The Sox start Tanner Houck in game 2, looking to even the series. Houck started twice against the Yanks in July, so no career recap required. Since the 2nd start vs. New York, Houck has gone 0-3 in 7 starts with an ERA of 4.65, and the team has lost 6 of the 7 games. On the season as a whole, Houck is 8-10 with an ERA of 3.24. in 169 2/3 innings, he's allowed 151 hits, 74 runs, of which only 61 have been earned (he's been a key victim of the Sox' MLB leading total of 88 unearned runs), just 11 HR, 47 BB and strike out 150. His WHIP on the season is a superior 1.167. He's on several top 10 leader boards: 8th in ERA, 9th in innings pitched, lowest HR allowed per 9 innings in the league and two oddities: he leads the AL in Hit Batsmen, and putouts by a pitcher. Against the Yankees, Houck had made 9 starts and 5 relief appearances. He's pitched 53 innings, and allowed 36, 20 runs, 14 earned, 2 HR, 30 BB and struck out 43. His WHIP against New York is 1.245, and the Yanks' team quadruple slash line against him is .193/.318/.267/.586.
Repertoire: Houck is a 4-pitch righty: sweeper, sinker, splitter and a rarely-used cutter. The sweeper has above average drop and break into lefties. The sinker has exceptional drop (4th most drop among 282 MLB pitchers who throw a sinker) and average tail in on righties. The splitter has elite drop (4th most drop among 65 MLB pitchers who throw one and above average tail away from lefties. The cutter has well below average drop and break into lefties. In run values, the sweeper is a good-sized plus, and so is the splitter. The Sinker is a tiny plus, and the cutter is a fairly hefty minus. The FB velocity is slightly below average and the spin is below average, which helps the sinker drop more. His extension is well below average, and his chase rate is above average. His average exit velocity is right about MLB average, the barrel rate is below average (or else he wouldn't allow so few HRs) and the hard hit rate is somewhat above average. The line drive rate is average, the ground ball rate is well above average, the flyball rate is way below average, as is the popup rate; it's very hard to lift the ball on Houck. The swinging strike rate is below average but the called strike rate is well above average, so the CSW is well above average too, 10th best among 60 qualified MLB starters this season. As for luck factors, the BABIP is just a bit above MLB average, the strand rate is below average, but the HR/FB rate is well below average, so his ERA estimators think his ERA should be just over 4.00. Remember, his ERA is also artificially a bit lowered by the high number of unearned runs he's allowed.
We've hit his name twice, so some of this Name Game is a re-hash: 11 MLB players with 1st name Tanner; maybe Tanner Bibee will winding up fighting Houck for the title of Best Tanner. Right now, though, Tanner Houck, who pitched most of his games for the Nationals, is the best Tanner in MLB history. He had outstanding seasons for Washington in 2014 when he went 15-10 with a 2.85 ERA, and again 2 years later going 16-10 with a 2.83 ERA, finishing 10th in the NL Cy Young Voting. He has the most bWAR of any Tanner so far, with just over 18. And yes, he will go down in Tanner lore for being part of the the only all-Tanner trade, having bent sent to the Reds in December, 2018 for reliever Tanner Rainey. There are only 2 players with last name Tanner: Chuck who went on to much greater fame as a manager and his son Bruce. Chuck is much more famous for managing for 19 seasons in the majors for four different teams, winning a title as the manager of the 1979 "We Are Family" Pirates. Currently, the wonderfully named 19th century shortstop and outfielder Sadie Houck was barely ahead of Tanner in career bWAR the last time the Yanks faced him but Tanner has passed him by, and will be moving way on ahead, if he can stay healthy.
As for "Houk"s, there's just Ralph Houk, 3rd string catcher to Yogi Berra, and mostly Charlie Silvera on the dynasty Yankees from 1947 through 1954, playing a total of 91 games and getting just 171 plate appearances in 8 seasons. Ralph was most famous as the manager and general manager of the Yankees through 3 different eras. He won three pennants and two titles with the Yankees from 1961 through 1963 in the Topping/Webb era, and got kicked upstairs to general manager in 1964. After Yogi Berra was fired and the Johnny Keane hiring failed, he booted himself back downstairs and resumed managing in the era of the CBS Ownership of the team. He was still there when a group of investors led by then-team president Mike Burke and George Steinbrenner bought the Yankees in January, 1973. Houk managed one final year, the final season in the original Yankee Stadium, and as had been the case the previous 7 seasons, led the team nowhere near 1st place. It was said at the time that the constant interference in running the club by The Boss led Houck to quit with two years left on his contract, but Houk in fact told Daily News sportswriter Bill Madden years later that the constant booing from the fans in that era that caused him to leave. He went on to manage the Tigers through a rebuilding period and by the time he was retired after the 1978 season, the core of the 1984 title team: Lou Whitaker, Alan Trammell and Jack Morris, had made their debuts under Houck. Two years later, Houck ended his retirement when the Red Sox fired manager Don Zimmer, who had been manager for the infamous collapse of the 1978 Sox. They hired Houck, and he spent five years during another rebuilding, but by the time he left, the core of the 1986 AL Pennant winning Red Sox had established themselves in the majors under Houck: Roger Clemens, Wade Boggs, Rich Gedman, Bruce Hurst, Oil Can Boyd. Yet again, he had led a team for five seasons without getting anywhere near first place, except when the Sox finished 2nd, 1 1/2 games back of the Brewers, in the 2nd half of the strike-split season of 1981. The 1984 Sox was the last season he managed; he finally retired before the 1985 season.

Clarke Schmidt makes his 2nd start since returning after nearly three months on the IL with a lat strain. In his first start 6 days ago against the Cubs, he managed to throw 4 2/3 shutout innings against the Cubs. Before he got hurt, he was having a sort of a breakout year; he was top ten in the AL in ERA, and looked to all the world like an up-and-coming #3 starter. On the season Schmidt is 5-3 in 12 starts with a 2.34 ERA. In 65 1/3 innings, he's allowed 53 hits, 19 runs, 17 earned, 6 HR, and 21 BB with 69 K's. His WHIP on the season is an excellent 1.133. Tonight is the 5th start of his career vs. Boston, along with 4 relief appearances. He's 0-1 against them with a 4.23 EERA. In 27 2/3 innings, he's allowed 24 hits, 14 runs, 13 earned, 6 HR and 9 BB, and has struck out 23. His WHIP against the Sox is a solid 1.193. His last start against them was the 2nd game of a doubleheader in Fenway in September of last year. He lasted 5 1/3 innings, allowing 7 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned, 1 HR and 3 BB with 3 K in a no-decision, leaving with a 5-4 lead. The bullpen blew the lead, but the Yanks went on to win, 8-5.

Last night, the Yanks and Sox had a pitcher's duel. Gleyber Torres hit a HR leading off the game for the Yanks in the 1st, Jansen answered for Boston with a solo HR of his own in the top of the 5th, and the game stayed that way until the 10th, when with Berti pinch-running for the ghost-runner for the 2nd straight night, he came around to score the winning run on a single to left center, this one by Juan Soto, and the Yanks had a 2-1 victory. Clay Holmes got the win in relief by getting the last two batters in the top of the 10th, stranding the Sox' ghost-runner on 2nd. Holmes is now 3-5 on the season. Josh Winckowski gave up the single to Soto for the loss, dropping to 4-2.
The only other game in the East last night was the Rays going to Cleveland to play the Guardian and beating them, 5-2. Tampa got a run in the 1st on a solo HR by Brandon Lowe, but the Guardians got the run back in the bottom of the inning on RBI double by Thomas, and took the lead in the 3rd on a RBI single gy Andres Giminez. The Rays regained the lead for good in the 4th on a sac fly by Jonathan Aranda, followed by a RBI single by Johnny DeLuca. The Rays added a tack-on run in the 8th on a RBI single by Jose Caballero and another in the 9th on a sac fly by Logan Driscoll., and went on to win 5-2. Ryan Pepiot was pulled from the game after 2 innings, but apparently not because he was struggling, having given up 4 hits and 2 runs to that point. Long reliever/Opener Cole Sulser came in and three 3 scoreless innings, getting his first win of the season. Gavin Williams gave up the first 3 runs for the Guardians and takes the loss, dropping to 3-9 on the year. Richard Lovelady pitched a 1-2-3 9th for his 2nd save of the season.
The Orioles and Jays had the night off.
Coming into the games tonight, the Yanks' lead in the East was up to 2 full games. The Sox dropped to 11 games back, the Rays stayed 13 back and the Jays fell to 16 games back, and are eliminated from winning the East. The Tigers' and Mariners also lost, so the O's, Royals and Twins are still the wild card teams, while the Tigers are 3 games behind the Twins, and the M's and Sox are one game behind Detroit. The Yankees magic number for a playoff spot is now 5, because if the tie the Tigers for the Last Wild Card, the Yanks get in by virtue of beating Detroit 4-2 in the season's series, and the magic number for the divisional title is down to 14.

In other East games today: the Orioles start a 3-game series against a pretty hot Tigers team at 6:40 pm. The Tigers come in having won 3 in a row, 12 of 17, and 19 of 27 Zac Eflin (10-8, 3.65 ERA) starts for the O's; he threw a clunker against Tampa last time; his first poor start in 5 since being traded. Brant Hurter is scheduled to start for the Tigers after being used a a bulk inning "follower" his last two games; he's pitched well in his last 3 games, winning all 3.
At 7:07 pm at Rogers Centre, the Cards visit the Rays for a 3-game set. Eric Fedde (8-9, 3.39 ERA) starts for St. Louis. Kevin Gausman (12-11, 4.09 ERA) starts for Toronto. Jays cannot catch the Yankees so no details necessary.
The Rays and the Guardians play the 2nd game of their series at 7:10 pm at Progressive Field. Zack Littell (6-9, 3.89 ERA) starts for Tampa; he threw 5 shutout innings against Baltimore for a win last time. Tanner Bibee (11-6, 3.57 ERA) throws for Cleveland; he's thrown 2 solid starts after 2 klunkers
And at 7:07 pm, it's Houck vs. Schmidt at the Stadium. See you in about 15 minutes.

Red Sox have replaced Houck as their starter tonight with Richard Fitts, the righty who is one of the two pitchers they traded to the Sox for Alex Verdugo.
No time to do any real scouting report on Fitts. He pitched a decent game in his 1st start, 2 runs, 0 earned in 5 2/3 innings, but it was against the White Sox.
FB 94-5 about 47%, slider 84 about 50%, and Splitter 89 about 3%
