I consider it a virtual tossup between Lazzeri and Gordon, and finally cast the vote for Joe because the more I thought about his play at 2B, the better he seemed....I had never heard Lazzeri described as slow afoot, but Gordon certainly was not....however the vote comes out among those two, it will not be unmerited... Being slow afoot needn’t mean that greatness is unachievable. It’s more like one of the final parts of the decision if the skills are very close. Surely it’s more desirable that a player is capable of scoring runs, and speed along with good base running instincts has huge value. While Pete Rose (when young) was not a big time speedster, he ran faster than average, but he tried to outrun his talent level and made many outs on the bases. He was credited with hustle and passion by many, but I saw him as having poor base running instincts and a bit of greed that tempted him into making mistakes. The baseball magazines used to publish so many pictures of Rose sliding headfirst with his Moe Howard (er Dutch Boy) hair flying in the breeze, dust stirred up. Many of those photos were outs... Why am I talking about Rose here. Darned if I know. I justvabhor him... The point is I suppose that there are many pieces that make good or bad players...Running is one of them.

Still Gordon three, Lazzeri two. My vote and the statements from some others said they had a hard time choosing. I’d be good with calling this one a draw if the rest of you are...two really great players there. Plus Cano and Randolph being very good as well...

For me, slight edge to Gordon over Randolph. I didn’t see Gordon play of course but have to trust the scouting and analytics that say he was an amazing defensive 2B. Willie was very good also. S an extremely strong offensive player as well.
I’m not sure what to do with Cano. We don’t know if he cheated as a Yankee and he didn’t finish his career here. Adjusted for era he was a very strong hitter. I was a big fan of his when he was with the team and felt like his defense was underrated and the hustle issues were overblown. Still, I give the other guys an edge over him.
