I got this idea off a twitter post. Remember when I was a Yankee?
Bartolo Colon, The Big Sexy
Kevin Youkilis. This one is just wrong
Ichiro Suzuki (Maize remembers )
Vernon Wells
Feel free to add your own unlikely Yankee! (with or without pic)

Fun topic, Kaybli. Guys who made their bones elsewhere but passed through the Bronx on their way out the door.
Richie Sexson, Kenny Lofton, Brian Roberts, Xavier Nady, Travis Lee come to mind.

Thanks Kaybli. Main thing I remember about Travis Lee is that he was a phenomenal defensive first baseman. Good to see those guys again!
I look forward to other peoples entries.

Lee only logged 20 plate appearances for us! Amazing your remember him at all! Then again he was competing with John Olerud and Tony Clark for at bats!
Those are two good guys for the thread too!
John Olerud
Tony Clark

I remember Lee from that 2004 team that kept losing first basemen. Giambi went down in mid-season with that benign tumor, and the Yanks were patching with Lee and Andy Philips and God knows who else in between Olerud and Clark. Olerud played quite well for them, but I remember he got hurt in game three of the ALCS against Boston and the Yanks had to use Clark starting in game four and as we all know never won another game. Now there is no excuse for blowing a 3-0 lead, but I remember thinking even at the time that Olerud's absence did diminish the Yanks chances. I'm not counting the likes of Wilson Betemit or Morgan Ensburg or Kelly Johnson for this exercise because they never made much of an impression anywhere they played. Of course we had another castoff dud first baseman in Doug Mentkiewicz for awhile too. Penintentiary Face Gabe White. Even the renowned sabremetrician CJ Nitkowski.

We certainly had our share of journeyman first basemen for a while before we got Mark Teixeira. Don't forget Josh Phelps, Craig Wilson, and Juan Miranda!

Oh man, Craig Wilson I totally forgot. He had some decent years with Pittsburgh if memory serves. Juan Miranda had also been scrubbed from my memory banks. I looked him up and saw to my surprise that he played, albeit very sparingly, in three different seasons for the Yankees.
Aaron Guiel was another short-lived first base experiment.

I meant to add that Tino Martinez had his Act Two as Yankee first baseman in the years before we got Tex.

Andrew McCutchen should be good for this. Enos Slaughter always seems like a model for this sort of discussion. Yanks used to love to stack those greats on their roster on their way out the door. Jose Canseco. Darryl Strawberry, Dave Kingman.
Yankee? I hardly knew he!...
