This signing is beginning to sound eerily like Steven Drew a couple of years ago.

Some of the same expectations. Good glove, best position at second, but possibilities at third base. Some pop. Lipstick on a pig stuff. Admittedly, DJ has more upside for sure, but he was signed to fill about the same role. Utility infielder with a shot to win a position.

This signing is beginning to sound eerily like Steven Drew a couple of years ago. Was anyone even mildly enthused with that signing? In this case, at least there is a root reason for DJ's signing, which is Didi's injury. There is also a trunk to that tree, which is the lack of desire to commit to Machado long term to solve a short term issue... Here are some reasons that I didn't see Machado as a fit that go beyond, but include his personality: Has long been a vocal member that often incites on field fighting by chiding his opponents. (childish, over-emotional) His insistence on playing SS last season. It was hinted at first that the Orioles might be better able to retain him if they let him do that, but as the season wore on it became more and more apparent he would leave. (selfish, deceptive) His high level of play in 2018 was viewed as a "salary drive". It was indeed one of his two best statistical seasons at the plate, and easily his best up until he was traded. (selfish, greedy, not team oriented) The odd non-hustling moments in the World Series, not to mention the odd vocal response. (entitled, lazy, low social intellect) The odd stepping on of feet, tripping, etc in the World Series. I still haven't figured those out. Was he joshing with friends on the other team? Inattentive? Actually attempting to ruin a play (and simple enough to think he could hide that from the cameras? I'll leave the personality faults or credits to your imagination, I have no idea). He went from a .259/ .310/.473 in Baltimore in 2017 to .315/.387/.575 in Baltimore in 2018 before the trade. After the trade he slipped back a bit in LA to .273/.338/.487. I guess I'm a bit confused as to how good he is offensively. Prior to 2017 he put together a couple of nice solid seasons that were similar to the numbers he put up in LA last season...I guess my concern is that perhaps he's one of those players that can be as good as he wants to be. Once the novelty of his new long-term deal wears off, is he going to work hard to maintain his obvious skills, or will he let them erode?... signed, Sigmund Inger
