Gil has really turned it around after a disastrous month or so. Terrific work limiting the damage there.

Martinez decides to not spot Gil a strike, goes after a 1st pitch slider just below and inside middle, and he JUST misses it, gets under it to right, dies a couple of steps from the track in the corner, Soto drifts back, then toward the line, catches, inning over. Great job by Gil holding things together, and keeping the game from getting away from him, but he got a bit lucky...the Mets missed some crushable sliders there. Well, he got unlucky on the 1st two hits, so it evened out.
Bottom 5, 1-1. 23 pitches in the 5th, and that's probably it for Gil, 91 pitches total. Jones, Soto and Judge for the Yanks in their half of the 5th.

Now the question is - can we get another run with this diarrhea cocktail of a lineup?

Jones flails wildly at a change way low, 0-1 FB at the top, fouled off, 0-2 Takes his timeout, as if that matters. Change way outside, even Jones can take that one, 1-2 Takes the change that almost bounced, 2-2 Perfectly throw big breaking curve to the low outside corner, Jones pulls off it for the K, 1 down.

The Jamai Jones experiment has started a little slow.

Soto... Takes a slurve well outside, 0-1 Takes a well spotted sinker below the waist outside corner, with 2 strikes Sot slaps/alams that to left center, but on 1-0, he takes it for a strike, hoping for something better later in the count. Takes a slurve way low and away, 2-1 Curve waist high, outside corner, lined off the end of the bat, not hard, and right to Alfonso, 2 down.

Judge... FB taken high, inner half, 1-0 FB high, outside corner 2-0 Change outside 3-0 FB fired well high, inner half, ball 4. As intentional an unintentional walk ever gets for Judge.

The Jamai Jones experiment has started a little slow. "Abby something or other...Abby normal."

The Jamai Jones experiment has started a little slow. He'd have a better chance with a sand wedge.

Davis... FB way high, ball 1 Pitch clock violation makes it 2-0 Takes a curve on the back door, 2-0 Swings over yet again on another curve dropping way low again. And he's lucky he left yet another curve down an in just below the corner inside, because that allows him to get a piece for a spoil, still 2-2 Hey!!! He laid off one!! Another curve almost bounced over the middle of the plate, 3-2 Quick throw over on Judge, but Judge gets back in plenty of time.

Davis and Jones just take up space... Give it to an upcoming prospect. How can it be worse..

Now the question is - can we get another run with this diarrhea cocktail of a lineup? Is that made with bitters? I'm sure you recall the trendy 90s cocktail the Cosmopolitan. Vodka, Cointreau, cranberry juice and lime juice. There is a variant called the Constipolitan which substitutes prune juice for cranberry juice.

Big slow curve winds up above the knees near middle, and all Davis can do is foul tip it into the mitt for a K to end the inning.
Top 6, tied at 1.
Tonkin was warming, and I assume he'll be coming in to face Alonso, Vientos and McNeil for the Mets in the 6th.

Apparently, Davis can't hit a curveball.
