Verdugo hasn’t homered since June 14th and has four RBIs in that span. His on base and slugging has naturally plummeted. In other words has added nothing when they’ve really needed him the last month. Didn't he hit one against the Red Sox last week ? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

This just isn't a real title contender. A real title contender makes the tough fight back from behind twice, and once Rice hits his enormous clutch shot, steps on the throat of their main competition. Holmes just simply doesn't get enough swings and misses to K enough guys and when good hitters make contact, bad things can happen. Title contendeers don't blow the 3rd out twice. Title contenders don't turn a leadoff single into bases loaded with 2 walks when they're trying to close things out. They seem certain to make the playoffs, but I don't know how far they'll get. As currently constructed, it won't be a ring. Pirates gave up on Holmes despite his good stuff because of command issues. We are starting to see that haunt him too much. Not only did he walk guys, but bottom of the order guys he should be going after. Feels like he pitches everybody like they are Mickey Mantle. I will say it again, in my opinion, he's a much better pitcher when he's pitching in the 7th or 8th innings.

Yeah, and if the Rays pitching comes together as I think it might, with Cash managing, they'll be back in there for a Wild Card, too. But that could change in a month, lets see what happens with the trade deadline. 9 games is also A LOT to make up Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Can't blame it on him alone, but he played a big part if not the biggest part of the Yankees losing that game, despite him getting some favorable calls from the home plate umpire. Not an excuse for Volpe, but a relief pitcher who goes deep into counts and walks hitters doesn't help infielders. I agree, it's not an excuse.

A fan favorite here not long ago. Defensive lapses? Other than today...when? I think he's played pretty good D, the throw to 3rd today and the botched flyball isn't somthing we would expect to see from him but I just don't like his abs. Isn't as patient as he's been in the past and a lot of soft contact. Speaking strictly defensively, he's been outstanding...certainly a massive upgrade over what's been there in the past. As I said, fans here have been raving about his defense all year.

OK... Four days off for the break, the Rays come in for the dreaded 4-game wraparound series this Friday through next Monday.
Pitching matchups aren't set, but they look like this:
Game 1 Friday evening at 7:07 pm on YES: Gerrit Cole vs. Zack Eflin Game 2 Saturday afternon at 1:07, also on YES: Nestor Cortes vs. Shane Bax Game 3 Sunday afternoon at 1:37, also on YES: Marcus Stroman vs. Zach Littell Game 4 Monday evening at 7:07, again on YES: Carlos Rodon or Luis Gil vs. Taj Bradley (who's been light-out great his last 8 starts).
I'll be able to be more exact on rotations in the preview on Friday evening.
Now, I have a lot of notifications to check.

I just don't understand how a guy who stuggles with command would be better in the 8th than the 9th. Do you believe the command issues are the result of feeling more pressure in the 9th rather than mechanics?

CASHMAN: how about getting a TRUE CLOSER He came in with a two run lead against Boston, they tie the game then this loss to Baltimore. Despite the bad defense he just walks too many batters!!! As I mentioned a few days ago...in the "Enough already! Promote some reinforcements!" thread....The Yankees should promote Effross and Jack Neely. Let them pitch in the late innings and give them a chance to Close games.

OK... Four days off for the break, This is the worst! This should have been one of the best weekends of the season and great feel good way to go into the break. Instead we have to wait four days for another game.

I think Luke would even be better if he didn't have to pitch the 7th and 8th innings and could just focus on the 9th.

Holmes was not very good today. I won't miss him if he goes. But on Sunday, July 14 he was not the least competent player on the field when the game ended.
