I will say it again, in my opinion, he's a much better pitcher when he's pitching the 7th or 8th innings. Max, I haven't seen him pitch much in the 7th or 8th for us, has he? I just don't understand how a guy who stuggles with command would be better in the 8th than the 9th. Do you believe the command issues are the result of feeling more pressure in the 9th rather than mechanics? He did very well in set up for them in most of a season, following the trade where they picked him up, or they wouldn't have made him the closer in the first place. In 43 games of set-up from late July 2021, through mid-May 2022, his line is: 9-2, 2 saves, 46 1/3 innings, 30 hits, 9 runs, 6 earned, 2 HR, 6 BB, 52 K's, and a WHIP of 0.78. Now, that performance exaggerates what can be expected of him now, because Blake made some changes, and the league needed time to catch up to them, which they have. But I still think that with some load taken off him mentally with a good closer behind him, he'd be better than he's been in the stretches when he goes off the rails for weeks at a time. He might hate losing the job before he goes free agent, but they might have to do it for the good of the team.

Judge hit on the front shoulder by a fastball up and in. Intentional hit by pitch, Judge puts the bat down and goes to 1st, no further fuss. Missed it, did Umps give benches warnings? No. Everyone realized what it was, the necessary limited retaliation, and the Yanks smartly did not respond. Judge just recognized it for what it was, shrugged it off, not even a hard look at Kremer.

CASHMAN: how about getting a TRUE CLOSER He came in with a two run lead against Boston, they tie the game then this loss to Baltimore. Despite the bad defense he just walks too many batters!!! As I mentioned a few days ago...in the "Enough already! Promote some reinforcements!" thread....The Yankees should promote Effross and Jack Neely. Let them pitch in the late innings and give them a chance to Close games. It's a plan but I just don't think it is one we will follow. Effross has had a few opportunities to close games and he has struggled. I don't see him as a closer. I'm hoping he can be an effective setup man, that is where he has been good but considering all the time he has missed it's not a sure thing. Neely appears to have closer stuff, but I have a hard time believing we will put a young untested guy into the closer role during the stretch drive. I'd bring him up and give him some innings to see how his stuff works at the MLB level but I'd be shocked if he closes games. I think we still need a proven closer because I think Holmes is becoming a headcase. Cash will be making calls, it's simply a matter if the right deal is there. At this stage of the game plan B might be Weaver.

Boone probably gave him the green light to "try to get him going again". He's not really a HR guy, most he's hit in a season is 13. Probably go a little higher this yr Just wanted to get him a FB up in the zone to hit, and he got one and missed late and under.

Yes. Jeff Nelson is one analyst and I didn't catch which Orioles analyst is the 3rd man. Ben McDonald. Yes. Thanks. I heard his name mentioned later on ("Ben") and figured it out, but thanks all the same.

I can't say for sure, but in my opinion, it's the pressure.

The Gleyber moves in mysterious ways, his wonders to perform. I noticed he didn't run very hard in his first AB ground out. I missed that; thanks for pointing that out. Good thing for him his first half was so crappy he'll be nowhere near the All-Star festivities.

And that's it for Kremer, they'll bring Webb to face Verdugo. Only 83 pitches. Hyde was desperate and his moves worked...except for Kimbrel. Luckily for him, the Yanks have Holmes. And today, Volpe and Verdugo.

As opposed to... Torres? Volpe? Wells, the rookie? Cabrera? Grisham? Any one of them! The thing is: none of them are legit cleanup hitters, Put that pressure on them and they're all likely to fail in the job. But then, so is Verdugo.

It wasn't. The Mullins liner is a double, because Verdugo wound up nowhere near it. That's two blown saves and two losses charged to Holmes because of Volpe errors. I think maybe Volpe goes to 2nd after Torres leaves, assuming he can figure out what type of hitter he was meant to be, and starts using the right side of the field enough to keep the pitchers honest. Hopefully, Arias turns out to be the real deal at short, but he's not in the majors for at least two years. As for Peraza, he might unfortunately be destined to be the next Thairo Estrada; someone the Yanks give up on who becomes an effective player with another team in a lower pressure situation. I hope the Yanks don't just let him go and can get a decent player in return.

As I mentioned a few days ago...in the "Enough already! Promote some reinforcements!" thread....The Yankees should promote Effross and Jack Neely. Let them pitch in the late innings and give them a chance to Close games. Effross sounds pretty close Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Effross will definitely be in the pen when he's ready. Neely has only pitched half a dozen games at the AAA level and isn't on the 40 man, so I would imagine he's on the radar but he's a little blip on the corner of the radar. Neely would be rule 5 eligible after this season, so he has that going for him. I would think the Yankees would promote Gomez and see if his stuff plays up in short relief before you'd see Neely. The Yankees will be in a 40 man roster crunch soon. Effross can get his spot back by transferring Schmidt to the 60 day DL. Ian Hamilton will likely be back before 60 days, so they probably won't transfer him (60 days for him would be August 16). Theoretically, by the end of the month, you could have Effross and Hamilton back, which betters the bullpen without a move. If they both come back on August 1, here's your pen: Holmes Weaver Effross Hamilton Kahnle Hill Tonkin Ferguson/Cousins (Ferguson probably gets the nod because he uses the left hand, though Cousins has pitched better. Both would have to be DFA'd and pass waivers if they dropped them.) The big reason the Yankees are in the roster crunch they are is that they have 5 catchers, all of which have potential. Trevino, Wells, and Rice obviously have roster spots. Narvaez has hit better than expected at AAA and he's the best defensive catcher. Ramirez hasn't started hitting yet at AAA but there's no reason to believe he won't and he's too young to waive.

The Yankees standing pat and keeping Holmes as their Closer in my opinion makes no sense. Weeks ago I thought for a moment that Holmes' control issues were past him.

This just isn't a real title contender. A real title contender makes the tough fight back from behind twice, and once Rice hits his enormous clutch shot, steps on the throat of their main competition. Holmes just simply doesn't get enough swings and misses to K enough guys and when good hitters make contact, bad things can happen. Title contendeers don't blow the 3rd out twice. Title contenders don't turn a leadoff single into bases loaded with 2 walks when they're trying to close things out. They seem certain to make the playoffs, but I don't know how far they'll get. As currently constructed, it won't be a ring. Pirates gave up on Holmes despite his good stuff because of command issues. We are starting to see that haunt him too much. Not only did he walk guys, but bottom of the order guys he should be going after. Feels like he pitches everybody like they are Mickey Mantle. Maybe there is some of that, yes. Maybe he's afraid of getting beaten in the zone, whether it's on a blast or a bleeder (can in point, today: Volpe and Verdugo). But a prerequistie for an effective closer is the mental toughness to challenge hitters with your best stuff, and if he can't find that amidst frequently losing his slot and command, then he can't remain the closer much longer.

OK... Four days off for the break, This is the worst! This should have been one of the best weekends of the season and great feel good way to go into the break. Instead we have to wait four days for another game. Yeah...sucks, doesn't it? Well, as a famous former announder liked to say, "That's baseball, Suzyn."
