He did play OF in Japan, and Ruth didn't pitch once he got to the Yanks. Not that Ruth couldn't. In 1933 the 38 year old Babe pitched one game for the Yankees. A complete game win over the Red Sox !I think it was the last game of the season and Babe just wanted to remind them of who he was. Was 5-0 pitching for the Yankees…

I'm sure Ruth would have continued to pitch if there was a DH option in his day, but he had to play the OF too. Baseball was very different back in the days of Ruth. We all get a kick out of comparing players from then and now but I don't take it too seriously. I respect Ohtani as a great athlete and he is certainly a better ballplayer than most DHs. I do think that comparing a DH to a full time player ignores the stress that goes with the 150 games a season MVP candidates log.

Besides when he’s pitching, he’s played 8 innings in the field in his career. His CAREER! … He is doing things no one else has done, but he’s no Babe, and he’s no Judge either… I imagine if Ohtani wasn't a pitcher, he would make a great RF, just like Judge. What is the reason given for Ohtani not playing defense? Is it to preserve his pitching arm for next year or do the Dodgers think he would be a liability in the field? Only 8 innings in his entire career in the field raises some questions.

He had surgery last year, which why he couldn't pitch this year and he they certainly weren't going to have make throws from the outfield either.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk This is definitely well deserved, but I would not have been surprised to see Ohtani get it.
