It’s looking like an industry wide trend. I don’t know if it’s collusion, but even young “Superstars” can’t get long term deals. If I’m the White Sox or possibly the Phillies, I’m all over both of them. Land them both if you are either one of those teams, you are auto contenders. Boston is sure quiet, huh?

If you read the rumors and believe them, Boston is citing high payroll as the reason for letting Kimbrel shop around and for not yet addressing their bullpen needs after losing Kelly. They also didn’t seem to be at all into chasing the two key FAs... Are they simply arrogant enough to believe they can’t be caught?... Or is this simply another indication of collusion?...

I can’t buy the idea that the off-season is over for NY...The number of infielders doesn’t compute. And why sign a full time gold glove second baseman man to work in a utility role?...He doesn’t have the bat to replace Didi, nor to win first or third base...Torres may not have the chops to handle SS, and Tulo may not be able to stay on the field... This is funny farm stuff...Maybe they’ll take a page out of the volleyball rule book and just rotate all the fielders after every pitch...
I don’t hate signing DJ... but I find it a bit perplexing at this point...

I’m with you, Kay, but I’m afraid the team is pretty much set except maybe another reliever. I would have loved to get either Machado or Harper. I think it was unrealistic to hope for both. I think the only way Manny comes over is if Miggy is peddled for another SP. The OF is already crowded especially if you count Clint Frazier, who despite his health issues still has tremendous upside and a gigantic chip on his shoulder. Stanton with his no trade clause isn’t going anywhere, Hicks put up the 17th highest WAR in baseball, Gardner is invaluable in the field and in the clubhouse along with CC and Judge just might be on his way to a HOF career and is the face of the Yankees. So there seems like unless Andujar is the odd, man out the smoke is about to clear on the off season. Its too bad. I would have given Machado or Harper a 10 year 300 million dollar deal. It's not like we couldn't afford it. Oh well. It is what it is. Absolutely they can afford it. Every team in baseball can afford it. The Yankees aren’t the only ones who can afford it but still haven’t concluded that it’s a smart idea to do it.

Highlights of LeMahieu's defense: He’s going to be fun to watch in the field. Not sure what a season of Gleyber and Tulo at SS will look like but it seems like we are about to find out.

We could afford it a lot easier than most teams based on the revenue numbers I have seen. Its not every year that 26 year old superstars become free agents. Missed opportunity.

I don’t know if there is even a 10/$300 million deal on the table. I kind of doubt it. The most I’ve heard is something like 7-8/ $240-270 million range. I have no idea what Hal is dangling. We’ve heard 5/$200-220 range mostly. Obviously, no sane person is going to leave that much money on the table to play in NY with its high taxes and cost of living just to be a Yankee. No doubt DJ can pick em, but with so many ifs on the Yankees squad this season- Sanchez, Bird, CC, Gardner ( that one I disagree with), Miggy’s defense, Tanaka, Paxton injuries, Frazier, Severino’s effectiveness, Happ’s age and continuing effectiveness, Didi’s ability to come back this season.... admittedly, like we like to say here in Singapore- first world problems. Still, a lot of ifs for a team that hasn’t even won a division title since 2012 or a WS since 2009, which coincidentally aligned with the signing of Tex and CC. If the new goal of the legendary Yankees I’d just to compete, then job well done. If the object is to win a WS by assembling the best team possible, it falls short. I’m a die hard fan like everyone else here and of course will roll with whatever the product is and will attend my customary 2 games a season when I’m stateside. I have to say, last year at this time I was hyper excited. This time around, not so much.

I don’t hate signing DJ... but I find it a bit perplexing at this point... I have no concerns with Torres at short. His defensive issues have more to do with mental lapses- not unusual for a young player- they eventually figure it out. Keep in mind that Torres can also play 3B. I can easily see a configuration where the Yanks play DJ at 2B, Tulo at SS and Torres at 3B- with Stanton in LF and Andujar at DH. That is probably their best defensive team- which might help their SP. I also think we will see Torres floating throughout the INF depending on who needs a rest that day. Tulo probably needs a day off a week- maybe 2. DJ can play 3B and 1B- but hasn't done it in over 4 years. Torres might be the better mobile option- even though he will start every day. When Tulo sits, I can see Andujar sliding back to 3B, Stanton back to DH and Gardner getting OF days. It is better to have some flexibility- that way when the inevitable injury hits, you can adjust.

Personally, I don’t think either of these guys are worth what they’re looking for. They’re not generational talents like Trout is. For sure they’d improve the team right now, and then there’s the other 9 years of the contract. Personally, if you want the team to be competitive for a sustained period of time, I think you’d want the front office to be careful with these big deals that become albatrosses more than they don’t. We have one with Stanton already that seems like a decent investment. We’ll have to make decisions. Before long about Didi, Hicks and Judge. Just being realistic. If Mike Trout were available, to me that would be a totally different story because he’s considerably better at baseball than Manny Machado or Bryce Harper. For someone like that, I’d be more willing to outspend the league. I suspect Hal and Cashman see it similarly.

GF— You say either Machado and Harper can improve the club only “right now”, yet they are both 26. I’m assuming then, that you expect both of them to tank fairly soon. At what age do you expect their skills to dissipate, thus making a 7-8 year deal for either to be dead money? Stanton is 29 and more a DH player, but you have no problem with paying him more than either of the former who are three years younger. Curious. Again, the Yankees revenue in comparison to payroll is about the lowest in baseball. Unless you’re related to Hal, I don’t get why you would be opposed to adding a player who would make the Yankees odds on favourites to win the division. Do you feel that being a contender is enough and that the fact the team hasn’t even won a division since 2012 is secondary to being fiscally “responsible “ ? It’s all good if that’s your feeling, just trying to get a sense of where you are coming from. I know lots of people think that way over here who are Yankee fans and feel that winning a championship is a crap shoot and being a contender makes more sense than going all out because sooner or later your number will hit as long as you keep running quality teams out there year after year. BTW, Trout is a year older so at what age do you predict he will decline since you think Machado and Harper are bad long term bets even if they are younger?

Just the way markets work. Everyone thought the mega contracts were going to keep getting bigger and longer. Teams came to the realization that these types of commitments usually leave them in a bad spot and thus the trend is reversing (the alternative for players being holding out for a contract offer thats never coming).

I wouldn’t give anyone 10 years either unless he was 21-23 and was putting up mid career Babe Ruth numbers, but 6-8 years for a 26 year old player would prompt me to split the difference and pay more annually for 7 years. Maybe Hal was thinking something like that, or maybe he was at the 5-6 year range and less money. Too bad either way. Tulo and LeM together aren’t near as good as one Machado.

Alright so 10 years 300 million is too much. I was being too exorbitant. At least thrown them a 7, 8 year deal.
