They knew he wasn’t taking that deal... That story doesn’t make sense. That’s a pretty big gamble to take just for show. I don’t know of anyone in business (who hasn’t already failed) that takes risks like that. The narrative that they ran Cano out of town because he didn’t hustle is revisionist history. That’s just not what happened. They wanted him back at a price, offered him a big contract and got outbid and stayed financially disciplined. I think one of the big sticking points with Cano was the length of the contract Seattle offered, ten years. When you consider Cano is already in decline, I think the Yanks made a good decision, I just wished they didn't turn and give all that money to Ellsbury.

I don't believe Harper and Machado will both sign with the Phillies either. How can teams, like the Yankees survive when teams like the Phillies are signing all the big free agents? Machado and the Yankees seems destined....Manny could be one of the greatest third basemen in NY history. But he IS a punk and that will figure into things. I don't think it will deter the Yankees. I'm not a big fan of the move, in any case. I like the idea of signing Harper and Moustakas, instead, 'cuz LH power in Yankee Stadium is my jam. Put Harper at 1B, move Andujar to LF, and the Yankees turn into a better team, more balanced and with solid 3B defense. And, yes, I'm assuming Andujar can play left and that his howitzer of an arm will be an even better tool there than it is at 3B. Add Corbin to the mix, maybe ship Frazier and others off for yet another good starter, maybe re-sign Happ, and.....blah blah. But if the Yankees DO sign Manny, they'd need, IMHO, to trade Andujar and get solid LH bats for LF and 1B. I agree with you about the left handed power at the Stadium. The Yankees have almost become too right handed. Part of that problem was Bird's poor season and when you throw in Didi's injury and Gardner's decline, you can see a need for more left handed pop in the lineup, something that's probably been noticed by Scott Boras as starts to market Harper.

Only one bit of concern. Zobrist is coming off his career high in BA at age 37...I know he's just for a temp job and plays everywhere...But at 36 he hit .232...

The Yankees' failed in the postseason mainly due to starting pitching performance, which most certainly shall be the primary focus of their offseason spending. I believe the Yankees have learned their lesson on headcases, unless it is a buy relatively low scenario (Chapman) for an obvious upgrade. Taking on a headcase for 300 million plus on a long term deal...doesn't seem to fit their recent philosophy, especially with a cautionary tale in the building (Ellsbury, though he never rang the douche bell like Harper/Machado). Signing Gardy seems to indicate either an outfield trade (Hicks) or a no go for Harper in left - probably the latter. Would Harper play first for the price? Unquestionably. But, with defensive concerns at short due to Didi's surgery, at third with Andujar, Torres still learning/adapting at second, and an absolute hole at catcher, would the Yankees incorporate a neophyte at first? Catcher and first handle more plays than any other position on the field. Now, Machado is gold glove caliber at third....but not at shortstop. And, he certainly didn't distinguish himself in the postseason, as a player or a person. And, at 300 or 350 million? Only for Mike Trout, in my opinion. Kick the tires on everyone, but let Machado and Harper sign in Philly.

How amazing would it be if Philly signed them both, plus some pitching, and still flopped as a team???

Anyone know anything about Hanser Alberto? The Yankees just claimed him off waivers from Texas.

I wouldn't argue that our starting pitching cost us mightily during the playoffs. I would also add though that we had only one player(Judge) hit over .250. Andujar, McCutcheon, Sanchez and Gardner hit .200 or below, although Gardner had a very small sample size. I wouldn't sign Machado or Harper although I would like an everyday left fielder other than Stanton, McCutcheon or Gardner. As good a season as we had I still think Boston is better all around and I don't see them backing up anytime soon.
