It’s interesting that the market conditions are letting the smaller market teams into play, yet they’re not showing much desire to participate... Revenue sharing should be abolished. These teams have no incentive to try to win. Yep, a lot of the cash is going right into the owner's pockets.

They are not given an incentive to succeed and therefore they dont. Sure a young team might catch lightning in a bottle every once in a while but on balance revenue sharing policy has the opposite of the intended effect. Not only would smaller market teams be forced (or at least more forced) to try to provide a compelling product as a way to make a profit but it be cheaper for fans of big market teams because they wouldnt need to charge as high of prices on everything to hit their desired numbers (since they know a big chunk of what they make won't be diverted away to the laggards).

Eight teams in ten years since his five-year stint in NY. He still hits pretty well, but his fat little post-PED body doesn’t have the speed it once did. He only got to play about half the time last year, but he’s only one year away from back to back years with 86 and 85 RBI. Where did the time go, mother? Our little boy will be 34 this year...And he’s still playing Pirate... ARRR...He hasn’t stood in CF since 2014, and that was an emergency situation for the Jays... Cheating turned out pretty profitable for Melky. I wonder if he owes Alex Rodriguez any residuals for connecting him with Biogenesis.

www.msn.com/en-us/sports/mlb/report-giants-odds-on-favorites-to-land-harper/ar-BBTsEVF
www.msn.com/en-us/sports/mlb/jeff-samardzija-were-going-to-have-to-get-arbitration-moved-up-a-year-earlier-and-get-guys-to-free-agency-earlier/ar-BBTsRV8 A handful of veteran players have spoken up this offseason, both directly and indirectly, about the state of free agency in recent years. We’ve heard from Peter Moylan (link), Collin McHugh (link), Justin Verlander (link), Dallas Keuchel (link), Jake Arrieta (link), Evan Longoria (link), and Buster Posey (link). You can add Giants starter Jeff Samardzija to the list.
Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area spoke with Samardzija at Oracle Park on Friday morning about the state of free agency. Samardzija said, “We’re going to have to get arbitration moved up a year earlier and get guys to free agency earlier.
It seems like there might only be one way to get that, but we’ll see. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that because we want to keep the fans happy. We want people coming to the stadium and watching a great product, but they need the best product available, and having 50 guys sitting at home that are big league players is not the best product.”
Samardzija continued, “You know, striking is the last thing you want to do, but you have to be willing to do it. But I think there are other things before then that can get the ball going the right way.”
The crux of the issue is that baseball players are severely underpaid for the first three years of their careers, then underpaid for the most part over the next three years before reaching free agency.
Because all 30 teams are involved to some degree with analytics, they know that a player’s best years are typically behind him, or they may only have one or two more predictably good seasons by the time he reaches free agency (with a few exceptions).
As a result, players who thought they would finally be making money commensurate with the value they have provided are no longer finding those contracts. Hence why spring training has just begun and the likes of Keuchel, Craig Kimbrel, Adam Jones, and Marwin Gonzalez have not yet been signed.
Allowing players to reach arbitration eligibility a year sooner — and, ostensibly, free agency a year sooner — is a step in the right direction. It would not be a panacea. The competitive balance tax gives owners an excuse to implement roster austerity. The incentives for a team to fully commit to rebuilding (e.g. better draft picks) outweigh the drawbacks. The spoiling of free agency has caused young players to sign long-term contract extensions just for the financial security.

Giants swooping in to land Harper would be an interesting development. I wouldnt be shocked and if its not the Yankees I wouldnt mind them being the ones to get him. MLB wont like having their two most marketable stars on the West coast though.

MLB wont like having their two most marketable stars on the West coast though. I’m happy with the team “as is”, but if we’re getting one of the “two”, I’d rather it be Harper than Machado. That lefty bat would mean a lot in this line up, especially with Didi out. I would hope Harper would become the DH about 60% of the time...

That lefty bat would mean a lot in this line up, especially with Didi out. I would hope Harper would become the DH about 60% of the time... Agreed on Harper over Machado. I am thinking a bit more long term. We have to consider that Gardy is basically a 4th OF and on a one year deal, Hicks becomes a FA after 2019, Stanton can opt out after 2020. The Yankees have a 24 year old 3B who just hit .300 with 75 XBH as a rookie, a SS who keeps getting better and is quite possibly the heart of this team - he needs to be extended, and a 22 year old 2B who can play the other IF positions if anything should change. Slotting a LH power hitter between Judge and Stanton would be invaluable (every big bat aside from Didi is RH). Harper remains a big picture no brainer. Machado never made much sense unless Andujar was going to net a #2 starter or better.
