The thin SP rotation sliced thinner at least for the moment.

Supposedly, pitch counts reduce arm troubles. There does not appear to be any actual evidence for this. Of course, pitchers have been susceptible to arm miseries since Candy Cummings figured out how to throw a curve ball. But you would be hard-pressed to prove that the advent of the pitch count has resulted in fewer pitchers getting injured.
Maybe if they reduce the magic number to 50.

Hence the adage, you can never have too much pitching. Push the envelope the other direction at ones own peril.

Hence the adage, you can never have too much pitching. Push the envelope the other direction at ones own peril. Charles, ye been preaching this to the congregation for the whole of the off-season. In fact, a couple o times I myself have thrown in a yea verily here and there. Even thought about maybe slipping an extra dollar into the plate a time or to before I came to my senses. Yet brothers Cashman and his team didn’t do it and here we sit at the the first crossroads of need. Methinks brother Cashman will wait a couple weeks and wait to see how Severino feels then before making any moves, unless he was already inclined to do so. It’s never easy to pin him down on his inclinations so all we can do is wait. If you want to skip him an extra dollar on the plate, go ahead. I would, but I’m afraid he might put it In Steinbrenner’s pockets...That’s how he keepeth his job... Gotta go now. Got a steaming bowl of Quaker Oats waiting...

I think pitchers pitch harder and at weird angles than in the past. Pitch counts probably help, but not enough.

Maybe German and Loaisgia can piggy back in the major leagues? I think either could but I expect them now to sign a veteran so they can avoid rushing Severino back and derisk things. My money is on González since Boras will try to play hardball for Keuchel who would come with impact other than salary alone.

From the Athletic: "To what must be the relief of the Yankees organization, Severino didn’t throw another pitch after feeling the discomfort in his shoulder after throwing a slider. He alerted the staff, then walked off the mound, beginning the process of recovery without an attempt to pitch through it." So that's at least a reason to be a little hopeful. If he hadn't signed that extension, you wonder if he tries to push through and something really bad happens (assuming something really bad hasn't already happened).

There have been guys who have had deltoid “discomfort “, who never pitched again in that season (I think I read Davies, of the Brewers), or were ineffective and others that were only slightly derailed. Who knows.. Just chirping🐥

There have been guys who have had deltoid “discomfort “, who never pitched again in that season (I think I read Davies, of the Brewers), or were ineffective and others that were only slightly derailed. Who knows.. Just chirping🐥 Another just chirping here -- yeah, I was reading about Zach Davies, and how he was supposed to be shut down for two weeks, which became a month, which became a couple of months, after which he returned but was ineffective. I know, every case is different, so I won't peg too much on that. From what I am reading, a best case scenario would have Severino returning in late April or early May, seeing as how he can't just pick up where he left off in two weeks and would essentially re-start his spring training clock. Since so much of the Yanks early schedule is against garbage teams -- 16 of the first 21 are against the Orioles, Tigers, White Sox and Royals (plus three with Houston and two with Boston), that should help minimize the damage out of the gate. Even guys like Loisaiga and Cessa and German (or Gio if we get him) should have a fighting chance in that scenario. Realistically, the majority of your starters are going to spend some time on the DL during the course of the season -- it happened last year as well -- this year will begin with Severino, CC and Montgomery unavailable -- maybe just get it out of the way early. Wishful thinking, I'm sure. You would probably be safe betting that both Tanaka and Paxton will also do a DL stint, you just need to spread them out. The Dodgers were clobbered by injuries to their starters last year and still made it through in good shape.
