Football before Labor Day seems too early for me but they don't care what I think.
We have Florida vs Miami.
Two teams that rarely play against each other getting it on in Orlando.

Any thoughts on the season?
Can anyone other than Bama or Clemson win the title?

Chi, I guess until there is evidence to the contrary, it's tough to go outside that Alabama-Clemson box. Usual suspects like Georgia and Ohio State and Oklahoma.
Oklahoma could be interesting with the transfer of Jalen Hurts from Bama. A legitimate chance to have three straight Sooner QB Heismans. Texas looks like the only serious roadblock for them on that schedule.
It will also be interesting to see how Ohio State reacts to the departure of Urban Meyer.
Harbaugh will have to go into hiding if he loses to Ohio State again.
Unless you are a fan of either school, the Alabama-Clemson show is getting old.

Let’s see, run Pythagorean Expectation formula with reduction of random variables coherent to a 100 year history, then run regression model... I get. I don’t know...ask Russ.
I was actually surprised to learn that Russ follows collegiate football the other day. I’m not sure why it surprised me, but it did. Even as a teenager I almost always worked jobs that required weekend hours, or at the least weekend flexibility. Even to this day, I’ll work the weekend if need be.
I suppose that, along with the fact that I never attended college, kept me from developing a rooting interest in the collegiate game. I will be driving behind Mt. Princeton tomorrow though in the Collegiate Peaks area south of Buena Vista, CO tomorrow. I’m trying to recall which other college will be represented by the mountain to our south. Is it Mt. Columbia?
Anyway... that’s all I know about the college version of the sport. So, I just hope your team wins! Good luck!...

Even as a kid, I preferred college football to the NFL version. That wouldn't be unusual in the South, but I was in the burbs of Philly.

I think my FSU will be ok. A long way from greatness, but a lot better than last year.

I miss the conference alignments I grew up with. Of the three big (at that time) Florida schools, Miami and Florida State were independent, with Florida in the SEC.
The Big 10 had ten teams, the Big 8 had eight teams, the PAC 8 (and then 10 and then 12) followed suit, and the Southwest Conference still existed (I miss that.)
The ACC extended from Maryland in the north to Georgia Tech in the south, and the Eastern schools like Penn State and Pitt and Syracuse and West Virginia were independents, as were scattered others like Notre Dame, Miami, Florida State, Houston,Tulane, the three service academies and some others.
The original WAC was fun, normally dominated by BYU.

I grew up in central PA as a huge Penn State football fan, as were most football fans from the area. An advantage of living in the Chicago area is that we are in the heart of Big Ten country and I can occasionally attend a Penn St. road game, my son & I are going to the PSU/Michigan St game this year.

The Cornhuskers of Nebraska are going to be a force once more, much improved this year, and nationally competitive within 3 years, I believe....I would not trade our head coach and his staff for any in the country....they will compete well for the Big 10 West this year, and may win the right to play for the Big 10 title....
Twenty years ago, the football facilities in Lincoln were among the very best...now there is a rather urgent need to upgrade those facilities in order to recruit, and provide the very best in training and nutrition to the young men who commit to the program....Warren Buffet is chair of an ad hoc committee that is pushing the project forward...estimates on costs range between 125 and 160 million, but even then, there are projects more elaborate and costly either being done by other universities or being considered by them....the state of Nebraska is rather football crazy, having sold out every home game since 1962, and anything less than being among the best is not acceptable...for those who may fault that culture, football makes a huge amount for the University, and funds many other lesser activities, and brings in huge revenue to Lincoln and the state...

I find that college football tends to be very popular when it lives in states without much professional sports representation, too. I never saw any fans that were rabid for any sports like Kentuckians were for the Wildcats basketball and the Kentucky Derby. The Reds and Bengals were only a bit more than an hour’s drive up the freeway from Lexington, but that was out of the question for most of the locals...

I think its unfortunate that athletics is more valued than academics in the US at times. Buildings on campus may be falling down, go to the Bellamy Building at FSU sometimes, but they have state of the art athletic facilities. Football is important in Florida, academics is not.

Football is important in Florida, academics is not. sure....I understand that position, and it is a valid one...yet you have said that you hand out water and food somewhere instead, and are not involved with your alma mater.....contact them, they will be grateful to hear from you....can you fund a full or partial academic scholarship for a deserving student?...or, there are hundreds of other ways to help?...….
