From MLB Rumors 11/18/24
Yankees Sign Pablo Reyes To Minor League Deal By Nick Deeds | November 18, 2024 at 9:17pm CDT
The Yankees have signed veteran utility man Pablo Reyes to a minor league deal, per a report from Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News. The infielder will presumably receive an invite to big league Spring Training in a few months.
Reyes, 31, made his big league debut with the Pirates back in 2018. That 18-game cup of coffee in the majors went quite well for him, as he slashed an impressive .293/.349/.483 in 63 trips to the plate down the stretch that September. That strong performance earned him a larger role with the club as part of the club’s Opening Day roster, but he struggled badly and found himself optioned to the minors for much of the summer as he ultimately slashed just .203/.274/.322 in 71 games. A PED suspension wiped out Reyes’s 2020 season, but he resurfaced as a member of the Brewers in 2021. He spent 2 years as a depth piece for Milwaukee, shuttling between Triple-A and the club’s bench and hit a middling .258/.330/.344 (84 wRC+) in 103 trips to the plate with the club.
He elected free agency following the 2022 season and initially signed on with the Athletics on a minor league pact for the 2023 season. He ultimately did not make it to Oakland, however, failing to crack the club’s Opening Day roster before being shipped to the Red Sox in mid-May. He was quickly selected to the big league roster in Boston, and his time with the Red Sox proved to be the most productive of his big league career. Reyes appeared in 64 games for the Red Sox last year, slashing a roughly league average .287/.339/.377 in 185 trips to the plate.
That was a sufficiently strong performance that Boston decided to bring Reyes back for the 2024 campaign, but things took a turn for the worse this year as he posted a paltry 27 wRC+ in the first month of the year before being designated for assignment by the Red Sox in late April. Reyes was outrighted to the minors initially but quickly found himself on the move again as he was dealt to the Mets the following month. Reyes only made one appearance in Queens as a pinch runner without stepping up to the plate, but he did slash a strong .300/.385/.504 in 68 Triple-A games between his 2 clubs’ affiliates in Worcester and Syracuse.
Now, Reyes will enter 2025 looking to crack a Yankees bench mix that current figures to feature Oswaldo Cabrera, Oswald Peraza, DJ LeMahieu, Jon Berti, and Jorbit Vivas. While Reyes offers little in the way of offense, he does provide value in the form of quality baserunning and the positional flexibility to play everywhere on the diamond except behind the plate. Should Reyes find himself on the outside looking in of the club’s Opening Day roster next year, he could be a valuable source of non-roster depth for a club that currently projects to feature a bench without many optionable players.

From MLB Rumors 111/20/24
Yankees add INF Caleb Durbin and Catcher/INF/OF Jesus Rodriguez to MLB 40-man Roster
The Yankees announced that they have selected infielder Caleb Durbin and catcher/infielder/outfielder Jesus Rodriguez to their 40-man roster, protecting both players from being selected in the Rule 5 draft. Additionally, the Yankees announced that right-hander Carson Coleman has been returned to them by the Rangers. Coleman had been selected in last year’s Rule 5 draft but he spent all of 2024 on the injured list.
Durbin, 25 in February, was drafted by Atlanta Braves but came to the Yankees in the December 2022 trade that sent Reliever Lucas Luetge the other way. Since then, he has taken 697 plate appearances across multiple levels, drawing walks at an 11.3% rate while only striking out 8.3% of the time. He has slashed .287/.391/.440 for a wRC+ of 127 while stealing 67 bases in 79 tries. He has done so while playing the three infield positions to the left of first base while also spending a bit of time in the outfield.
Last week, manager Aaron Boone spoke glowingly of Durbin, saying he expected him to play a big role on next year’s team. With Gleyber Torres becoming a free agent, the club has a vacancy at 2nd base. Perhaps Jazz Chisholm Jr. could move over there but he could also stay at the hot corner. Time will tell if Durbin can carve out a regular role or perhaps be in a utility gig or be in the minors as depth. Either way, given that he has opened some eyes, it’s not surprising that he’s getting a roster spot today.
Rodriguez, 22, is likely further from contributing to the big league club. He hasn’t yet reached Triple-A and only has 23 games at the Double-A level. Still, it’s understandable that the Yankees wanted to protect him, given his strong offensive numbers. In 1,168 minor league plate appearances, he has struck out just 14.3% of the time and walked at a strong 11.6% clip. His combined batting line of .311/.397/.477 leads to a 143 wRC+.
He will likely still need some more time in the minors, but he should eventually factor in at the big league level. He has spent some time behind the plate but also in left field and the 3 non-shortstop infield positions.
As for Coleman, the Rangers took him in the 2023 MLB Rule 5 player draft even though he had undergone Tommy John surgery a few months earlier. The Rangers put him on the 60-day injured list early in the year but were likely hoping to activate him at some point. Unfortunately, he was never able to come off the injured list during the 2024 AL campaign.
They could have kept him on the roster but the Rule 5 restrictions would have carried over into next year. He also would require a 40-man roster spot throughout the winter, as there is no injured list again until spring training. Instead, the Rangers decided to move on and sent him back to the Yankees, who do not need to add him to their 40-man roster today.

www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/11/dbacks-trade-rumors-alek-thomas-jake-mccarthy.htmlJake McCarthy could be an interesting target. He's got experience at all 3 OF spots. If Soto is gone you could put him in CF with Judge back to RF (or maybe put him in LF with Dominguez in his natural CF spot). That would improve defense and hopefully preserve Judge a bit more. That's a huge loss in power though so it might be hard to replace Soto with slap-hitting McCarthy and then also replace Torres with someone like Durbin who, even if he's good, doesn't project to be more than a slap hitter. I actually really like the idea of pursuing McCarthy even with a Soto return. Dominguez-Judge-Soto is dreadful outfield defense (and still is if you switch Judge/Dominguez in LF/CF too). Having McCarthy even just to sub in late in games would be a welcome addition. That's even assuming Dominguez lives up to his prospect billing and is better than McCarthy to earn a starting spot to begin with. And we all know Stanton injuries are inevitable. No one can possible think he'll start more than 110 games. That right there is 52 games a year where you can put McCarthy in the OF and DH Soto or Judge. Maybe explore the idea of Judge playing some 1B as well, if not this year then down the line to free up some extra OF spots too.

McCarthy would be a good choice, if the Yankees can balance out the loss of power by signing either Alonso or Santander to play 1B. Trading for McCarthy might also allow the Yankees to sign Burnes along with one of the aforementioned power hitters. McCarthy would be another player that doesn't strikeout much and has a good OBP.
The question is...What player or players would Arizona want from the Yankees?

The Yankees appear no longer in a position of surplus or strength in their minor leagues after their trades last season. Anyone truly appealing is being counted on to contribute at the major league level very soon to save on luxury taxes.
