Lifetime post season ERA’s
CC..........4.31 Tanaka...1.50 Paxton.....n/a Happ......5.48 Severino. 6.26
CC has had his big moments, Happ was looking much better until the outing last season, Severino was famously bombed in his first post season start and should get many chances to prove himself. The news is not great, nor awful...
Paxton hasn’t had the pleasure yet, and Tanaka has risen to the occasion...

I wonder if Harper could come back onto the Yankees radar? Or even if he’s been there the whole time? As with Machado, I don’t think we should invest in him, but I have no control of that...so all I can do is wonder...
I also wonder how credible the story is that both players have indicated a preference for New York...
Lastly, I wonder if a high AAV contract could lure either player into signing for 4-5 years (regardless of the team)? I see these 8+ year contracts as a quagmire for the teams...it’s such a crap shoot whether the player value holds that long...

Wanted to start a new thread but I guess this one will do. Nobody talking about the breaking news rumor that it's looking likely that the Yankees will sign Machado. Will be announced shortly after the New Years.

Will be announced shortly after the New Years. I guess there’s not any real “breaking news” until a signing is announced, Hawaii. So the only thing we have is a “breaking rumor”... Where do these rumors come from? I’d say they come from the fingertips of a sportswriter desperate to come up with something to fill a newspaper column on a day when nothing is happening...Sort of like my post that I posted before yours, it’s strictly speculating due to boredom... (: Frankly, I’d rather we pass on him...and Harper, too. There are other ways to get the job done. It may be that all we need to do is sign a cheap alternative and wait for Didi to return and Andujar to improve in the field...In some ways, I think I’d rather finish in third place then to sign either of these two boneheads...

I guess I'm in the same boat as you. Would rather go for elite pitching when we can. It now seems those opportunities are few and far between. In my youth I used to think you can pass on some as there is always another one around the corner. The past 10 years has taught me this ain't true. Makes me wish we went all out for Scherzer or Sale because those guys are rare. Young studs on the free agent market. Who cares about the cap. Take care of that later on by signing fewer big name hitters. Would rather have a lineup of Scherzer, Sale, Tanaka, Severino, and Paxton than Machado, Stanton, and Judge. Not sure who the next big name pitcher will be though. Everytime I look through the future free agent pitching pool the past few years, I wasn't that impressed.

Those top-flight arms don’t come around often. When they do they also struggle to remain healthy. So when a team has them they like to try to lock them up before they get away. Yep, occasionally a Scherzer or Sale slips through the cracks, and should be strongly considered if available.
It’s hard to find enough of them around to be able accumulate three or more. Then you have to hope they can stay healthy. Have you ever seen a team keep an entire five man rotation together for more than two or three years? It does’t happen all that often.
Ideally, my team on the field would be made up of elite glovemen that can hit in the higher percentile of all elite glovemen, especially up the middle, but preferably all of them. Just like OBP back in the moneyball days, I believe fielding is now an undervalued asset that gets ignored. In addition, top quality fielders are usually good athletes. Most but not all can run pretty well and has a hustling mindset. You’ll certainly get some that can steal some bases and take extra bases on hits, and certainly some will hit with more than average power. They all need to hit enough to “keep the line moving”, and contact would be a plus.
Among the guys we have today that best suit those terms would be Torres (still learning but can be a top defender), Gregorius, Gardner (not sure what’s left in the tank), Hicks, Judge, and potentially Sanchez. Andujar has fielding deficiencies. That can be tolerated in a first or second year player, but at some point he needs to improve or something must be done...I think Stanton is decent in the field as well, but I’d pull up well short of calling him elite.
So our OF is fairly well represented. We need help at the infield corners, a substitute for Didi (glove first!), and maturation from Sanchez...

And in today's daily article you wish you hadn't read:
Trevor Bauer gets in bizarre Twitter feud with young woman
Come on Trevor Bauer. Arguing with a random college girl over twitter? Not a good look man. Get back to flying those drones.

Bauer is no more or less odd than I suspected. The drum beats. He hears it. We can’t. He dances and we don’t understand why...He throws baseballs for a living and he does it pretty well. Maybe he’ll do that for a while and then retire to a quiet life someday. Maybe he’ll snap...He’s an odd one, that Trevor Bauer...an excitable boy they all said...He’d make a great Warren Zevon song. Ah-Whoooo!!!

Health is always a key, but Severino, Happ, Tanaka, Paxton and Sabathia is a very good rotation, one of the best in the league. I'd have to agree, Chi...Given the fragility of CC's knee and the track records of Tanaka and Paxton, it would be highly unexpected if we don't have need for a sixth starter at some point in the season. The team may make another move, or wind up retaining Gray as a swing man... If not, even a short-term injury will allow some lucky kid a shot at a few starts here and there... CC is gone after this year and just had a stint done. Tanaka and Paxton have significant health issues. Severino has attention disorder syndrome and might run off to join a circus any day...
