Butchered a routine groundball. And to add insult to Holmes' ERA, it was scored a base hit. The Volpe boot was scored fielder's choice, E-6. The double over Verdugo has to be scored a double, because it landed way behind him after two stumbles. |

I'm working today and was catching bits and pieces. Shut the van off and went into my building after the Riceball HR thinking we won the game. I'm tired of hearing how good Heartburn H0lmes is. Matt Blake and Holmes should be gone.

Can't blame that on Holmes. Yes, he put runners on, but he got the third out twice. Yep, a correct judgement by Verdugo and he should catch that, well, not easily, but without great difficultly. Because of the misread, he hurried to get back and stumbled twice, the 2nd stumble finishing what little chance he had to make a great catch. |

The initial misread turns that into about an 90% probability, the first stumble makes it 50-50, and the 2nd stumble ends all hope. |

This just isn't a real title contender. A real title contender makes the tough fight back from behind twice, and once Rice hits his enormous clutch shot, steps on the throat of their main competition. Holmes just simply doesn't get enough swings and misses to K enough guys and when good hitters make contact, bad things can happen. Title contendeers don't blow the 3rd out twice. Title contenders don't turn a leadoff single into bases loaded with 2 walks when they're trying to close things out. They seem certain to make the playoffs, but I don't know how far they'll get. As currently constructed, it won't be a ring.

As currently constructed, it won't be a ring. Pirates gave up on Holmes despite his good stuff because of command issues. We are starting to see that haunt him too much. Not only did he walk guys, but bottom of the order guys he should be going after. Feels like he pitches everybody like they are Mickey Mantle. |
