The way Holmes had been pitching I wouldn’t want to have to hit against him. I’ve never seen him better…

I am curious if there is anyone else in MLB that runs slower than Stanton?

Torres misses a FB near middle, 0-1 Then goes to deep right center with a Fb at the top inside middle, and nearly steals a HR, but Perez runs it down on the track to end the inning.
Top 9, 5-3 Yanks. Holmes will come back out for the 9th to try to close it out against Ibanez, Torkelson and McKinstry If the K zone remains 23 inches wide, he's got a pretty good shot.

Woodford Reserve Double Barreled. Far better than they deserve. And NO bitters or Club Soda like some frou-frou barkeeps do. I got that dictate directly from the bartender at the Brown Hotel in Louisville. Where the scrumptious Hot Brown was conceived. Simplicity is usually the best bet in so many things. Mint, simple syrup, Bourbon, and crushed ice. Splash of H2O for the lightweights. Bitters neither required nor needed. My philosophy exactly. The way they drank it on the veranda 200 years ago.

Only those Yankee teams could have Johnny Mize as a bench player (granted ages 36-40). A vastly underrated Hall of Famer with a 158 OPS+ for his career, who lost over three full seasons to WWII between the ages of 29 and 33 - generally considered a baseball player's prime. After returning from the war, he led all of baseball in 1946 with 51 homers, 138 RBIs, and 137 runs. And, Mize wasn't legging out any hits, despite the sobriquet of "The Big Cat," due to a devastating leg injury he suffered in 1934. Teammates said Mize never swung at a bad pitch (Juan Soto like). Mize held the single-season home run record for the Cardinals until it was broken by Mark "I Plead The Fifth" McGwire in 1998. When he retired after the 1953 season, Mize’s 359 career home runs ranked sixth all-time. He also had a .312 career batting average, .397 on-base percentage, 2,011 hits, and 1,337 RBIs over 15 major-league seasons. Altogether, Mize had won five World Series titles, been selected for 10 all-star games, won a batting title, and finished in the top five of the MVP voting four times, including two runner-up finishes. You're darn tootin' Rizz. A favorite of the late great MrG. When he retired in 1953 the only players who had more HRs were Babe, Foxx, Ott, Lou, Williams and Joe D (who had two more.) Big Cat was in the Top Ten in HRs until 1961, when Mantle and Mathews bumped him out. A few years back I had reason to spend a few nights in Clemson SC. It was about a one-hour drive from there to Demorest GA, where Johnny Mize was born and where he died. There is an interesting museum there on the campus of Piedmont University containing memorabilia he collected during his career. He was that rare player who collected baseball artifacts. Stuff from Babe Ruth (who married Mize's cousin Clare Hodgson) and Joe D. and Dizzy Dean and Pepper Martin and Mel Ott and Ty Cobb (who was also a distant cousin) and many others. Worth a stop on the very off-chance you find yourself in northeastern Georgia. Just making a cameo appearance today comrades. Today is our annual Derby Day Julep Jamboree, so I need to be bartender for a small gathering of freeloaders. In fact I'm test driving a Mint Julep as I speak. Need to make sure they're worthy of our guests. Seems okay so far. Hey pipps, good to see you in a cameo. If you ever need a bartender. give me a call. Have shaker, will travel.

Sinker 3 inches outside at 95 knee high, called a strike anyway. Slider outside, 1-2

Sinker just inside the outside corner, spoiled off 3rd. Still 1-2 Slider low away, Ibanez starts but stops well in time, 2-2 Tries to scissors him with a sinker running back to the corner, but he leaves it above the waist and Ibanez goes right with it through the right side for a leadoff single.
Torkelson is 1-5 vs. Holmes with a BB and 3 K.

1st pitch is a sinker just below and inside of middle, and Torkelson tops it to Volpe for an easy 6-4-3 DP, one out to go.
