Just read this on riveraveblues.com "Update: Rosenthal walked his report back. Now he’s saying the two sides are close to a deal but it has not yet been agreed to. This morning we heard the Phillies were “bringing it” in their pursuit of Happ. Maybe that spurred the Yankees into action. Anyway, stay tuned." Those Phillies are going to be interesting to watch. Money, yes! Brains? I dunno about that. Three years and 50 M for ‘Cutch, a player who demonstrated a strong desire to succeed last season, but also showed that his legs are about shot, and his bat is slow. He should have been a 10M-12M per year guy on two years at this point...He may be riding pine as soon as this summer...

The Yankees passed on Corbin because of one more year, and they passed on Eovaldi because of one more year. Now they may sign Happ to three years. Both Corbin and Eovaldi would be younger at the end of those contracts than Happ is right now...but, I'd rather Happ than Pickles.

Figure this means the Yankees starting pitching depth is now...Severino, Tanaka, Paxton, Happ, CC, Gray (technically as of today), Loaisiga, German, Adams, Michael King maybe, and Acevedo may start at AAA so depends on if he develops/wows. Pretty good depth-wise without even making any other moves. Won't Montgomery be back sometime next year as well? I doubt it. I believe he had the TJS surgery in mid-June and recovery is generally 12-18 months. So technically its possible but I wouldnt consider him someone to be relied upon, especially because the guys are usually a bit shaky out of the gate upon return.

Good news if true. Proven commodity and someone we know can do the job in the AL East in terms that won’t become an albatross. Worst case is they have a year or so where he isnt very good or they release him. Limited downside.

It seems we were the first ones to give in. I thought I saw a tweet that said several teams are willing to give Happ a 2 year deal but he wants 3. He'll be 39 at the end of that deal. Hopefully because we gave him the extra year he gets less money per year than if we offered a 2 year deal. Is that how these things work? Not really happy giving him that extra year. Wished we stood pat with 2 like all the other teams.

Wished we stood pat with 2 like all the other teams. A minor point, to be sure, but Happ won’t turn 39 until October 19, 2022, so he’ll be in what would be classified as his age 38 season. I believe Philly might have decided to clinch the deal with Happ by adding the third year to provide the impetus for the Yanks to concede. I admit I’m reaching, but there was an article last night that said Philly was going to go after Happ, and were going in hard... Anyway, the third year was what Happ had stated would clinch the deal, and he had been quoted as saying he would take the first realistic three year offer made to him. Good bargaining on his part. I’m not real pleased about that third year either, but I’d rather have that than not have Happ in 2019-2020. He’s had his best consistent years and health since 2013...

A team just cannot have too much pitching. And Happ is a proven commodity. His age suggests imminent decline, but he could be a freak. He's a really big human and has been among the games' most durable starters over the past 5-6 years. FanGraphs shows him with an average fastball slightly better in 2018 than 2017. That so many teams have been in on him this winter tells me he's held in high regard, despite age concerns. But I can't believe Cashman's search for another dominating starter has ended. And I can't believe Cashman would really trust in the health of his rotation--all of whom, besides Severino and, ironically, Happ--have had some physical problems. I haven't seen anything about Kikuchi. Is he an option? Deals for Syndergaard or Kluber may just be pipedreams. Adding another "iffy" FA starter, like Gonzales or Holland or Lynn, wouldn't be very encouraging.

I wonder with really good scouting you could find a young pitcher who you think could turn it around. Someone who has sucked but has the potential. Anyone like that around? Of course fans wouldn't really like that signing.

I just read this from a Yankee fan on another site:
"There were only 20 pitchers in the entire AL last year who had. 3.76 ERA or better AND pitched as many as 150 innings. Five of them are now Yankees."
Of course, this presumes that Happ signs.

Of course fans wouldn't really like that signing. Those pitchers are a dime a dozen. The reason they’re so cheap is because they’ve sucked, and are likely to continue to do so. You’re correct sir! I don’t think many Yankee fans would like that. We like to wait until some other organization suffers through the growing pains and turns them around. Hence, the pitching acquisitions we’re making so we needn’t suffer the growing pains of Loaisiga or German. Last year, we did suffer some of those pains, as well as the pains of the continued growth of Severino...

So a rotation with CC, Happ and Tanaka all in their 30s. All about the Benjamins obviously.

I heard Buster Olney on my local sports station a few minutes ago and he said, as of 3 hours ago the Yanks had not offered Happ a third year.
