Pretty sweet lineup:
Jasson in LF, Judge in CF, Verdugo sits. Boone said when both Martian and Judge are in the OF, Judge will play CF and Dominguez LF:

Very good lineup. I thought maybe Judge was going to DH again since Verdugo went 2-4.

Very good lineup. I thought maybe Judge was going to DH again since Verdugo went 2-4. I agree. Seemed to me Verdugo was startup hit well. Maybe some rest. He is a better fielder than Dominguez.

Could be the beginning the platooning of Verdugo and Stanton. That's probably not what's happening, but it's an analytical response if they truly intend to play Dominguez every day.
It works for Verdugo, this year anyway: vs. R: .241/.288/.395/.682 vs. L: .228/.315/.285/.600
Not so much for Stanton who has an extreme outlier reverse platoon split this season, at least power-wise: vs. R: .236/.298/.525/.823 vs L: .232/.287/.384/.671
And in looking at the numbers for just the two of them, we see where a substantial part of the Yankees' team problems vs. lefties it coming from: Verdugo and Stanton aren't hitting them.

The Royals send ex-Met and Padre Seth Lugo out to start the middle game against the Yanks. Lugo pitched against the Yanks in the series in KC in the game that Rodon won against the Royals, so his career doesn't have to be reviewed today. He dominated the league in the first half and was leading in both pitcher bWAR and ERA for a long time. He was the leading Cy Young Candidate until the 2nd week in July, when he went into an 8-start slump in which he was 3-5 with an ERA of 5.53, and allowing both his teammate Cole Ragans and the Tigers' Tarik Skubal to pull even or ahead of him in the Cy Young chase. He's since come back with back-to-back outstanding starts, both 1 run in 7 innings against two very good teams: the Astros and the Guardians. Lugo is still have an outstanding season worthy of at least a top 5 Cy Young finish, maybe better. In 29 starts, he's 15-8 with a 3.05 ERA. In 186 innings, he's allowed 162 hits, 69 runs, 63 earned, 15 HR, and 45 BB, striking out 159. His WHIP for the season is an excellent 1.113. Lugo is high up multiple pitching leader lists: 3rd in the AL in bWAR, 4th in ERA, tied for 2nd in wins, 6th in won/loss percentage, 10th in WHIP, 9th lowest in BB per 9 innings, 1st in innings pitched, tied for the lead in games started, 4th in lowest HR per 9. He's also allowed the 3rd most hits in the league, but still 10th in WHIP in spite of that.
Lugo has made 3 starts against the Yankees before, and 10 relief appearances as well. He's 4-2 against them with an ERA of 3.18. In 28 1/3 innings, he's allowed 22 hits, 10 runs (earned) 2 HR, 9 BB and struck out 35. His WHIP against them is 1.094, and the Yanks team quadruple slash line against Lugo is .218/.292/.287/.579. His last start against the Yanks came in the series 3 months ago in KC. Lugo made it through 7 innings but gave up 8 hits, 4 runs (earned), 1 BB and struck out 4. He also hit 2 batters for good measure. The Royals rallied back to 4-2, but Tonkin came in for the 9th for his 1st save in a 4-2 Yankee win.
Repertoire: Lugo is an extreme "kitchen sink" righty. He throws 9 different pitches: 4-seamer, sinker, cutter, sweeper, slider, curve, slurve, change and splitter, and he's thrown each of them between 82 and 685 times this season. The 4-seam has average rise and below average run. The sinker gets average tail and below average drop. the cutter gets above average drop but almost no horizontal break at all, it almost behave like a poor man's splitter. The sweeper has a bit below average drop and break. The slider is much the same as the sweeper, below average drop and break. The curve has among the most drop of any curve in MLB, and way above average break as well. The slider is a bit better than average in both of those planes. The change has average drop and tail. The splitter has below average drop and above average tail. In run values, the curve and slurve are both substantial pluses, the slider and cutter are medium pluses, the four-seam, sinker and change are modest pluses, the splitter is a tiny pluss and the only minus pitch is the sweeper, and a fairly big minus per pitch it is. His FB velocity is well below average, but the spin rate is well above average. The curve spin rate is the best in MLB; 100th percentile. His extension is below average and his chase rate is average. His average exit velocity is slightly below average, the barrel rate is slightly above average, and the Hard hit rate is about average. The line drive rate is average, the groundball rate is a bit above average and the flyball and popup rates area bit below average. The swinging strike rate is below average, the called strike rate is above average, and the CSW is more or less average. In luck factors, the BABIP and strand rates are MLB average, the HR/FB rate is about 1/2 the MLB average, the 3rd best among 58 qualified starters. That extreme low HR rate knocks about 2/3 of a run off his ERA; his ERA estimators think his ERA should be about 3.70 instead of 3.05.

Playing the Name Game: We had Seth Lugo earlier this seasons, so...There have been 17 other Seths in MLB history; comes from the Bible, the 3rd son of Adam and Eve. Has become a lot more popular in recent years. Only 3 of the other Seths began their MLB careers before 2000. Lugo is far and away the best "Seth" pitcher, and of the other 17 Seths, the only one with a significant career and by far the best hitter is Seth Smith, and outfielder who has 12 seasons in MLB for the Rockies, Padres Mariners and Orioles, lasting long enough get almost 1000 hits and over 100 HR in the majors.
There are 4 other Lugos in MLB history, but the only one with a significant career was Julio Lugo, who played mostly shortstop across 12 MLB seasons for 7 different teams from 2000 to 2011. From 2003 through 2006, he averaged about 3.5 bWAR a season, hit .281, with 40 HR and nearly 100 steals in the four seasons combined, averaging about 75 runs and 55 RBI for the four seasons. He was basically an average major leaguer as both a hitter and a defender in those seasons. The next year, his play slipped but he was the little-remembered starting shortstop on the 2007 World Series winning Red Sox. That Sox team had good-to-outstanding players everywhere except at short with Lugo and in center with Coco Crisp, so the rest of the offense was able to carry them to a ring.

Marcus Stroman starts for the Yanks. Marcus is your basic #4-#5 starter at this point of his career, trying to get by on toughness and guile, because the stuff can't carry him anymore; it simply isn't good enough. So far this year in 27 starts, Stroman is 10-7 with an ERA of 4.03. He got hammered by the Rangers in his last start, breaking a string of 4 solid starts in a row. In any given game he can give the Yanks 5 to 7 solid innings, or get wiped out before making it through the order a third time. He has a wide assortment of junk that he tries to get hitters to chase. Of 58 qualified starters in MLB right now, Stroman has the 3rd lowest swinging strike rate, and the 4th lowest CSW, the 5th highest WHIP, the 10th highest H/9 innings, the 2nd highest BB/9 and the 4th lowest K/BB ratio. He does what he can more often than not, but there are nights he just can't. In 27 starts, he's pitched 143 innings, allowing 145 hits, 71 runs, 64 earned, 18 HR, and 58 BB with 105 K's. His WHIP for the season is a very poor 1.420.
Stroman is making his 7th start against the Royals, and he's pitched very well in the 1st six:, 4-1 with a 2.52 ERA. In 35 2/3 innings, he's allowed 27 hits, 10 runs (earned), 3 HR and 10 BB with 26 K's. His WHIP against KC is an outstanding 1.037, and the Royal team quadruple slash line against him is .208/.262/.346/.609. He pitched against the Royals in KC on June 11th, and while he struck out just 1, he pitched 4 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, allowing 4 hits and 3 BB, and got the win in the game in which the Yanks beat up Brady Singer, 10-1.

Yesterday: the Yanks and Royals played see-saw through the first six innings. The Royals got an unearned run in the first after Pham reached on a Chisholm throwing error leading off, and pushed the lead to 2-0 on a solo HR by Perez in the 3rd. The Yanks struck back for 3 in the 4th on when Dominguez made a risky steal of 3rd with 2 outs and scored on a throwing error by Perez, and Verdugo immediately followed up with a 2-run HR. The Royals tied it in the 5th on a RBI single by Perez, and took the lead 4-3 in the 6th on a solo HR by Renfroe, but the Yanks rallied again for four in the 7th as Judge tied the game on a single through the left side, and Wells following with a crushing 3-run blast to the bleachers in right. After Weaver escaped a two-out two-on jam of his own making by whiffing Garcia to end the 8th, the Yanks put it away with 3 more runs on a RBI single by Torres, a DP grounder by Judge and RBI double by Wells again, this time to left center, and won going away 10-4. Carlos Rodon pitched solidly but left trailing, and Jake Cousins put up a 0 in the 7th to be the beneficiary of the 4-run rally, getting the win to go to 2-1 on the year. James McArthur faced just 4 batters, but gave up 3 hits, a BB and the Wells' HR for all four of the runs in the 7th and took the loss, falling to 5-7. The win was the Yanks' 3rd in 4 games and pushed them back to 22 games over .500 at 83-61.
At Citizen's Bank Ballpark, the Rays and Phils played the first game of their 3-game series and the pitching was outstanding on both sides. The Phils held a 1-0 lead into the 9th on a solo HR by Kyle Schwarber in the 6th, but closer Carlos Estevez blew the save on a leadoff HR by Brandon Lowe, then got himself a vultured win when Kody Clemens hit a walkoff single with the bases loaded and two outs off of reliever Garrett Cleavinger. Estevez is now 4-4 on the season; Cleavinger is now 7-4.
At Rogers Centre, the Mets and Jays also opened a 3-game series and both teams also got outstanding pitching. The game was 1-0 Mets through 6 innings on an RBI single by J.D. Martinez in the 4th, but the Jays took the lead in the 7th on a HBP and a sac fly, both with bases loaded. The Mets got the two back in the 8th on an even more strange sequence: a bases loaded wild pitch followed, after the hitter struck out, a passed ball with 1st and 3rd to score the 2nd run. The game remained 3-2 to the 9th when Mets' closer Diaz got the first two outs and gave up a single to put the winning run at the plate, but Leo Jimenez' deep fly to right died a step from the wall to be caught by Marte to seal the victory for his 17th save. Normally, for blowing the lead but getting the last two outs in the 7th, Jose Bhutto should've been the pitcher of record and got the win, but the scorer judged his appearance "brief and ineffective" (single to load the bases, hit batter to force in a run, sac fly to score the go-ahead run, strikeout) and gave the win instead to Ryne Stanek, who struck out the side in the 8th. Stanek is now 7-3 on the season. Tommy Nance, who pitched the 8th for the Jays, took the L for his 1st decision this season. The Mets have won 10 of their last 11 games.
At Fenway, the O's and Red Sox played the first game of their series, and though the O's struck first on a RBI single by Santander, but the Sox answered in the bottom on RBI grounder by O'Neill, then took a 4-1 lead in the 4th on back to back HRs by Refsnyder and O'Neill, with the first one coming with Devers on base. The O's got one back in the 4th on a bases loaded walk to Santander, but the Sox blew it open with 4 in the 6th, 2 in the 7th and 2 more in the 8th, which included a 2nd pair of back-to-backers by Refsnyder and O'Neill, and routed the O's 12-3. Cade Povich had another poor start, giving up the first 4 runs in 4 2/3 and taking the loss, dropping to 2-8 for the year. Bryan Bello wasn't great, 2 runs in 5 1/3 with 5 K but also 5 BB, but it was good enough to raise his record to 13-7 on the season. After losing 10 of 13, the Sox have won 3 of 4 and suddenly O'Neill is on fire; guess who the Yanks play next series? The O's have now lost 3 in a row.
Coming into the games today, the Yanks now lead the O's by 1 1/2, the Sox by 10, the Rays by 12 and the Jays by 14 1/2. Their magic number for a playoff spot is down to 9, and to clinch the division title is down to 17 with 18 games left to play.

In other East games today: at 6:40 pm at Citizens' Bank Park, the Rays and Phils play the middle game of their 3-game series. Taj Bradley (6-10, 4.40 ERA) starts for Tampa; he's now thrown 7 terrible starts in a row, going 0-6 with an ERA near 9.00 after 9 brilliant starts in a row before that. Ranger Suarez (12-6, 2.90 ERA) starts for Philadelphia; he was 10-2 with a 1.83 ERA and a leading candidate for the Cy Young Award before stumbling for 7 starts, going 1-5 with an ERA of 6.25. In his most recent start, he shut out the Marlins over 5 innings for the win.
At 7:07 pm in Citifield, the Jays play the middle game of their series against the Mets. Bowden Francis (8-4, 3.72 ERA) starts for Toronto, the Phils got 3 runs in 6 innings of him in his last start, giving him a loss, and that was more runs that he allowed in the 4 brilliant starts before that Phillies start. David Peterson (9-1, 2.75 ER) throws for the Mets; he's 4-0 in his last 7 starts with an ERA of 1.81.
In Fenway at 7:10 pm, the Orioles play the middle game of their 3-game set against the Red Sox. Albert Suarez (7-5, 3.49 ERA) goes for Baltimore; he got hammered for 6 runs in 4 1/3 innings by the White Sox in his last start after pitching 4 outstanding games in a row just before it. Kutter Crawford (8-13, 4.46 ERA) starts for Boston; he leads all of MLB in HR allowed with 29, and he's lost three tough-luck starts in row, 2 runs in 5 innings vs. the D'backs, 2 runs in 6 2/3 innings against the Jays, and 2 runs in 6 innings against the Mets, with no wins to show for them.
And at 7:07 pm at the Stadium, it's Lugo vs. Stroman. See you in about 40 minutes for the game.
