Grisham is 0-3 vs. Rea. ==============
Brewers' lineup vs. Gil
While Gil has never faced the Brewers, two of their hitters have batted against Gil before.
Bauers is 0-2 with a K Miller is 0-1 with 1 BB and 1 K.

Last night, lost to the A's 3-1. The O's and Rays had last night off, but the Red Sox lost to the Guardians 6-4, and the Royals beat the Jays, 2-1. The Yanks come into today percentage points behind the O's; both teams are 8 games over .500 and notionally "tied" for 1st. The Sox are in 3rd, 3 games behind both the Yanks and O's, and the Jays and Rays are tied for 4th-5th, 1 behind the Sox and 4 behind the Yanks and O's.

One more thing about tonight's matchup: I haven't found any good way to check this, but tonight's matchup almost certainly is tied for major league record for the fewest letters in the last names of the two starting pitchers, with 6.

1st period over in the Rangers game, Rangers lead 2-1 with a chance to take the big 3-0 lead in games if they win tonight. Caps were on a power play when the period ended, Caps will carry over 36 seconds with the man advantage into the 2nd pd.
