FB above and outside middle, taken for a strike FB way outside, 1-1 Fouls off a slider hanging up and in. Swings at a curve low/away, tries to check, can't...and the first base ump says no swing on an OBVIOUS swing, well past home. 3-2 FB well outside, lifted to Soto in right, inning over.
Top 5, 4-1 Yanks. Cole with an 11 pitch 1-2-3, and is at 75 through 4 and maybe he starts the 5th. I dunno. Torres, Rice and Wells for the Yanks in the 5th.

Volpe takes a sinker inside, ball 1 FB into the zone up and away, taken, 2-0 Takes a splitter low near the corner away, 2-1 Maybe someone on the bench told him to stop chaisng everything Gausman throws. Takes a splitter diving down and in, 3-1 Beats him clean on a FB inside corner above the waist, big swing, looking for extra bases, and missed under. 3-2 FB inside corner waist high, Volpe with a more controlled swing spoils Volpe gets a FB just outside middle, and misses it clean for the K and a hat trick. 1 down. He’s the biggest problem on the team. I’ve never hated watching a player more.

Out West, the Dodgers are hot again. They've won 7 of 10, and at 52-32 are now 20 games over .500. The Padres are even hotter; after smashing the Sox for the 2nd straight day, they've won 5 in a row and 9 of 10. They've climbed to 5 games over and have opened some ground on the teams behind them. They still trail the Dodgers by 7 1/2. The Diamonbacks and Giants are both sluggish lately, both have lost 6 of their last 10. The D'backs are 3 under .500, the Giants are 4 under. The teams are 4 and 4 1/2 games behind Arizon and 11 1/2 and 12 games back of LA. The Rockies continue to sinker like a...well...umm...rock in water. They've lost 5 in a row, 8 of 10. At 28 games under .500, they're now the worst team in the NL. They're 12 behind SF, 12 1/2 back of Arizona, 16 1/2 back of SD, and 24 games out of 1st.
And that concludes The Sunday Standings™ for this week.

Can we please move on from Volpe or at least get him out of leadoff? Yes, please move on from complaing about Volpe.

None of those guys are going anywhere this season. Can two of them at least not bat leadoff and clean up? Is that too much to ask? As opposed to who? Move Soto and Judge up to be analytical and all you do is move the problems down in the order. Volpe is in a slump, maybe he needs a day off like Torres, but they're too banged up to permit it.

Torres takes a FB outside, a 2nd one in the zone low/away, and inside outs a low FB in the middle to right for a leadoff hit.

he can't hit, but Grisham is a heck of a cfer He does it smoothly, without showboating… This is why you can't just trade him. I wouldn't want anyone else out there for the last 3 outs of the World Series!

I know Rice is older, but his approach looks so much more developed than Volpe.
The book on Volpe is pretty simple. Just throw a few inches off the plate and he will go after it and like make soft contact.
Getting Volpe out of the leadoff spot will change a lot.

Rice... FB missed well outside at the knees, called a strike anyway. Terrible call, 3-4 inches outside on Gameday Takes a splitter low Takes another splitter low and just outside, 2-1 Fb up in the zone, fouled Splitter misses low near the corner inside, 3-2 Splitter misses low near the middle, ball 4. Another good patient at bat by Rice, 1st and 2nd, nobody out. Maybe Wells bunts?

FB near, middle and Wells is late and under again, fouls it off. Fb up in the zone, late and under again, pops to left, Varsho catches, 1 down. He didn't bunt, but now I wish they'd tried it.

We’re supposedly talking to the Cubs about Bellinger. I guess we’d say goodbye to either Rice or Davis…unless Rice is going to DH vs. RHP until Stanton returns…
