So would you be interested in signing Dallas Keuchel after the draft Monday? For what kind of contract? Or would it be better to wait for a trade for Trevor Bauer or Marcus Stroman? Maybe you think we have enough pitching with Severino and Montgomery coming back later?

Maybe you think we have enough pitching with Severino and Montgomery coming back later? I think Keuchel makes the most sense assuming that when they scouted him at his tryout he had normal velocity. On Wednesday he will cost only money. They are short starting pitchers, CC isn’t a good bet to last the season and German has turned back into a pumpkin. We don’t know when Severino and Montgomery will return and in what condition.

You can never have enough starting pitching. And I'd rather spend money than trade away assets. I can't wait to see Keuchel without his beard! Make it happen Cash!

If the Yankees like Keuchel, I'd be all over him, especially on a one year deal. I think he can sign tonight, after midnight.

"Right at midnight, as Sunday turns to Monday, an unintended, secondary phase of free agency will commence in baseball. Some seven months after the free agent market opened, left-handed starter Dallas Keuchel and closer Craig Kimbrel will be free to sign with any team — finally — without that team losing a compensatory draft pick as a result."

Cool. I know it was tied to the draft, I suppose they pegged it there because the draft order needs to be set. I would go ahead and lock him up either on a one year deal, even if it was at a higher salary than they’d be able to get him for multiple years. Or a lower salary on a 3 year deal would be ok with me as well. With CC leaving they do need a horse that can give them innings.

I think we're all on the same wavelength on this one and for the same reasons. We've already gotten more out of German than we had any reason to expect, so even if his regression continues, we're ahead of the game.
For sure, anytime CC pitches I feel like it could be his last outing. These four and five inning starts are not sustainable if we hope to have a functional bullpen by September. The Yankees are by no means the only team that does this, but the obsession with continually lowering the bar on pitch counts for starters obviously will have consequences for the relievers.
Anyway, not much downside to signing Keuchel and hoping for the best. As for the beard business -- it would actually be a less radical change than Johnny Damon, who not only had the gold prospector beard but an unkempt flowing mane as well. As far as I know, he never went back to that look after he left the Yankees. I think the Geico caveman commercials made him change course.

I think they need him. Not sure the Yankees will pay for him

Good point, noetsi. We can’t just assume the Yankees will outbid everyone. The one thing we do have on our side is that we have a great record. As players age, they look to win a championship to remember, or add one more.
I wonder how badly the bridge has been burned with Houston? It would seem that would also be a desirable location for him, if he and Houston’s management can both put some of the ugly business of past negotiations behind them.
If we can sign Keuchel, yes. I would do so. But that would not stop me for looking at other teams and other opportunities to trade for some solid talent. Bauer would be on my list, but with the caution that he is an odd bird that somehow needs to be accepted by the team. There will be other fish in the sea. Some of them younger, and without as much baggage... I still have my eyes on a few guys I was touting last winter, and some of them are going to be on teams that will be selling.
With Washington disappointing, I’d surely want to check in on that pitching staff, and maybe even be greedy enough to wonder what we’d do with Anthony Rendon if we picked him off...

MadBum is also available and the Yankees might like him more. He'd cost prospects, but Estrada, Frazier, and others are expendable.

The teeth are growing long. The same with Greinke. For a big splash, I’d rather chase Strasburg. To work a deal with the Diamondbacks, I might be more tempted to go after the AJ Burnett-like talents of Robbie Ray. I’d surely like to check in on Matthew Boyd in Detroit, and Lukas Giolotto <sp?> in Chicago. If we want to go the veteran route and look for depth, Danny Duffy is an unexciting option that could be a fit. I know he’s not having a good season, but I still like Lopez in Chicago, too. But I like him more as a project to stash in AAA and see if we can find the key to finishing him as a pitcher. Great “stuff” guy...

But his velo is up, he's just 29, he's been pitching pretty well, and stepping back into a winning environment could provide a spark. i like Boyd, too. But the cost would be significantly higher.
