Javier Assad pitches the 2nd game of the series against the Yanks. Signed as an 18-year-old free agent from Mexico in 2015, the Cubs had him pitch 10 games (7 starts) at rookie ball in 2016, where he pitched well. The kept him in instructional camp to start 2017, then sent him to summer-A ball in June, where he was so-so in 13 starts. He spent all of 2018 in low-A, where he was again mediocre. He spent all of 2019 in high-A and he did decently, going 4-10 in 23 starts, but with a 3.87 ERA. As with all other prospects, 2020 was spent in developmental camp due to COVID. He started 2021 a bit late, not pitching until May but still made 21 starts at AA pitching poorly, ending the season with a 5.32 ERA. He finally broke through as a prospect in 2022, pitching 14 excellent starts in AA, then 7 more in AAA, before the Cubs called him to the majors for the first time in late August. He made 8 more good starts and 1 relief appearance before the season ended. Despite the strong showing, he couldn't find consistency in the big leagues for the 1st half of last season, as he was bounced back and forth between AAA and the majors for first eight weeks of the season.
Finally, the Cubs called him up for good in late May, and stuck him in the bullpen. He made 14 excellent appearances, mostly in middle/long relief, covering 32+ innings with an ERA of 2.23. The Cubs had an opening in their rotation and made him a starter again in early August, where he made nine mostly good starts. Then sent him back to the bullpen late in the year, and he pitched 4 more good games in middle relief/long relief. He ended the season, 5-3 with a 3.09 ERA in 109 1/3 innings. This year, he started in the Cubs' rotation and it stuck. In 25 starts, he's 7-4 with an ERA of 3.21. In 126 innings, he's allowed 118 hits, 47 runs, 45 earned, 16 HR and a rather high 53 walks, while striking out 106. That high walk has given him a subpar ratio at 1.367.
This Assad's 2nd career appearance against the Yanks and his first start. His only other appearance against them was a 3-inning mop-up relief appearance at the Stadium on July 8th last year. The Yanks knocked out Drew Smyly after 4 innings, and Gerrit Cole got to 9-2 with 7 1/3 innings of 3-run ball. Assad pitched the last three innings that day, giving up just a walk to Gleyber Torres and striking out 2. It's silly, but here's his line vs. the Yanks 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 3 innings, no hits, no runs, 0 HR, 1 BB and 2 K. His WHIP against the Yanks is 0.333 and the teams quadruple slash line against Assad, in 10 PA is .000/.100/.000/.100.

Playing the Name Game: There have been 12 players with first name Javier in MLB history. The best hitting Javier title looked just 2-3 years ago as if it was Javier Baez' for the taking, but his career has plummeted in his 30's and he still hasn't caught up to catcher Javier 'Javy' Lopez, who spent his career mostly at catcher, mostly for the Braves. He was the starting catcher on those excellent Maddux-Glavine-Smoltz Braves, who only won it all once, in 1995. Lopez made the All-Star team 3 times, got down-ballot MVP votes in two seasons, and won one Sliver Slugger. He retired with over 1500 hits, 250 HR and 850 RBI, with a lifetime BAVG of .282 and lifetime SLG of .491. His career season was 2002, when he hit .328 with 43 HR and 109 RBI, slugged .687 and still finished just 5th in the NL MVP voting, behind Bonds, Pujols, Sheffield and Thome.
Of the pitching Javiers, by far the best is shockingly Javier Vazquez, who had at least one good season for every team he pitched for...except the Yanks, for whom he collapsed in the 2nd half in 2004, and was awful for all of 2010. Yankee fans remember him worst as the bum who gave up the grand slam to Johnny Damon in the 2nd inning of game 7 of the ALCS in relief of Kevin Brown, starting the rout that completed the only 3-0 collapse in the history of the MLB playoffs. It's hard for Yankees fans to remember that Vazquez had three different 6+WAR seasons, including 2009, the year he went 15-10 with a 2.87 ERA for the Braves, finishing 4th in the Cy Young voting, because that off season, Cashman repeated the blunder of trading for Vazquez, and he went 10-10 with 5.32 ERA for the defending champ Yanks that lost to the Rangers in the ALCS. So poorly did Vazquez pitch for the Yanks in 2010 that he wasn't even on the post-season roster.
The two players with last name Javier are father and son Julian Javier and Stan Javier. Julian's career has more high moments, he won a total of 4 pennants with the Cards and Reds, and has two World Series Champion rings for 1964 and 1967 with the Cards, and famously broke up Jim Lonborg's no-hit bid in the 8th inning of Game 2 of the World Series with a two-out double. He also made two All-Star teams. His son Stan was an outfielder, winning pennants with the A's in 1988 and 1989 and a ring the 2nd year. Stan never won any personal honors, but his career was five years longer, and he piled up almost twice as many bWAR as his father.
Javier Assad is the only Assad in big league history.

The Yanks are bringing Clarke Schmidt off the IL to square off against Assad. Schmidt was in the midst of a breakout season before injuring his a lat muscle. Finally healthy and rehabbed after more than 3 months out of the rotation, he returns with a record of 5-3 and an ERA of 2.83 in 11 starts. In 60 2/3 innings, he's allowed 49 hits, 19 runs, 17 earned, 6 HR, 20 BB and struck out 67. His WHIP is an excellent 1.137. This is Schmidt's 3rd career game against the Cubs and 1st start. In the two relief games, he's pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing just one intentional walk and striking out 1. As with Assad, the record is ludicrously tiny, but his ERA against the Cubs in 0.00, and the WHIP is 0.375. The Cubs' team quadruple slash line against Schmidt is .000/.143/.000/.143. Also as with Assad, his last game against the Cubs was a mop-up 2/3 of an inning last July at the Stadium in a game the Yanks lost 7-4. He got his 1 K vs. the Cubs in that game.

Yesterday: the Yanks got great pitching from Luis Gil and three relievers, who combined for a one-hit shutout with the wind blowing in. The four Yankee pitchers walked 4, but struck out 13 Cubs. They got all their offense in the 3rd, when Judge hit a double with 1st and 2nd and nobody out, scoring Torres, and Wells immediately followed with a two-run single scoring Soto and Judge. That was enough. Gil came back off the IL and was terrific, going 6 innings, allowing just the one hit, 2 walks and striking out 7. Jake Cousins walked one and struck out two in the 7th for his zero; Kahnle had a 1-2-3 8th, also striking out 2. Jeff Weaver needed multiple favorable calls from home plate ump Jordan Baker and still walked Cody Bellinger with 2 down, but after an 11-pitch battle, Weaver got Isaac Paredes to hit a sharp grounder ot the left of 2nd that Torres made an outstanding backhand stop and throw on the move for the final out. Gil got the win, improving to 13-6 on the year. Jordan Wicks gave up the 3 runs and took the loss, dropping to 2-3. Weaver was shaky but still earned the first save of his career.
At Camden Yards, Dean Kremer threw 6 innings of 2-hit shutout ball, striking out 7, and the Orioles got a sac fly from Holliday in the 5th and a solo HR from Henderson in the 6th, and that was the story of the game, the O's beating the Rays, 2-0. Kremer got the win, improving to 7-9 on the season; Shane Baz was the hard-luck loser, giving up 2 runs (just 1 earned) and just 2 hits in 6 innings, and dropped to 2-3. Seranthony Dominguez got the last 4 outs to earn his 9th save with the O's and 10th of the season.
At Fenway, Ceddanne Rafaela broke up a 1-1 tie in the 7th with a 2-run HR, his 15th of the season, and the Red Sox' pen made it stand up for 3-1 win over the lowly White Sox. Nick Pivetta gave up just 1 run in 6 innings, but left before Boston took the lead. Zach Kelly got the win with a scoreless 7th, improving to 6-2 on the year. Matt Foster gave up the HR and took the loss; he's now 0-1 on the season. Josh Winckowski pitched a 1-2-3 9th for his first save this season. The loss snapped the White Sox' 1-game winning streak. They've lost 13 of their last 14, and 43 of their last 48; it was their 110th loss of the season with 20 games left on the schedule. They're on pace to go 37-125 and at .225, they're "ahead" of the 1916 A's, who finished at .235, the worst winning percentage since 1900.
The Braves got 3 in the 2nd on two RBI singles and a run-scoring groundout, and the pitching made that stand, giving up just a RBI grounder to Guerrero in the 3rd, the Braves winning the first game of their series in Atlanta, 3-1 over the Jays. Kevin Gausman gave up the 3 runs in 6 innings and took the loss, dropping to 12-11 on the year. Max Fried gave up just the unearned run, 5 hits and a BB, striking out 8 in 7 innings for the win, improving to 9-8. Raisel Iglesias made it interesting in the 9th. After striking out the first two hitters, he gave up a double and single to put runners at the corners, but whiffed George Springer to end it for his 31st save.
Coming into the games today, the Yanks remain 1/2 game behind the O's for first, still holding to top Wild Card slot. The Red Sox are in 3rd, 10 games behind the Yanks and 10 1/2 out of 1st. The Rays are two games behind Boston, 12 behind the Yanks and 12 1/2 out of 1st. The Jays dropped to 14 1/2 back of the Yanks and 15 behind the O's.

In other East games today/tonight: All 5 East teams are playing the middle games of their respective series...At Camden Yards, Ryan Pepiot (7-6, 3.76 ERA) starts for Tampa; he's pitched poorly in his last two starts after 3 good one before those. Zack Eflin (10-7, 3.60 ERA) has been brilliant since coming to Baltimore from the Tampa at the deadline. He's the best deadline starter pickup, winning all five of his starts with the O's with a 1.95 ERA, striking out 34 and walking just 3 in 32 1/3 innings. At Fenway Park, Garrett Crochet (5-4, 4.18 ERA) starts for Chicago. The White Sox are protecting the former reliever's arm; they haven't let him throw more than 70 pitches or pitch more than 4 innings in his last 5 starts, even when pitching very well. Cooper Criswell (5-4, 4.14 ERA) has similar limits; the Sox haven't let him throw more than 80 pitches or 4 2/3 innings in his last 3 starts. At Truist Park in Atlanta, the Jays start Jose Berrios (14-9, 3.59 ERA); his last 5 starts have been as outstanding as his first 13 starts. One wonders what happened in the 10 starts in between, where he was 4-5 with a 6.43 ERA. Spencer Schwellenbach (5-6, 3.69 ERA) goes for the Braves. he's 2-1 with a 2.57 ERA in his last 7 starts. And at 2:20 pm, it's Schmidt vs. Assad at Wrigley.

Wind blowing in from LF again today, 15-20 mph. Partly Cloudy, low 60's for the temperature. It's windy all over Chicagoland today, and very cool temps this morning, while I was on my long run. Running against the wind sucks, by the way.
